Update (6:20 p.m. ET): Romo has a fractured rib. So naturally, he's back in the game. That's what happens when Kitna bookends a score with a pair of picks and the Cowboys find themselves staring 0-2 in the face.

There are five words that Cowboys fans fear more than anything else in the world: "Jon Kitna is under center."

That's what's happening for Dallas right in San Francisco, though, as Tony Romo has left the game against the 49ers with an injury to his ribs. As our Cowboys Rapid Report Nick Eatman notes, Romo "stayed in the locker room after halftime getting evaluation on the rib injury" and then "returned to the locker room for another look at his rib injury at the start of the third quarter."

Regardless, though, it's not good -- Romo is hurt, Dez Bryant is already out, the Cowboys secondary is limited and they can't establish a running game.

On the bright side, though Kitna threw an interception early in the second half, he rallied to tie the game at 14 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

And there's always the "good news" that the Cowboys are playing the 49ers. A more talented team might not afford Dallas the luxury of staying in the game with Kitna taking snaps.
