Mangold has high ankle sprain, to miss 2-3 weeks?

The Jets rolled over hapless Jacksonville on Sunday 32-3, but everything wasn't cream cheese for Rex Ryan's crew -- center Nick Mangold injured his right ankle during the first quarter and didn't return to the game.

The injury, caused by Jags linebacker Daryl Smith landing on Mangold's leg, has been diagnosed as a high ankle sprain and could sideline Mangold for up to two to three weeks, according to a report from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Mehta's source tells him Mangold is "definitely out" for Week 3's matchup against the Raiders and that "it could be awhile" before the All-Pro center gets back on the field.

Mangold is renowned for being tough but despite a notoriously high pain threshold (no, really, just search "Mangold" on Twitter) it seems unlikely that the Jets would rush him back.

"You lose a great pro like that for any amount of time, it hurts," one Jets player told CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman.

This is correct -- Mangold keys that offensive line and and now undrafted rookie free agent Colin Baxter will need to step in and fill some very big shoes. Mangold, by the way, hasn't missed a game since he was drafted in 2006.

Given how sloppy the Jets offense looked on Sunday, this isn't the greatest time to be missing the center, either -- the Jets hit the road for the next three weeks to face off against Oakland, the Ravens and the Patriots.

Mangold has high ankle sprain, to miss 2-3 weeks?

I'm hearing it's about an 8 week injury, maybe more.  It would be amazing if he comes back in 3-4.

Nick is a great player at center, but we once had a man named Kevin Mahwea who everyone figured couldnt be replaced! To win super bowls you have to face challenges, build character, as a Jets Fan for over @0 years it always seems we are the only doughters,Lets start beleaveing hunter will be the best replacement for the team till Nick gets healthy and build on it!!

Mangold is tough but it's not as simple as just shooting him up and getting him out there. First off he needs his ankle to plant and pass block, the base is key for OC position. Also the Jets have Mangold under contract long term and don't want to wear him out. the smart move is to let him get his 3-4 weeks or more and then have him ready for the stretch run. I am not a pro athlete or anything close but my high ankle sprain took 7 weeks.  those guys with their hyperbaric chambers and growth hormone can heal very fast but high ankle sprains can linger.

With or without Mangold at center 3 road games including Ravens and Patriots is pretty tough...At best 2 wins at worst none. I will be ok with one win, 2 would make me happy. Mangold is such a good center it is impossible to replace him with a rookie or even with a guy who was sideline for most of his career. Let's hope Sanchez will manage to throw the ball quicker. We can wait 2, 3 weeks for Mangold but more then that would be a real disaster.

Have been wondering if O'Hara's name would come up - kind of surprised that he has not hooked up with another team already -  even if he has lost a half a step, he would be a better option than what the Jets have now.

Injuries are part of the deal. It looked a lot worse when it happened, 2 or 3 weeks are a blessing if that's all it turns into. Meanwhile I thought the rookie started looking a lot better as the game moved along. 2-0 at home where they have struggled over the years, this is a good tough road team. I think they go into Oakland next week and make it 3-0
