On Sunday, Packers safety Nick Collins suffered a scary neck injury that forced him to be carted off from Bank of America Stadium. He spent the evening in a Charlotte hospital, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed on Monday that his season was over.

"We're not far enough along in the evaluation process" to determine if surgery is necessary or if it may be career-threatening, McCarthy said, per our Packers Rapid Reporter James Carlton.

Given the dangerous nature of the injury, it's just fantastic that Collins is OK. And McCarthy indicated that Collins appeared to be doing well after informing the team of his injury.

"He has a neck brace on and he's walking around," he said. "You would never know (he's injured)."

As far as football implications go, this is a pretty huge loss for the Packers, especially given that the talent-filled secondary is currently the subject of some scrutiny, given that they've allowed two-straight 400-yard passing games.

Charlie Peprah is the "next man up" once again, as he filled in for Morgan Burnett last year. The difference, of course, is that when he replaced Burnett in 2010, Peprah had lining up next to him.

All the best to Nick Collins, those neck injuries are some of the scariest.

I still cannot figure out how that hit caused such a serious injury.  When watching the replay during the game, it looked like a light hit to a more padded section of the body - it was basically Stewarts upper thigh, lower ass - and we see so much more violent contact on almost every play.  Really made me appreciate the level of risk these guys are taking - even less violent contact can have incredibly serious consequences.

Hope he can return sooner rather than later, or at the very least, that there are no long-term consequences for Collins.

Hate to see a player get hurt especially with a neck injury. Good news for the Falcons though since he was a pain in our A$$ last year. Get well soon

Amen, papjon.

I hope this doesn't have the kind of long-lasting implications so other retired players must deal with. If this ends Nick Collins' career, let it be because the risk of making a bad situation owrse is too great, rather than lingering or impending infirmity.

For the Packers, this is a much bigger blow than losing Bigby or Burnett. Charlie Peprah played well enough to cover those losses, but Collins was leaps and bounds better than those two. Burnett may someday be in Collins' league, but not yet. Something tells me Green Bay now is dying to get Tramon Williams back on the field, and Charles Woodson is about to play more safety than he ever has.

smixy, I hope you are right, but remember last year the core of the secondary remained intact (Williams, Woodson, Collins). Collins will be missed for sure, now you have Peprah and Burnett in there. Looks like it will be up to the front 7 to bring some more pressure as the secondary adjusts.

Not as bad a loss as if Rodgers or Matthews went down, but still will hurt. Just hope Collins gets well, whether or not that includes football. And if it is career-ending, thanks Nick for all you did, you will be missed.
