Orton and Tebow

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

It seems like every week after a Broncos loss, coach John Fox has to explain that Kyle Orton is still his starting quarterback and that he’s not tapping Tim Tebow on the shoulder to come and save the day (unless, that is, he’s desperate for a wide receiver).

Even after fans chanted for Tebow during Week 1 and even after fans talked about buying a pro-Tebow billboard, Fox has been resolute in saying that Orton is his No. 1 guy.

He had to reiterate that today by giving Orton -- who has completed 57.3 percent of his passes for 672 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions on the season -- a vote of confidence.

"Not one guy's got us where we are,” Fox said (via Rapid Reporter Lee Rasizer), pointing to his team’s 1-2 start. “I know that's popular belief. There's a lot of people in our building that understand quarterback play and right now Kyle, in our opinion, gives us our best chance."

Also, this: "At the end of the day it’s on all of us. It’s not on the quarterback.”

But it’s not only about whether Tebow can start as the team’s quarterback. It’s about whether he can get on the field at all in non-emergency scenarios. Fox also was questioned about why Tebow was not part of a red-zone package that failed Sunday vs. the Titans.

“We had two touchdowns in the same situation. We just needed three," Fox said. "It's all a consideration. ... We just didn't choose him.”

Which for a guy who is seen by so many fans as the Chosen One has to be a little strange.

You like stats here are some stats for ya:

Within 10:00 mark of the 4th quarter Orton has a QB rating of 46.2!  Awesome, right?!

Here is the breakdown of the 11 possesions that Orton has lead in the last minutes of the game:

Completions-attempts: 22-of-46
Yards: 267
Completion percentage: 47.8
Yards per attempt: 5.80
Touchdowns: 1
Rushes-yards: 3 for 12
Yards per carry: 4.0
Sacks-yards lost: 5 for 27
Interceptions: 3
Fumbles lost: 1

Oh did you see the 1 touchdown!  That is good, right?  Oh, but wait Orton benefited from a pass interference call to bring the ball to the one yard line!  ORTON IS CLUTCH!!!!!!   Yes, I do believe that TEBOW is better than this!  The coaching staff knows that Orton cannot be relied upon in the redzone that is why they call running plays all of the time!  Time to move on from Orton.  Tebow or Brady would be an upgrade.  Please bench him now!!

Tebow? Orton? Who cares? Seriously! Denver needs a REAL QB.

Denver should either release, trade, or play Tebow.  He will be a constant distraction(not his fault), but Denver took him in round 1. He's played well in limited duty, and he has a huge following.  No win situation for Denver coaches.

As an outsider (KC Chiefs fan), I believe it is only a matter of time before Orton is out and someone else is in.  Tebow?  Not sure because I am not sold on the fact that they like Tebow at all in any respect.  It is hard to admit a mistake and they do believe they made one, but what would really kill the Broncos is if Tebow left and played somewhere else and performed.  Somewhere in their mind, the Broncos believe Tebow will succeed and they know it will not be with them.  So, I see Quinn next and then the other kid.  Finally as they suck a little more, Tebow plays and plays well, but once again, there will be some belief that they could draft Luck.  My advice: play Tebow and make the offense more towards him.  Tebow may not be liked by all, but this kid is a winner and knows how to win and he will win on this level. Hard to admit you just do not believe it will be with yourself
