Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

After the Giants thoroughly dismantled the Eagles Sunday, a bruised (but not broken!) and battered Michael Vick spoke with the media. Philly's quarterback had been forced from the game for the second straight week, this time with a right-hand injury. He wasted little time getting to the point.

"At some point something catastrophic is going to happen," he said. "Not to blame the refs or say that it was their fault, it's just one of those unfortunate situations and I just think more precautions should be taken when I'm inside the pocket. If you look at all the replays, I'm on the ground every time and it's unfortunate for myself and it's unfortunate for my team and I'll be lying if I said I wasn't, if I were to sit here and say I wasn't frustrated right now because of that."

A day later, Vick softened his stance. "I was kind of out of character and being too candid in that aspect. Ultimately, I have respect for the referees and their decision to make calls. You won't hear me complaining about it no more."

The NFL hasn't commented publicly on Vick's observations which we take to mean that the issue is behind us. Except that former NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira, who now works as a FOX NFL analyst, has some thoughts on the matter.

Appearing on SiriusXM Radio's Evan and Phillips in the Morning (transcription via PFT), Pereira needed only six words to get to the heart of the matter.

“Well, I thought it was ridiculous,” he said.

There's more, of course.

“It actually took me back, it took me back to my job in New York when I worked for the league, and it was a constant complaint by the Eagles, whether it was [Donovan] McNabb at quarterback or whether it was Vick. They clearly complained more than any other team.”

And more still.

“He’s a quarterback that’s on the move, he’s going to get hit more,” Pereira said. “Yes, there are a couple that may be missed but the fact that a ton of them are missed and that he’s hit late all the time is absurd. And he comes out and kind of does the mea culpa yesterday but at the same time what did he say? ‘I was being too candid.’ Well, that doesn’t sound to me like much of an apology. And also the damage is done. I don’t want to be the referee that goes in there now next and works with him. If he calls a roughing the passer penalty for a hit on Vick everybody’s going to say, ‘Well, Vick taunted him into that.’ If he doesn’t [call it] there’s going to be more criticism. So I think it was a bunch of bull and it didn’t sit well with me and it still doesn’t.”

Vick M.A.S.H. update
On one hand, we understand Vick's frustration. The guy takes an absolute beating. On the other hand, it is ridiculous to suggest that he's alone. Ben Roethlisberger is a perfect example. Not only is he mobile in the pocket, but he's also a huge target. If anybody had a legit complaint about not getting calls, it's Big Ben. (Remember when Haloti Ngata broke Roethlisberger's nose by clubbing him in the face last season? No flag, though Ngata was later fined.)

Jay Cutler and Tony Romo also take weakly drubbings, and Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan have been known to get rocked a time or 10 a game, too.

The difference between Vick and the five other quarterbacks we listed? Vick's the only one bellyaching publicly. And let's be honest: it's not like he's playing behind the Texans' offensive line. The five guys responsible for protecting Vick are, to put it kindly, a mess. Maybe Philly's QB should first direct his comments at offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg since he's responsible for dialing up the plays that inevitably lead to Vick getting peeled off the turf.

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

ashville steve, you're as big a damn idiot as Prick, er Vick, is.  Here is hoping the next game this pathetic P.O.S. plays he takes one, legal or illegal I don't care, and ends the tool's season.  THEN maybe we won't have to hear the crybaby bitch like a little girl.

Uh oh.  Here come the bears fans out of the woodwork.  Didn't take long for that to happen.  It's not the terrible offensive line they have.  It's not the crybaby quarterback who overthrows his receivers on half the plays.  It's not the stubborn vagabond coordinator they have who has sunken his teams playoff hopes in week 3.  Nope.  It's the refs.

And Vick thinks he is getting unjustly battered?  Think of how he tortured those dogs!  If I was Commissioner no way he would have stepped on another NFL field.  He crimes were so agregious that all I think of him is as a dispicable human being.  Oh, some of you may think I am too hard on the poor guy.  If I was convicted of what he did, which would never happen, I would never get my job back.  I would be lucky if the city of philadelphia hired me as a garbage collector.  I cringe every time someone puts this guy on a pedestal.  He is not someone anyone should admire.  He is a horrendous calling card for the NFL to market around.  And I do think the majority of people think the way I do.  People who deserve second chances at a job most of us would die for, don't disrespect life, the way this man did.

Running or standing in the pocket, Vick is getting hit after he releases the ball. That's a penalty according to the rules. Call the damn penalties. That's all he's asking.

And why dont you enlighten me where this photo sequence is mr. itsearly. Very defensive post and anger in it as well towards the matter. I have dvr and have rewinded and played a hundred times, and still can't see what the refs have seen. I've gone in slow motion, I've paused, I've done it all and no where was a hold to be found. The only way it was a hold was right at the line of scrimmage but I don't see a flag being thrown 5 seconds later where Graham was all by himself due to a play at the line of scrimmage. And I never said anything about how it would have changed the game or anything. But you want more of my opinion, the bears may have played worst, that definately was not one of our best games again, but the packers did not look good at all either, nor have they all year, the bears just played worst. The pack barely escapes the Saints, almost gets beat by Cam Newton, and almost let the bears back into the game late in the game. Your defense sucks, and is now worst with Collins done for the year. Rodgers isn't going to throw 4 td's every week, and the way the pack look right now they are not going to win another super bowl this year. But your dillusional and arrogant about them, you as well have a merry christmas 2 months early.

Common Censure you would be throwing a fit to if it happend to your team. Love how you had to mention the packers a whole bunch in your post. Typical Green Bay fan nothing but cheese stuck up in their a**. I hope the pack gets screwed over on a terrible call soon so I can come find you on here being hypocritical. No way you have never complained about a refs call that either cancelled out a great play or a game.

... Bull Malarky, Vick leads the league is roughing calls this year AND LAST year even though he started barely half the games.  Vick gets more roughing calls than any QB in the league.  The 3 you mention are actually at the bottom of the list on roughing calls, rarely do they get the calls.
