Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

After the Giants thoroughly dismantled the Eagles Sunday, a bruised (but not broken!) and battered Michael Vick spoke with the media. Philly's quarterback had been forced from the game for the second straight week, this time with a right-hand injury. He wasted little time getting to the point.

"At some point something catastrophic is going to happen," he said. "Not to blame the refs or say that it was their fault, it's just one of those unfortunate situations and I just think more precautions should be taken when I'm inside the pocket. If you look at all the replays, I'm on the ground every time and it's unfortunate for myself and it's unfortunate for my team and I'll be lying if I said I wasn't, if I were to sit here and say I wasn't frustrated right now because of that."

A day later, Vick softened his stance. "I was kind of out of character and being too candid in that aspect. Ultimately, I have respect for the referees and their decision to make calls. You won't hear me complaining about it no more."

The NFL hasn't commented publicly on Vick's observations which we take to mean that the issue is behind us. Except that former NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira, who now works as a FOX NFL analyst, has some thoughts on the matter.

Appearing on SiriusXM Radio's Evan and Phillips in the Morning (transcription via PFT), Pereira needed only six words to get to the heart of the matter.

“Well, I thought it was ridiculous,” he said.

There's more, of course.

“It actually took me back, it took me back to my job in New York when I worked for the league, and it was a constant complaint by the Eagles, whether it was [Donovan] McNabb at quarterback or whether it was Vick. They clearly complained more than any other team.”

And more still.

“He’s a quarterback that’s on the move, he’s going to get hit more,” Pereira said. “Yes, there are a couple that may be missed but the fact that a ton of them are missed and that he’s hit late all the time is absurd. And he comes out and kind of does the mea culpa yesterday but at the same time what did he say? ‘I was being too candid.’ Well, that doesn’t sound to me like much of an apology. And also the damage is done. I don’t want to be the referee that goes in there now next and works with him. If he calls a roughing the passer penalty for a hit on Vick everybody’s going to say, ‘Well, Vick taunted him into that.’ If he doesn’t [call it] there’s going to be more criticism. So I think it was a bunch of bull and it didn’t sit well with me and it still doesn’t.”

Vick M.A.S.H. update
On one hand, we understand Vick's frustration. The guy takes an absolute beating. On the other hand, it is ridiculous to suggest that he's alone. Ben Roethlisberger is a perfect example. Not only is he mobile in the pocket, but he's also a huge target. If anybody had a legit complaint about not getting calls, it's Big Ben. (Remember when Haloti Ngata broke Roethlisberger's nose by clubbing him in the face last season? No flag, though Ngata was later fined.)

Jay Cutler and Tony Romo also take weakly drubbings, and Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan have been known to get rocked a time or 10 a game, too.

The difference between Vick and the five other quarterbacks we listed? Vick's the only one bellyaching publicly. And let's be honest: it's not like he's playing behind the Texans' offensive line. The five guys responsible for protecting Vick are, to put it kindly, a mess. Maybe Philly's QB should first direct his comments at offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg since he's responsible for dialing up the plays that inevitably lead to Vick getting peeled off the turf.

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

Actually, there is a photo sequence on the hold committed by number 21 circulating around the web. If you are going to post your opinion - at least do some homework on the subject matter first. The Packers pounded the Bears fair and square. and they'll do it again in December - Merry F'n Chistmas.

Yes the refs do suck, but they have always sucked and that goes the same for Vick. The guys is very athiletic, but he has been and always will be a failure as an NFL Quarterback. Thats because he can't play the part consistantly just like the Refs are very inconsistant. At least the Refs aren't crying like little bitches. And also the refs aren't getting the $100 million dollar contracts. Not like Vick who is a very overpaid Third string quarterback at best.

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

I'm 100% with Mike Pereira on this subject. The only people Vick has to blame is his bad offensive line. The refs mis some calls, of coarse. But in last weeks game against the Giants there was not one late or questionable hit on vick whatsoever. Remember Vick just said after the rams game when asked if he was worried about all the hits he is taking Vick said "I'm not worried at all, I'm used to taking those kind of hits, remember I used to be a running back in high school its no big deal'. Now 3 weeks later hes crying like a girl on her menstral cycle complaining about cramps. When you look at the numbers vick takes much longer in the pocket then any other quarterback. In the NFL a QB only has about 3 seconds in the pocket,,,,,maybe then needs to get the ball out right away or he gets hit. So of coarse he takes hits. And just because he has a 100 milion dollar contract doesn't mean he gets hit less, it just means he gets paid more to get punished, then crys like a 2 year old girl who just lost her Barbie doll.

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

Thats exactly the point. Vick, and I'm sure alot of people in the league, know that Brady, Manning and Brees are really the only QBs in the league who get those roughing the passer calls as often as they should. The way Vick may see it, he's right up there with those guys. He's calling the league out on pampering those three, but cutting the list at Vick and Rodgers and others leaving another 29 QBs to get rattled in the pocket. He's not saying he's treated differently from others

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

'Pappa' is either a Bears fan who is still sore from the last three beatings the Packers have put on them, a Vikqueens fan who is still sore about blowing the first three games with 10 point leads, or a Philly fan who is still sore from the two beatings the Packers gave the whiny Iggles last year on the way to the title.  Whichever it is, the poor baby needs to watch more film to find the truth and stop complaining about the refs which is what losers do when they are too stubborn to realize the fault is their own.

How about that holding call on the bears punt return. Where was the hold? Nobody was even around Graham and they still throw the flag at him. That is why I hate NFL officials, they seem to just throw flags to throw them anymore. I find them to be the worst officials in sports honestly, even worst than the NBA. The whole bears packers game was poorly officiated from the beginning for both teams. Far to inconsistent.

Pereira calls Vick's comments on refs ridiculous

Hey Mike, have you EVER seen a call that was wrong? It not only happens to Vick, but to Rodgers, Rivers and a few others. But never to Brady and Manning and Brees. When the Packers lost to the Cardinals in the playoffs 2 years ago, the last play of the game, A.Rodgers was being pulled down by the facemask. Afterward Mikey said that it wouldn't have mattered.
Lets just face it, little Mikey is there to make sure that everybody knows the officials ALWAYS make the right call. Even when the replay shows otherwise.

I for one am tired of the officiating. The refs enabled the Lions to tie the game last week on a "horse collar" tackle in which Greenway clearly grabbed him from the front. I side with Mike Vick on this one. The refs aren't consistent, and they are biased. Count how many holding penalties you see Green Bay commit this week, and then count the ones that are actually called.
