UPDATE (5:50 p.m. ET): We reached out to ESPN for comment and we were informed they are pulling the Hank Williams, Jr., intro from Monday Night Football's telecast for Monday's game between the Buccaneers and the Colts.

“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz told CBSSports.com.  "We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast."

-----
The latest sports-related figure to invoke Godwin's Law -- the act of comparing someone in modern culture to legendary very bad person Adolph Hitler -- picked a pretty bad subject for comparison, as Hank Williams, Jr., voice of Monday Night Football on ESPN, decided to hop on Fox and Friends and compare Barack Obama to the German dictator.

But, no, really, this happened. Williams decided to point out that it was foolish of House Majority Leader John Boehner to play golf with Barack Obama.

"Come on, come on, that would be like Hitler playing golf with [Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu," he said. "In the shape this country is in?"

Wait! Don't pick your jaw up off the floor just yet. He wasn't done.

Hosts Brian Kilmeade and Gretchen Carlson were stunned (and later apologized for the remarks), but Kilmeade managed to point out that he doesn't "really understand that analogy." So Williams clarified it.

"I'm glad you don't brother, because a lot of people do," Williams said. "They're the enemy... Obama! And Biden! Are you kidding? The Three Stooges."

No, Williams did not list a third stooge, but maybe he was just referring to himself?

It was a gaffe of pretty epic proportions and unfortunately for Hank -- and ESPN -- they managed to shift the conversation directly to his 20th year with the WWL as the guy who screams the theme song at the beginning of the show.

"A one-year deal that keeps on going sure is fun," Williams said of his tenure with MNF.

Of course, that only works if it actually keeps on going.

Maybe the big Libs who wear suits at ESPN will replace Hank with the Dixie Chicks...I'm sure they would be liberal enough for them. Afterall, liberals can get away with just about anything in today's media.

Playing golf with people they do not agree with IS AMERICAN!  Like Don Imus and many other loose lipped celebrities these quips in interviews, absent the fairness doctrine (which would serve us almost as well as the glass-steagal act returning) are quips they need to be held accountable for.  I think its everyone's right to believe anything they want groundless or not but an employee who cashes a weekly check is behaviorally bound and clearly this outburst violates a code of conduct for ESPN.  I think everyone who hates liberals and vice versa should play lots of golf with the objects of their disaffection and maybe in the end we'd undo much of the damage polarization has caused.

Nice defense.  He was only "comparing" their relationship; between a man who's responsible for killing millions of Jews versus the PM of the Jewish state.  Which one is Obama?  Our leaders should really hate each other that much?  How is that better?  No sense talking to the tea baggers.  There is no group more effen stupid politically in this country.  And they never take responsibility for their mistakes.  Hence the blame on Obama for everything as if the last guy was great.  Idiots.  I don't expect tea baggers to understand anything I said unfortunately.

I don't see where he is calling Boehner or Obama Hitler? You must look really deep to find a story here. What a JOKE.

He is the worst president of our lifetime. Nice to see that you, like Barry want to blame everything on others. You are just what Saul Alinsky said about what socialism needs to succeed: "useful ignorant idiots".

First off....you're an idiot.  How can you call Obama the worst President of all time?  Wow, you are ignorant.  He has complete regard for the American people but the difference is....he cares about ALL the Amercian people....not just the rich like you do.  You are obviously a Republican and all you care is yourself.  Me, Me, Me.  How much am I paying in taxes?  Oh, i can't believe the Obama choices helps someone else and possibly the poor or middle class.  You are a selfish bastard who is only worried about yourself...don't dare say he is bad President becuase you are selfish and stupid.

Let's also not forget the GIANT FREAKN' hole W left us in.  You want to talk about the worst Presidnt of all time....there you go.

To paraphrase the preemiment authority on musicians and the First Amendment, Dubya:  Exercising your First Amendment rights may have consequences.

Not sure why if HankIII was talking about opposition groups--and not referring to Obama as Hitler--he didn't say Abbas and Netanyahu instead of Hitler and Netanyahu?  Since such a defense requires a purely literal reading of his words, Netanyahu's political enemy should be alive at the same time.

What else would you expect from this type of mindset?  His ignorance goes to eleven.  Unfortunately, his talent hasn't hit three in about 30 years.  Go buy some more rodeo clown gear, Hank, and stop drafting off your dad's talent.
