Roman Harper cheap shots Steve Smith in end zone

A cheap shot by Roman Harper in the first quarter of the Panthers game distracted a bit from an absolutely amazing play between Cam Newton and Steve Smith -- Newton evaded rushers in the pocket, started to take of running, froze right at the line of scrimmage and launched a pass to Smith. Smith elevated, nabbed the ball and took off to the end zone for a 54-yard touchdown.

As Smith was standing still in the end zone after the score, Harper came flying in and launched at Smith, knocking him the ground. A melee ensued in the end zone between a number of Panthers and Saints, but it was broken up without any real damage.

However, you can all but guarantee that Harper, who probably should have been ejected for such a cheap shot, gets fined by the NFL this week.

Additionally, don't be surprised if several members of each team is fined for their actions in the near-brawl that took place in the end zone -- Smith ended up throwing Malcolm Jenkins to the ground by his facemask and Newton ran up to try and break up the fight.

Most notably, it's continually surprising how the officials are reluctant to throw players out of games for blatant cheapshots.

Ejections = lack of good players = less revenue.

The gray, nearsighted group of elderly gentlemen that call themselves "officials" aren't just intentionally blind, they're intentionally only enforcing policies that result in more $$$.

Definitely a late hit and uncalled for but it wasn't like he blasted him.  It was more like a shove.  It's divisional football and these guys hate each other during the game.  It happens every time.  What I didn't like was the BS call that was made for roughing the quarterback when Newton was knocked to the ground as he threw the ball. That enabled a failed drive to continue and kept them in the game.  Officials need to step it up!  Finally, Newton is an Awesome QB and will be a terror in the NFC South for years to come.

Steve Smith is a thug and he desrved that hit.  He showed his true colors by assaulting Malcolm Jenkins who had nothing to do with the play.
Take off your homer goggles moron. Smith is mouthy but I've never heard anyone describe him a s thug. To my knowledge he hasn't been arrested while in the NFL and interviews I've seen or read paint him in a flattering light and involved in the community.

I did not watch the hit live but on the replay Smith is not 4 yards in the endzone nor standing still. However we was at lest 2-3 yards in the endzone and the play was clearly over. A previous poster mentioned that he thought Harper was trying to knock the ball loose. This is not at all the case as Harper shoved with his hands toward Smith's head not anywhere near the ball. Also after the hit glared while walking away clearly making his statement (ie it was NOT a football play).

I would also like to point out Smith did nothing to precipitate the scrum as he spun the ball and was celebrating. While it is showboating I would consider it a better alternative to going after Harper or causing the scrum. Also prior to his celebration he jogged into the endzone but didnt' highstep or make any gestures that would be considered taunting.

It is true Jenkins had nothing to do with the play but why was he in the endzone to get grabbed by Smith? I can't tell how it started based on the replay but Harper had walked away and Porter was the player burned so it stands to reason there shouldn't have been any Saints in the area unless they were trying to cause trouble.

Late shot, definitely. Deserved a flag. Cheap? In the eye of the beholder, but I wouldn't disagree with anyone who argued it was. Smith was standing still four yards into the end zone when it happened? Only if you're high.

Don't get me wrong. Smith didn't deserve to get popped, and Harper was totally in the wrong, but let's not pretend this was something extraordinary here.

These guys have more restraint than I do, I would have stomped my cleats into Roman Harper's head til he weas a vegetable if he pulled that stunt on me. Security would have needed to taze me to stop me from killing that coward.

I saw the play live, via RedZone, without anything at stake with either team...  And although it was late, it wasn't as atrocious as the author makes it sound-- Steve Smith was not standing still in the endzone... He had let up just before he crossed the end zone, and dude was trying to knock the ball out for a touchback, and try to prevent the TD...  It was too late, as Smith was already over the line... But he certainly wasn't 4 yards into the end zone (one suggestion) or standing still (another) when Harper launched at him...  It was dumb, and should have been a foul, but as a judgement play it wasn't anything bigger than when guys dive into the endzone to try to save a punt from being a touchback... That happens a lot unncecessarily too (ie, too late)... But the intent is purely to do the only thing possible you can do to try to change the outcome of the play.

Players took offense, and it became a minor scuffle...  But objectively, it wasn't that bad.

Steve Smith was at least 4 yards in the end zone when he got hit by Harper. You can't honestly be defending that garbage by Harper.

I'm not sure you actually watched the play yourself.  Smith had all but stopped running after scoring before Harper landed into him.  He knew the touchdown had occurred, yet decided to show his ass nonetheless.

I'm not sure the author actually saw this play.  If Steve Smith hadn't showboated into the endzone, he never would have gotten hit.  Is the defender supposed to have a switch that can sense the goalline vs a foot in the goalline?  No hits should occur after the runner crosses the goalline?  If anyone is fined for that hit, it would be a travesty.
