Carroll: Whitehurst has improved since 2010

C. Whitehurst could start in place of T. Jackson while Jackson is injured (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

We know Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has a strained pectoral muscle, but we don’t know for sure what the ultimate solution is for his injury. It’s certainly possible that Jackson could be out of action for some time as he recovers, especially if he has to undergo surgery.

We also know that backup Charlie Whitehurst has been unimpressive during his pro career. But ask coach Pete Carroll what he knows about Whitehurst, and he’ll tell you that he believes Whitehurst is a better quarterback this season than last year.

“He’s more in control and ready to take over. … That’s an awesome factor for us to have,” Carroll told ESPN 790 in Seattle (via sportsradiointerviews.com). “I think he’s just growing into it with us. I think he came in last year with an incumbent guy and it was a different situation and I challenged the heck out of him. I couldn’t have thrown a better challenge at him. I said, ‘This guy’s coming in to take the job and in a few weeks from now you get to compete again when you can catch up.’ He didn’t want to hear that and just battled. He’s done all of that to position himself to play like a starter when he got his chance.”

Oh, OK. So, when Jackson returns, the two will battle for the starting job, yes? Ahem, no.

“I think the competition is on. We’ve got two good football players. But T-Jack’s done everything we’d asked him to do and he’s our quarterback, he’s our guy in every way,” Carroll said. “I love what he’s doing. I just wish he would’ve got down on that darn little keeper. … But no, he’s our quarterback.”

Carroll: Whitehurst has improved since 2010

For all the Mannings and Matt Ryan's (who really isn't all that much better than his rookie year, sure he has improved but that much?) there are a bunch of Akili Smith's, Cade McNowns, Alex Smith (Jury still out), Vince Young's.

I'd rather give him a year on the bench so he can learn from Hass and not get killed by a sub par offensive line and maybe develop into Tom Brady than run the risk of going the way of Alex Smith for sure.

That's my 2 cents.

Santa, I was with you on the Hawks being dumb for trading Hasselbeck. But come one...true NFL quarterbacks drafted into a scheme that fits their talents don't need to "learn the ropes from a true professional QB." How do you explain the success of guys like Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan and now Cam Newton early in their careers? Franchise QBs are franchise QBs. McNabb "learned the ropes" from Doug Peterson, explain that one! You sound like nothing more than a Carroll hater to me.

Charlie Whithurst is garbage and the blowhawks whiffed on the trade.

It is still baffling why they even let Hasselbeck go.  That move made absolutely no sense and it will haunt them while they look for yet another QB in the offseason.  Instead of drafting a rookie signal caller who could have learned the ropes from a true professional QB the rookie who will inevidibly be coming in will have to learn what he can from two QB's who cannot take the team to the next level, or even the level they were at last year with Hass and then eventually have to learn most of the position on the job.

Horrible decision but yet it is par for the course with Carroll dating back to his NYJ days.  Unwilling to make the decisions that need to be made to make the ball team better for the long term.  Unable to sort out the QB position, gage QB talent and develop it.

Pete always talks a good game, but he never follows through. He SHOULD be playing Charlie regardless of what happens with Jackson.
