Roman Harper fined $15K for shot on Steve Smith

Last Sunday, Roman Harper of the Saints laid what I thought was one of the cheapest shots I've seen in a while on Panthers wide receiver. In a nutshell, Harper tackled a defenseless Smith in the end zone after Smith scored, because he was mad Smith walked into the end zone on a long touchdown.

For his actions, Harper was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Thursday. Which, frankly, seems a little low, especially considering how unapologetic Harper was.

"I just was like, 'You’re not going to walk and showboat in our end zone like that,'" Harper said. "I just lost it, and maybe I shouldn’t have hit him but I did. I’m not going to apologize for what I did."

Does Harper even realize the game was played in Carolina?

Whatever, the result of Harper's hit was Smith trying to figure out exactly what happened, then spinning the ball even harder than he usually does, and then a near fight between a bunch of players in the game. No one was ejected.

Presumably, Harper's being fined for a "late hit," which is actually only a $7,500 minimum for first-time violators. $15,000 is the amount players are fined for the second violation, but it seems more likely that the NFL cranked up the amount of his fine based on the flagrant nature of what he did.

And it still wasn't enough for the absolutely unnecessary cheap shot he got on Smith.

My reply then is where is Steve Smith's fine for dragging malcolm Jenkins by the face mask on the ground.  There was no penalty for that, but it was clearly inappropriate.  Note: Malcolm Jenkins was NOT the one that hit Steve Smith, it was Roman Harper.

Puertoenrico...  are you like the little playground nat that goes around repeating what the other guy already said?  That mistake was already pointed out captain obvious!  It still doesn't belabor the point I was making about Steve Smith not being someone you'd want to mess with. The hit by Roman Harper was chicken chit IMO and he lost his composure... Malcolm Jenkins got into Steve Smith's face and got  the rag doll thrashing...  Now as far as your comment above, you reallly expected equality?  All involved should have been fined but Harper should have been suspended a game to put the emphasis that the instigator gets the lions share of the punishment. Use some commen sense befor you reply in the future ;-)

The fine seems appropriate for the crime, but Harper should have never put himself in this position. I hate showboating as much as anyone, but a player shouldn't let that get to them; what they should do is go back out on the field and let their defensive talents do the talking for them.

BTW, I am not justifying what Roman Harper did in any way.  I also think that his comments afterwords are completely out of place as well.

For those of you wanting a suspension, tell me, what happened when Finnegan and Andre Johnson went at it last year?  There were clear blows thrown to the head by both of them.  Tackling in the endzone is idiotic, but it does not compare to punching a player with his helmet off over and over again.  The NFL set no precedent to suspend last year so why start with a tackle now?  They gave a penalty and a fine.  What more could they really have done?  If Roman Harper got fined $50k, undoubtedly someone would still say that it was not enough.

Look, they made him pay double what a typical first offense would be.  It would seem that the NFL definitely wanted to make an example of Roman Harper's act.  At some point, making an example is going to be going overboard as well.  I doubt Sean Payton is going to put up with Roman Harper doing anything like that again because this will eventually cost the Saints dearly in terms of wins and losses.

My theory is that the referees gave a biased call later in the game because of the sloppy/classless hit by Harper.  The refs gave Turk McBride a roughing the passer penalty for hitting Cam while he was throwing which made the ball fall harmlessly well short of the receiver!  However, this penalty is understandable in light of a dumbass penalty by Roman Harper making it seem like the game could get out of hand with late hits.  No matter how objective refs try to be, they are human like all of us and remember idiotic displays of classless behavior, and subjectively act on those notions.  So message to Roman Harper, if you don't want the refs scrutinizing every little play of the saint's defense, lay off the completely unnecessary tackling in the endzone (out of bounds).

Commonsense, use it.
All I know is Steve Smith is one mean Mother #$%! er!   I would think twice before attempting to get into this man's grill afgter the way he tossed Harper to the ground like a rag doll and then picked him back up by the face mask to emphasis his distane.  Classic! Reminds me of Lyle Alzado back in the day when he was the most intense and intimidateing player in the NFL... RIP Lyle.

He actually wasn't dragging Roman Harper on the ground.  Steve Smith took out his aggression on the other safety, Malcolm Jenkins.

Roman Harper was just mad because of how many times Smitty has ran all over the Saints, just a little frustration that cost him 15K. (Should have been 30K)

Good Smashmouth Football!! It was a late hit but just a lil shove. Smith was taunting as he does, he got a shove thats all no fine needed just the penalty. You people getting out of control just like comissioner! FFS it was not worth a fine the 15 yard penalty sufficed. If it was last play of game then yes, It was still the first quarter and a close game. Penalty was enough.

If you want to begin fines then have repeat personal foul offenders fined. This play was BS for a fine. Grow a sack people.....
Not well put. Roman should have been fined more.

Harper is a flat-out dirty player.  Not only for the hit on Smith.  In Week 2 he drove his helmet directly into Earl Bennett's (Bears) chest.  Bennett has been out since.  Not a Bears fan but that was dirty as well.  This guy needs to be suspended with a quickness.
