Irsay: Wayne, Mathis 'trade rumors not true'

Somewhere, somehow, rumors about Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis getting traded popped up. As Phil Wilson at the Indianapolis Star notes, the rumors aren't really rumors so much as conjecture, based on the fact that they're free agents and there was a mention that the Colts should trade both guys in order to acquire picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.

That's not an unreasonable take, but Colts owner Jim Irsay said Saturday that neither player will be heading anywhere other than Lucas Oil Stadium for their home games this year.

"No,the trade rumors aren't true," Irsay tweeted on Saturday morning. "I'm negotiating 2 buy Mars I can ensure inter-galactic,NFL dominance for the 25th century."

OK. Well at least I know I have something in the bag for Sorting the Sunday Pile, even if it lacks a clear-cut, pop-culture reference.

But back to dealing Wayne and Mathis -- it's not that likely to happen even though it probably should. (And, technically, still could.) Both guys are older than 30 and in the final year of their respective contracts. Wilson believes the Colts should extend both guys after this year; others feel differently.

Indy might not net all that much for the pair (or, more likely, if they're individually wrapped), but it seems reasonable that a contender with issues at wide receiver might be interested in Wayne. The Bills, the Titans, the Ravens, the Texans, the Chargers, the Redskins -- really anyone with a winning record would be upgraded by adding Wayne.

And Mathis could be a pass-rushing terror and/or upgrade for a number of teams -- the Jets, the Patriots, etc., -- that can't get pressure on the quarterback.

The real problem might lie in how Colts fans and players perceive the move. Yes, it would be saying "we're done in 2011" but everyone knows that, even if management steadfastly refuses to say it. (Which is totally fine -- no one should ever roll over and play dead in the NFL, at least not in Week 6.)

But maybe more importantly, it would be admitting that the Colts are in full rebuild mode, as they'd start 2012 without their top wideout and their second-best defensive player.

Provided that Peyton Manning will return next year -- something we don't know yet -- it puts Colts management in a tough spot. Can they really rebuild while he's in the final stages of his career? Manning gives them a chance to win like maybe no other player in the NFL. But at some point, the Colts do have to consider life after Manning.

Mathis I would keep for sure, Wayne on the other hand I think you need to trade while theres value. If the team continues to struggle Wayne could become a problem in the locker room and has been very good for the Colts for yrs, but you have to make some moves sometimes for the future and this is the one. There was a deal a few yrs back for Ocho for 2 first rounders, that deal was turned down and Cincy ended up trading him for next to nothing this past off season. Dont make that mistake

tcpokerrun, I think you are spot on regarding Reggie Wayne.Irsay may say he's not going anywhere, but now is the time to trade him while his stock is high. There are probably a half a dozen contending teams who could use a WR of his caliber.N.E., Houston,NY Jets, SF, just to name a few.I'm a Patriot fan & I'd love to see Reggie Wayne come to NE & I'd be willing to bet Tom Brady would agree with me.Wayne would make a much better weapon than Ocho & I hope Kraft & BB go after him.

Reggie Wayne would make any contending team even better; With Collie,Garcon, & the younger WR's playing well with Painter & Addie injured, WR is not Indy's problem. Reggie is expendable.Mr Irsay is a bussiness man;He know's you sell high & I think that's exactly what he'll do.

The Colts are between a rock and a hard place in trying to satisfy fans while being realistic about the present, and more accurately the future. While it won't make fans happy to see Reggie Wayne be shipped off to a contender such as the Texans, his value will never be higher than it is today. The Colts are a lock for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes and truly need to consider drafting him as it generally takes two to three years to develop a starting QB, Matt Stafford and Matt Ryan aside. Luck seems like a lock to start sooner than later, and Peyton Manning may never be the player he's always been going forward.  The Indy fans don't even want to consider that possibility, but nerve damage is about as serious as it gets. Age does not help the healing process, and Manning would play if he could. The fact that he isn't, speaks volumes to the seriousness of his injury. If his career is over, then  fans of all teams will feel Indy's loss as the sport will have lost one of the all-time greats long before his career should have ended.

Everyone has there opinion on this one.  If they get the first pick in the draft, do they take Andrew Luck?  Hell No!  If Peyton had a year or 2 left maybe, but I believe he has 3 or 4 more good years.  They find the best value for the pick, or trade down, or whatever it takes to get Manning more talent.  I promise I will address the trade talk soon.  I'm sure alot of people can see Luck being the under study and following in Peytons wings for the next 12 years.  That could happen, but the mentor has a few years left, and you better do your best to stoke the fire for that.  There are no "locks" at the QB spot, so as long as you have one you better ride it.  In response to the trade talk I would leave Reggie Wayne alone.  Unless he wants to leave, than let him, but I have'nt heard that to be true.  Anyone else on the list, maybe, maybe not.  I think the Colts need to suck this season up as a loss, and prepare for next year in the best way they can.  Peyton deserves a second ring, let's hope he gets it!

why, have you watched him lately? with manning out he isn't even trying to make that extra little effort...just going through the motions...probably saving himself for his last few years. To me that's a big red flag. Nothing has ever gone wrong for Wayne before, but now that it is, his true colors have emerged. PGarcon is playing brilliantly like a guy who wants to help his team. Wayne should be benched.

If they trade Reggie Wayne, I hope they plan on picking up Michael Floyd with their first pick.  If they get the #1 pick, they can still trade down and stockpile some future 1st round picks and still get Floyd or Blackmon.
