Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

I don't see what the big deal is here. I doubt Harbaugh is the first coach to ever get excited at a win and I doubt Schwartz is the first coach to blow his top at another coach. Do you think Bellichek is always classy with other coaches after a Patriots game? Especially against the Jets after spygate? I highly doubt it. Just get over it everybody and get ready for the next games.

BULLSHIT! You are a douche. That is exactly like you. Bad enough you embarrassed yourself like that, but your wife and kids have to show their face in public knowing they are in tight with a complete assclown.

Grats tard, you showed the world your true face. Mommy must be proud.

When you go to midfield for a shake after a big win, you have to consider that the other coach just had a tough loss.  Harbaugh definately showed up Schwartz by the way he acted (especially the slap on the back).  Schwartz acted a bit like a baby.  Both need to learn some professionalism.  They are paid too much to act like that.

Yes, perhaps Harbaugh was a little too excited. I would agree with professionalism, however there is still nothing wrong with a little celebrating after an upset win. Could Jim Harbaugh have toned it down just a little? Probably, but I will take a coach anyday who brings a new found energy into a program that has not been 5-1 since 1998. Harbaugh's behaviour may have been a little questionable, however Schwartz displayed a total lack of sportsmanship by trying to chase down Harbaugh to start a fight. At least Harbaugh was trying to get away from the situation. Schwartz would not let it go, and had to be pulled away from doing somthing he would have regretted later on.

Schwartz acted like a little b*tch.  If you can't take excitement from the coach of a team which was dreadful last year and they knock off one of the last unbeaten teams, then you need to quit the league.  People in sports (in defintely in life) need to suck it up and realize that every little thing is not a personal affront to them.

Schwartz showed his ass in a similar manner against Dallas after Detroit beat the Cowboys. That said, Harbaugh needs to act like he's won a game before. I realize these two programs have been on hard times and they are excited to be winning again, but acting like a professional isn't really asking too much is it? Doctors don't spike the scalpel after a successful, life-saving surgery... why do coaches have to act like they made the big plays that won the game?

redwings1969 - I can't believe you even know how to spell you buttplug!!!  Poor Schwartzy can't handle a man handshake!?!?  He looked like a fool.  Lions are having a great season so far but thier moronic coach can't take a loss like a man.  I realize you don't know much about winning but if the Lions truely are a good team (and I think they are) more wins are coming and there is no need to get all crybaby about one loss.  Lookin' like a fool are you!!!
