Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

And dont rip on fans for being optimistic about their sports teams.  The tigers had a great year and the lions finally look good, if you live in the now it is something to be excited about.  So in your eyes we should just sit back and say, same old lions, to a 5-1 team and say, tigers wont do nothing, to a team that just missed the world series.  And the Wings, well they are the same old Wings as usual.  Good time to be a detroit sports fan, cant remember a time I watched so much damn tv in a long time.

Ops, well I guess I made a mistake. Its tough to argue with someone who wants to get off the subject due to a simple spelling error. My spelling is irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Brian8ball all you do is talk s**t on here so grow up.  We all know the history and past records of our teams so nothing you say is insightful.  OHHH it hurts so bad that the Tigers lost and lions were once 0-16.  Anyone in coach Schwartz position would've wanted to dot Harbaughs eye for that.  So his reaction isn't real surprising.  Both acted stupid but I wouldnt put up with it either.  But talk about childish your posts are worse than either of those guys today.  Take a breath and calm down these are just games and both teams are playoff bound at this point, not so sure about your Jets though, worry about them.

Well since you put it that way... it's tough to argue with someone who can't spell "loser".

YEAH, SERIOUSLY. I think it is hillarious to see a Detroit fan try to defend a coach who was a poor looser and tried to pick a fight because he was on the loosing end of a football game. How bout shame on the professional football coach who gets paid millions for acting like a cry baby?

>>>Let's see if Goodell fines white guys instead of the usual black guys.

I'm sure Goodell fines everyone who deserves it. If the percentage is weighted on the side of black players, I suppose that could be, just maybe, because black players are 70% of the league and thus there are many, many more of them to do things that deserve to be fined.

Do you think that's possible?

Seriously? It's hilarious to see 49ers fans trying to rationalize about what happened? "Shame on him for being excited"? How about shame on a professional football coach who gets paid Millions for acting like a teenager?

Jim Harbaugh is a very energetic individual. It is somthing that the 49ers have needed for awhile now. Shame on him for being excited about winning a game that most people said that the 49ers would not win. Any coach or player should be excited about an upset win especially if that win puts your team at a win mark that hasent been seen since 1998.  If you cant have a little fun and celebrate a well deserved victory then you belong in the NFL (No Fun League)

If you want to talk about being totally classless and spastic then you SHOULD be talking about Jim Schwartz who acted like a spoiled brat who tried to chase down Jim Harbaugh to start a fight. How classles is that?!?!?!?!?!?!? By reviewing the replays it appears that Jim Schwartz was the instigator who was just trying to cause problems. Hopefully the league takes action against him. Perhaps you should look at the entire video before calling Jim Harbaugh a classless individual.

Schwartz should be suspended for charging another coach, irregardless of how classless Harbaugh may have been. He has spent all season giving that gratuitous and unsportsmanlike fist pump after victories and now he is showing what a sore loser is really is.
