Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

I am a fan of neither team, but really.. Harbaugh gives an exhuberant "hard" handshake ans Schwartz gets po'd.  Schwartz didn't like losing that game the way he did. He wasw upset, and whatever. Lions are 5-1 now deal with the loss and move on, before the Lions go back tpo being the Lions and start losing.  I saw nothing wrong with what Harbaugh did. Hard handshake, maybe. But he did it, gave him a pat on the back and started tpowards his lockeroom  That is when Schwartz went after him. Bumped him and obvioulsy said something, prompting Harbaugh to reply. Then Schwartz kept at it.  My money would have been on Harbaugh.  Grow up Schwartz, take thew loss like a man, and get your team ready for the following week. What a joke. Poor sportsmanship, poor sport  showed there by Lions coach, plain and simple

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

I don't see what the big deal was.  Harbaugh was happy for his team winning a big game, and the only amatuerish behavior was that of Schwarz trying to run him down and shout at him.  The whole handshake after a game really doesn't make any sense to me anyway.   He did the exact same thing in the orange bowl after leading Stanford to an impressive win.

Wilson you're an idiot.  Harbaugh didn't "show his stomach."  He untucked his shirt and some skin was briefly exposed.  Watch the replay you tool.

Just another member of the media trying to stir up controversy.

The guy has the f'in right to be excited.  His team just won on the road AGAIN.  Don't you realize what that means in the NFL?

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Schwartz loked like a soar loser running after Harbaugh.  Did you see the 49er player (#76) laughing at how childish he was acting.  Harbaugh should have taken the high road and just apologized at that time.  Clearly harbaugh didn't realize he offended Schwartz with the handshake.  Schwartz just needs to get over it.

Hey OUPioneer, great thoughts on Frisco fans..Detroit has much better leadership, like your mayor. Where is he and what's his name?  Oh yeah, inmate number 5986890 in the Michigan Penal system. Of course you are an amateur hiding behind a false identity...what is your inmate number?

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

I wouldn't put myself in the shoes of great coaches and players and expect to know what they're feeling.  Maybe most armchair quarterbacks think they know better, but obviously when you have a big win on a big stage it gets quite exciting.  I enjoy seeing coaches who love the game and seeing players (like Brett Favre) who refuse to leave the game because they love playing too much.  It's always refreshing to see all that energy and excitement from people who play the game because THEY LOVE IT and not just for a big paycheck.  The NFL needs more coaches like Harbaugh and Schwartz, and more players like Favre and Warner.  People who go out there to have fun and win.  I'll take an energetic Harbaugh over a lifeless Singletary anyday.

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Honestly he was excited and chest bumped his player shook Schwartz hand and patted him on the back as he passed by him.  Doesn't look like a push at all and the handshake was too hard?? Come on if he is mad about a hard handshake he should be coaching gymnastics.  Id be mad too if an opposing coach pushed my coach, but it really doesn't look like that.

Harbaugh is a classless pr*ck. He's proves it over and over again. Very good football coach who let's his poor judgement and amateurish antics bring him down. The fun thing is, he'll get that back down the road. Paybacks are a bitch!!!

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Harbaugh and Schwartz are both to blame for letting the emotions get the best of them.  One was a sore winner and the other was a sore loser.  They both need to re-evaluate how they handle themselves but it is good to see some fire out of the lions and the 49ers.  Both teams are playing hard for their coaches and were even ready to fight for them after the game.  It's fun seeing these teams succeed and they will be stronger because of this i feel.

Bottom line in this game is that Stafford played horrible. He had no feeling for the rush, missed open receivers and played lack luster. In fact the whole team played with no enthusiasm. Today, they looked like the Lions of old.
