Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

Schwartz unimpressed with Harbaugh's antics

Harbaugh takes d baggery to a new level, Lions have done well so far this season and deserve props...it was a close game, this game couldve gone either way, given the questionable calls.   I mean who wouldnt like Harbaugh right? Also,  the fans are great in Frisco too...only 200 felony assaults per game, down from 400 since the start of the year...given that there were almost murders at the start of the season.  Stand proud NINERS!!!!

As an observer with no axe to grind - I've seen little league coaches act with more class. It's great to be excited but - grow up Harbaugh and act like a professional. It's not nice to be treated with disrespect but to chase down the other coach to voice your displeasure - it's not like he spit on you - get over it Schwartz. And for the NFL to pull the clip from CBS (thank you Youtube)- so childish! Too bad this overshadows a good game. Nice game played by both teams- too bad your coaches couldn't follow suit.

I think you are a bit scared that your team has peaked. They are a good team, but you are a loser of a fan. cant get this butt hurt over one loss. You are equally as butt hurt as schwartz was after that game hahaha.

I'm hurt over ONE loss? LOL    I'm afraid my team has "peaked"?  What?   LOL

I didn't expect the Lions to be 5-0, so 5-1 is hardly tough to accept.  I gamble heavily on the NFL and took SF plus the five points, that's good for a couple hundred bucks.

You guys are only making this about a Lions loss or about me because you don't want to admit the obvious.

The obvious is that Harbaugh was 100 percent WRONG and that coaches in the NFL NEVER do that.... NEVER.

If you want to keep making this argument about something else, then keep on doing exactly that.  Children alway do that... It's ok.

Lol I'm fat? no.  Your Not mad? hahaha thats ridiculous.  You are delusional and scared, hiding behind your empty insults and internet temper tantrum. Just cry it out rather than getting all mad on CBS.com. But maybe your doing both.

This statement right here shows how much of an idiot you are.  Get a clue. It's an emotional, physical game.  Schwartz was out of line.  It happens all the time.  He'll likely get his fine and pay it.  But this statement is pure stupidity.

He's not getting fine a penny... not a chance.  If it's ok as a coach to untuck your shirt, jump up in the air as you run and pound the other coaches hand with all your might and push him out of the way, it's ok for Schwartz to get angry.   Wait and see, there will be no fine for Schwartz... that's ludicrous... that's beyond insane actually.
