49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh explains what happened between him and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, following San Francisco's 25-19 win over the Lions in Detroit.

Posted by Ryan Wilson

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his exhuberance. And, really, who can blame him. San Francisco is 5-1 and Alex Smith is playing like a franchise quarterback, two things nobody figured possible … well, ever.

So after the 49ers' fourth quarter come-from-behind win in Detroit Sunday, Harbaugh was predictably pumped up.

Maybe that's understating it a bit. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Harbaugh looked like a frat dude on spring break after pounding vodka and Red Bulls for two straight days.

In the time it took him to sprint to midfield, Harbaugh showed us his belly and gave Lions coach Jim Schwartz a HOW YA' DOIN'? handshake typically reserved for long lost relatives and people who like each other. That last act prompted Schwartz to give Harbaugh a "Seriously? Are you a grown man acting like that?" glare before running him down, bumping him and sharing a few choice words.

The two teams -- and their coaches -- had to be separated, although we would love to have seen how that coaching grudge match played out.

"I went to congratulate coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said in his postgame press conference. "I didn't expect an obscenity at that point so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game.

"Obviously, when you win a game like that you're excited and things like that, but I think there's a protocol that goes with this league."

By the way, Harbaugh's clown-car antics make Pete Carroll's sideline cheerleading seem benign, even tolerable. That's no easy chore.

After Harbaugh had time to reflect on his antics, he admitted that his emotions may have gotten the best of him.

"I was really revved up. That wasn't me, just shook his hand too hard. ... That's on me," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Handshake was too hard."

Still no word on why Harbaugh showed us his stomach.

Very weird for an NFL coach - you had to appreciate the belly show though.

Schwartz is just butt hurt because his formerly undefeated team was defeated.  Harbaugh was/is pumped up, get over it. He should be pumped.

The Lions lost to what today was the better team, great game, could have gone either way.  But for you as a fan to back Harbaugh up in this case proves you're just a little punk so used to losing you don't know how to handle success.  The Lions sucked in the past, but as they started winning they did it with class.

Harbaugh is a punk ass bi***.... and his fans on these boards are like over excited little girls..... give me a break.

NOBODY does what Harbaugh did today... not ever.  You haven't seen that happen this year after an NFL football game and you won't see it again the rest of the season.

Only a classless coach of obviously a team that has zero class would do that....

Really Schwantz is gonna get upset over that. What about his "exuberance" during the cowboy game.  Always fist pumping and jumping ip and down.  His team got beat AT HOME and of course the opposing coach is gonna be excited.  Schwantz needs to grow up

I agree. Jim Schwartz needs to condcut himself with more composure.
Listen son.  I've watched hundreds of NFL games in my life and never do you see a coach do what Harbaugh did, it was unsportsmanlike, childish and immature... NFL coaches don't do that.  Coaches NEVER do that, not even after a victory that takes them to the Superbowl.

I was reading smack talk all week about how the Lions receivers were going to run wild on the 49ers smaller DBs....yeah right!)

Little man you're getting too carried away.... not even once did Schwartz talk smack this past week or this past 2 years for that matter. He's as professional as it gets.

Now go cuddle with your mommy or something, calm down you excited little man.

I agree. Jim Schwartz needs to condcut himself with more composure. Sure his team got pawned big time by the 49ers(....I was reading smack talk all week about how the Lions receivers were going to run wild on the 49ers smaller DBs....yeah right!) But that does not give him the right to be vindictive and spiteful. If he had called better plays in the last minute the Lions could have won the game. Instead the Lions looked clueless. Were they trying to run out the clock? Were they trying to go down field and score a touchdown. Were they even aware that they were not leading? Were they high on drugs? If I was playing football on the computer I would have been throwing long passes to try to score a touchdown in the final minute. Jim Schwartz looked overmatched against Harbaugh and he did not like it. So Schwartz is making stuff up to make Harbaugh look bad.

As many people like to say regarding work..."Mind your own business. Do what you need to do. Do not care what other people are doing. You go to work to make money...not friends." Schwartz's feelings got hurt because Harbaugh did not give him a consoling hug? Oh...poor baby!

I like Harbough, but it was so childish the way he acted and pulled his shirt up and jumped and slapped the other coach's back when shaking hands.  Wow, it was just a regular season game, he did not have to act that way and show up the other coach like that.
