Jon Gruden signs 5-year extension for MNF gig

Since replacing Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football, Jon Gruden's settled in pretty nicely as a broadcaster. But the perpetual rumors of Gruden departing for whatever available coaching opportunities were out there, most recently with a report that the gig in Miami was his to turn down.

Those rumors will die down now, as ESPN announced on Monday that Gruden signed a five-year extension that will keep him on Monday Night Football through 2017.

"Our Monday Night Football crew is special, and to have the opportunity to continue to be a part of this team, working these big-time NFL prime time games every week on ESPN, I’m fired up," Gruden said in a release from the network.

Yes, everyone was upset that his statement didn't include "THIS GUY" -- a reference to Gruden's heavy usage of a certain descriptor for players.

And there are probably some people who are upset that Gruden's on the telecast for the next six years; his style of announcing seems to grate on various viewers, but he has developed a nice rapport with Ron Jaworski and Mike Tirico in the booth. That was lacking -- mightily -- from the rendition that featured Kornheiser, for a number of reasons.

But while Gruden might be full of enthusiasm, he also knows what he's talking about, which is refreshing change of pace from some of the folks ESPN's trotted out for color commentary over the past few years.

I grew up listening to John Madden, these horrendous SHAMS otherwise known as Jon Gruden and Cris Collinsworth are just flat out insulting to me at this point..  Gruden just spews hot air usually, while contradicting himself through almost the entire game every time.  Not to mention trying to praise almost every player on the field before they screw up or start dropping passes to which he will do a 180 with his opinion of them in seconds.

Now listen up Dolphin fans.  As his name has been tossed around on sports radio for two weeks as the next head coach, I hope this puts the nail in the coffin on that one.  Props to Gruden for doing what HE wants to do.  He's very good and everyone knows it.  However, even if JG had an itch, an inkling, a 'maybe', why in the world would he take over a franchise in disarray.  The only person on earth who would do that is Bill Parcells.

Jaws is one of the most knowledgeable commentators in the game.  No commentator watches as much film as he does.

Let's not get too excited about Chucky's new deal, I bet he has an out clause if he gets the NFL opportunity he is seeking. The thing is, he has a ring and a great reputation, the ease of commentary is a great gig instead of sleeping on a cot and watching 500 hours of tape for game day prep. I heard that Gruden was so intense he literally would work himself into a frenzy. I guess he may still be  bit burned out from coaching, and ESPN made a good choice: he's an informative and knowledgeable football "guy"....Congrats to Chucky.

Not a problem with "Chuckie", but can someone tell me how on God's green earth that Jaws still has a job in the same booth?...He brings nothing to the show!

I wish the 5 year contract would have been with Ohio State, or to get completely crazy with my hopes, BGSU ideally.  Oh well.

I imagine the Browns will yet again go in a completely different direction in another year or 2, so perhaps there's some hope there.
