Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

One of the names I mentioned in Sorting the Sunday Pile for the Raiders in their search to replace Jason Campbell was retired Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer. But even though the Raiders were reportedly trying to get Palmer, it seemed a highly unlikely end result, given the stubborn nature of Cincy owner Mike Brown.

But Oakland found a way to pry Palmer away from the Bengals, dealing a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 conditional first-round pick to the Bengals for the no-longer-retired quarterback. Reports indicate that the 2013 conditional pick is a first-round pick only if Oakland wins at least one playoff game.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms that the trade -- as originally reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports -- is a done deal. Glazer noted that Hue Jackson's close relationship with Brown -- Jackson was the former wide receivers coach in Cincinnati -- helped grease the wheels.

What likely helped grease the wheels more? The first-round draft pick that the Raiders gave the Bengals ... because they had to. As Ryan noted yesterday, the Raiders aren't exactly stocked with draft picks these days, having already given up their second-, fourth- and seventh-round picks in trades, and used their third-round pick on Terrelle Pryor.

Palmer to the Raiders

In other words, the Raiders only had one real pick of value in 2012 to give up, and they were apparently willing to move it in order to make themselves a contender for the remainder of the year.

More than anything, though, Mike Brown deserves a tremendous round of applause for absolutely crushing this scenario with Palmer. He called the quarterback's bluff, refused to deal the quarterback, landed a new franchise guy in Andy Dalton, and then when a team got really desperate, received two first-round picks in exchange.

The conditional pick is likely something that involves the Raiders making the postseason and/or riding Palmer to the Super Bowl; at least one would hope anyway. Otherwise, Oakland has, once again, undervalued draft picks.

It's worth noting, though, that the Raiders are anticipating a slew of compensatory draft picks in 2012, because free agents Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller, Robert Gallery and Thomas Howard all departed the Bay Area.

Also worth noting: Jason Campbell's time as a Raider is now finished, for all intents and purposes. He's a free agent after this season and given the committment Oakland gave to Palmer plus Campbell's injury, it's hard to imagine him playing another snap for Oakland.

They are, at least now, all in on Carson Palmer.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

I don't see the Broncos trading Orton to a rival within their division. However, but David Garrard may have made sense.
Also, I think it takes QBs time to learn an offense and I don't see Carson Palmer coming right in and being good. Look at what happened to Kerry Collins. If Palmer can run this offense - and you need to be able to pass in order to win in this league - it would be unprecedented.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

This does make perfect sense - sorry doubters. Palmer is locked in until 2014 so you get at least 3 seasons (don't know if it is through 2014 or not).

Now next years 1st round pick had to go for a qb anyways so that is a straigt up trade. You really didn't do anything with that pick than what you were already going to do.

Now for the year after that you did give up a 1st / 2nd round pick so the questoin is what did you get for that pick. To me you got an opportunity to make the postseason this year. This will help you retain players this and next year. You also devaluate the value of this years pick if you make the playoff...

I don't like what they have done with the other picks (like Pryor was a stupid pick) but this is one move I like....
The problem with saying next year's 1st round pick is a 'straight up trade' is.............With the new rookie salary cap -- you'd be paying a QB, depending on where you draft, about a 1/10 of what you are going to be paying Palmer.  Palmer's deal does go until 2014 and his salary goes up each year topping out at 14 million.  The deal also includes a 1 million dollar bonus for each year he is on the roster.

Those picturing Palmer being a savior didn't watch him much in 2010.  He finished the year with 26 tds and 20 ints and his arm strength is NOWHERE near what it once was.  If he comes back and is worse off than he was in 2010, you just picked up a really expensive QB you are stuck with til 2014.

For a quick fix -- I understand the deal, even though Oakland mortgaged their future to win now.  If they don't get it done in the playoffs -- it is going to sting come draft time, as they don't have a pick in 2012 until the 5th round, though they should get a compensatory pick around the 3rd round for Asoumgha.

Oakland could have traded for Orton and got the same type of production they will see from Palmer and would have paid next to nothing for him.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

Let's keep this simple enough even a dummy can understand.  Mike Brown traded a whiny 32 year old quarterback that was NEVER going to take another snap for his team and that was retiring for at least a 1st and a 2nd round pick.
And how does that change the fact that Mike Brown traded him?

Oh and the Lions are a farce.  They will fail in the first round of the playoffs, or until Glass Stafford breaks again. Enjoy it while you can

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

Does anyone out there know if Palmer is in shape?  Or does he even have the heart to play football anywhere?  I'm guessing that the raiders have a commitment from him to come in and play, but I haven't heard a peep from Palmer to confirm any of this.

There are NO garauntees in the draft.  Sure they are 1st round picks but who is to say those picks are going to be locks?  Nobody knows.  And based on the Raiders history with drafting QBs (see JaWalrus) why spend millions and wait 2-3 years just to find out he sucks when you can get an upgrade at the position that is decent in a run-first offense?  Why can't people see this as a WIN-WIN trade?  I think this works well for both teams.  Carson was not going to play for Cincy anymore so they got something in return and basically got more for him what they spent to get him.  They are getting two first round picks for a first round drafted player.  Win for Cincy.  Oakland needs a decent QB and an upgrade from Kyle Blower...I mean Boller.  This team is too good right now to have a wasted season.  Boller will start against the Chiefs this week, then the bye week and Carson will be starting the week after that.  Win for Oakland.

Bengals trade Palmer to Raiders for 1st rounders

Wow, two first round draft picks does seem a little bit steep, but there is not guarantee that a franchise will always get the value in return for a first round pick (see Maybin)   I do feel thaqt Carson has a lot of football left in him and I have seen him play well against the Steelers for many years.  With the Raiders leading the league in rushing they now have a good decision maker that will be able to work off play- action pass plays.  I am glad I picked up D'Moore in my fantasy league.

Shouldn't be too bad with the new rookie wage scale first and second round picks will actually be worth the money to sign them as oppposed to the insane amount of money they were getting before.
