Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

Even though the Vikings were down 29 points, Donovan McNabb was indeed benched for Christian Ponder on Sunday night in a loss at Chicago. Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said he'd announce his decision on who'll start going forward Wednesday, but his mind is reportedly already made up and Ponder will get the nod in Week 7 for the Vikings.

That's according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, who reports that Frazier "has made the change and notified those involved." This is a bit awkward considering McNabb said Monday that he expected to remain the starter.

The logic behind the move to Ponder is pretty simple: the Vikings aren't winning now whether McNabb or Ponder's under center, and McNabb simply isn't anything more than a one-year rental for Minnesota.

Ponder, on the other hand, is the theoretical future of the franchise, as my colleague Pete Prisco wrote on Monday morning. And Minnesota, already five games back of the division-leading Packers, needs to find out if Ponder can be as successful as they hope.

It's unlikely he'll turn around the Vikings season, but he did provide a spark to the offense Sunday, albeit against a prevent defense from the Bears.

And as I noted in Sorting the Sunday Pile, it sure sounds like the rest of the members of the Vikings offense are on board with plugging Ponder in and trying to see what they've got from the rookie out of Florida State.

It's the smart, logical move, even if it won't pay off immediate dividends in terms of games won. But then again, McNabb didn't appear to helping much either.

Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

Look at how many years Emmit Smith and Thurman Thomas played.  They each had more than 10 years of 1000+ yds and I think Adrian is a better athlete than either of them.  I do not think it is accurate to assume that AD has only two more good years left, in fact I think that is absurd.  That said the Vikings need to draft well and sign the right free agents in the few seasons.  Next year Bernard Berrian and McNabb salary are gone so that definitely provides us cap space.

Wow, it sounds like you are trying to make Minnesota the old folks home of the NFL.  I get that you know the names, and that is one list of great players...five years ago.  The only one on that list that would be worth going after is Fitz, as he would be a nice reliable piece for your young QB.  Manning is breaking at best, and may just be plain broken at this point.  You definitely don't need to bring in old, slow players to deal with the strong passing games in your division.  You can't keep mortgaging the future of the team by putting relics on the field.

Suprising considering McNabb had the best completion % of the week (19/24) only 177 yards but, that's the WRs fault. They need someone who can stretch the field. How bout aging Fitzgerald of ARI. I disagree with Peterson having 3-5 years left. More like 2. They actually need to win now. Get some veterans. How bout Peyton Manning for Ponder. Get Dawkins and Farrior for defense. Hines Ward if you can't deal for Fitz (some think he's still good).

I am a Viking fan, can't help it it's in my blood, and I think this is the right move.  No dispespect to McNabb, he wasn't very good, but certainly wasn't all his fault for the poor start.  If your going to have a down year make the most of it!  Let the young man you think is the future grow.  All day has 3 to 5 great years left, let's get things right asap so we don't waste one of the best evers time!  Find out if Ponder is the guy, if not lose the rest and draft Luck!

Agreed.......cocaine is a hell of a drug apparently.....No way those trades are realistic.. they could thnk of trading kevin williams for a draft pick maybe a 2 or 3rd rounder. Since they're young at that position.

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure I read a Viking fan say that they should trade Jared Allen for Jason Pierre Paul AND a draft pick and that they should trade Kevin Williams for Ndamukong Suh.  Geez... you need a little dose of reality dude!

It only took the Vikings 6 weeks to find out Mcnabb is garbage? He's one of the most over rated player in the history of football.
