Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

Even though the Vikings were down 29 points, Donovan McNabb was indeed benched for Christian Ponder on Sunday night in a loss at Chicago. Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said he'd announce his decision on who'll start going forward Wednesday, but his mind is reportedly already made up and Ponder will get the nod in Week 7 for the Vikings.

That's according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, who reports that Frazier "has made the change and notified those involved." This is a bit awkward considering McNabb said Monday that he expected to remain the starter.

The logic behind the move to Ponder is pretty simple: the Vikings aren't winning now whether McNabb or Ponder's under center, and McNabb simply isn't anything more than a one-year rental for Minnesota.

Ponder, on the other hand, is the theoretical future of the franchise, as my colleague Pete Prisco wrote on Monday morning. And Minnesota, already five games back of the division-leading Packers, needs to find out if Ponder can be as successful as they hope.

It's unlikely he'll turn around the Vikings season, but he did provide a spark to the offense Sunday, albeit against a prevent defense from the Bears.

And as I noted in Sorting the Sunday Pile, it sure sounds like the rest of the members of the Vikings offense are on board with plugging Ponder in and trying to see what they've got from the rookie out of Florida State.

It's the smart, logical move, even if it won't pay off immediate dividends in terms of games won. But then again, McNabb didn't appear to helping much either.

Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

I am an Eagles fan.  People don't realize that the biggest problems that McNabb have now are the same problems he had in Philly.  He is not accurate; he has bad footwork; is not a leader and doesnt necessarily hate losing.  The only difference is that, for all his faults; Andy Reid was very good and getting the best out of McNabb and putting the team in position to win games.  Now, the same problems exist but Mike Shannahan was not willing to deal with all of his flaws and Leslie Frazier doesn't seem to have the offensive structure to get the most out of a QB.

BTW... to the person who says that the Vikings should do more play action and running the football... that's a good theory but the problem with McNabb is that the less he throws, the less accurate he becomes.  The reason why Andy Reid continued to throw and throw and thow was because he realized that the only way to get McNabb into a rhythm was to keep throwing early and get his confidence going.  Otherwise he would get down on himself and you could see the lack of confidence on his face.  I will always give Reid credit for that.

The national perspective was always that Eagles fans were unfair to McNabb because of all of the games he won for the organization but you are now seeing what we saw all along.

I think Ponder is certainly an upgrade, because he has more mobility than McNabb currently has. My only concern is how bad the offensive line is playing and we don't want Ponder getting destroyed before he even gets a chance to pass. Charlie Johnson has been horrible, especially last game. Julius Peppers had his way with Charlie Johnson and it was pretty hard to watch. They need to upgrade the O-Line, safety, and WR positions. Of course there are smaller positions of needs like LB and DT, but they can upgrade some of them in free agency. They need to get a franchise LT to protect Ponder's blindside in the next draft. Maybe if they could land Matt Kalil from USC, Jonathan Martin from Stanford, or Riley Reiff from Iowa, in that order, depending on where they pick.

Sucks for AP because Ponder gonna try to air it out to prove himself...bummer dude!...they shold have flip flopped worked more wildcat packages use McNabb for the play action based on run first and not require him to throw much and throw Webb and Ponder in for the trick plays and wildcats...hope you are right Les because this might get ugly in terms of if Ponder gets hurt then what?...I hate to say it about my team but we will be in a big mess in the coming years we will be cellar dwellers for a few years but its a good thing because we can pick high in the draft for a few years and get our team young...I guarauntee Ponder will not be the answer in a few weeks there will be cries for Joe Webb and then it will be good to have the old man on the bench to close out weith dignity.   Regardless of who is under center until we solidify that Offensive line and get some legit recievers this will always be the case for my team and Adrian Peterson will do like Barry Sanders and retire early because the 09 season will be the closest to the superbowl we will get for several years...I love my team I am die hard no turning back but this is real football talk and that's the way it is the decisions being made are not smart ones Ponder should not have been taken in the first round..i believe he would have been there in the second or third round...and if we really needed to to a QB in that first round Ryan Mallet would have been the better pick IMO...but nonetheless an Offensive tackle should have been the priority in the first round and Webb should have gotten the nod and you build your O Line and with AP in the back field you didn't need a great "first round" QB I mean haven't we learned in the last 10 or so years there are very few first rounders who actually live up to the hype? there are more late rounders that are making the noise than anything in the league(i.e Tom Brady) ...So be advised Vikings nation Ponder will NOT be be the face of the franchise....anyway Skol Vikings!!
Ponder doesn't run the offense, If anything AP will get more of a work load to offset Ponder's lack of experience or talent. And regardless of whether Ponder is your future or not, Minnesota is 0-6 so may as well see what the kid has got. Either he will shine and there will be light at the end of the tunnel or he will suck and you guys can pick up Andrew Luck or some other 1st rnd stud hopefully.

Good move by the Vikings. If Ponder is the man they can draft some offensive lineman to keep him healthy for the next 10 years. Seems  the Colts are losing on purpose to get their next QB, Luck. Vikings also need a corner, but that maybe in the 3rd round. At least 2 linemen with the first 2 picks for the Vikes. Thats what they need.

Age "combined with" LAZINESS is why McNabb lost his mobility. Interesting that you named Garcia as an example, Garcia (a workout fanatic) was still very mobile and elusive at 39 years old, Lazy butt McNabb can't run a lick at only 34.

You seriously think Percy Harvin is almost burnt out and done at age 23??? What are you smoking dude!? Percy is the same age as Ponder, they will grow together. Percy should be great for the next 10 years, he will get wiser and learn when to pull a Marvin Harrison and just hit the turf once in awhile.

Peterson on the other hand is determined to shorten his career. He is VASTLY OVERRATED, he runs hard but not smart or skillfully. Peterson relies almost completely on his physical attributes, he not the smart one. The dude can't block a lick, and can't catch a lick. Peterson has done nothing to expand his game over the years. In the pass happy league of today pass blocking and catching are every bit as important as running. Peterson is dumber than a box of rocks.

Report: Christian Ponder in as Vikings starter

I wouldn't have a firesale just yet with the vikings. This team is just 2 years removed from being 1 pass away from the super bowl. They do have some quality players, and do need some youth, but this team is built to contend now.

Jared Allen is a monster at DE, they have the best running back in football in Adrian Peterson, and a HOF offensive lineman with Hutchinson. The offense will be fine if they can get ponder going. The only thing they are missing is the tall deep threat that was lost with Sidney Rice. If the Vikings continue to struggle this year, they should be able to land a nice big receiver like Justin Blackmon or Alshon Jeffery.

If the team can contend, it will raise the chances that the town will invest in the new stadium they badly need. Agree that Ponder's time has come. A little excitement, and I want to see him prove he can stay healthy. If not, we have a third team in the suck for luck sweepstakes, which currently has Indianapolis in the lead.
