John Beck named Redskins starter by Mike Shanahan

On Tuesday, we got word there would be a quarterback change in Minnesota -- Wednesday morning brought word of a swap in Washington as well, with Mike Shanahan informing his players that John Beck would replace Rex Grossman in the Redskins starting lineup Sunday.

This isn't a huge surprise, considering that Grossman threw four picks (three to the Eye on Defense Award winner Kurt Coleman, who was able to "read Rex all day") and basically sunk the Redskins battleship before they ever even pulled out of the harbor.

Grossman got benched and Beck came in, gave the team a bit of the classic "backup quarterback spark" and managed to actually put a touchdown on the board.

Beck's better than "BAD REX." But he might not be better than "Good Rex." The problem is that Shanahan, like the rest of America, can't predict which Rex will show up, so he's left hoping that Beck's prepared to come in and run his offense effectively.

Mitigating some potential damage is Beck starting against the Panthers on Sunday. Yes, it's an away game, but the Panthers defense has looked like one of the worst units in the league. They're just 11th against the pass, but that's because teams are typically keeping the ball on the ground against Carolina, who rank 31st in the NFL against the run, giving up 140.3 yards per game on the ground.

Beck's job, then, should consist mainly of handing the ball to Tim Hightower, Roy Helu and Ryan Torain. Of course, that's what we though Grossman would be doing in Week 6 against the Eagles too.

For those keeping score at home, here's a list of the quarterbacks that have started for Washington since Dan Snyder took over as owner: Brad Johnson, Jeff George, Tony Banks, Shane Matthews, Patrick Ramsey, Danny Wuerffel, Tim Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell, Jason Campbell, Todd Collins, Donovan McNabb, Grossman and Beck.

As Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post tweeted, if you're a Redskins fan and you just read that list, go ahead and punch yourself in the face.

As a Redskin fan, I'm glad Romo is on the Cowboys. You can always count on him to blow the game when it's on the line.  Rex just blows.

Poor Rex, looks like he is intent on killing his career no matter where he goes. Sorry Rex, you are a turnover machine.

Rex led them to a 3-2 record & 2nd place in the NFC East, only 1 game behind the Giants.I guess I could understand it if they were 2-3.The Redskins lose a game to the Eagles, so Rex loses his job?The Eagles came in at 1-4, p%#^@ off & they probably would have beaten just about any team last Sunday. So Grossman throws 4 picks & loses his job.To John Beck?Maybe after the Panthers & Cam Newton beat's them 35-17, Grossman will get his job back.I realize that Shanahan is a good coach, but I really think he's making a big mistake here.I could understand it if they had a better 2nd string qb than Beck-Like Carson Palmer. With all the money & qb's Snyder has spent over the years, it's just plain foolish to have these 2 qb's to choose from;It seem's like the qb position wasn't as important to them as it should have been..Looking at their schedule I see only 3 more wins, Vs Miami,Seattle, & Minnesota. That would give them a 6-10 season & it would give us the Redskin team most of us expected them to be;Just another team that wont be in the playoffs.Of course, Beck could fool us & have a good game & the D could shut down Cam Newton.Neither of those things are likely to happen, so Shanahan can look at the bright side. His new qb will lead them to 3-3, then they can go to Buffalo & become 3-4.I'll give Beck 3 game's, at the most, before Grossman gets his job back, with a big old chip on his shoulder.Shanahan's knee-jerk qb change will come back to haunt him, sooner, rather than later.

As Shanahan would say... "McNabb, McNabb he`s our man.. if he can`t, oops, Rex, Rex, he`s our man.. if he can`t... damn, Beck, Beck, HE`S OUR man...." Shanahan keeps playing musical QBs like this, they`ll never be a top team.

It looks like the skins are headed "Beck" to the bottom of the NFC east. I liked the start they had, but with no stability at QB, a banged up O line and a defensive secondary full of holes in the middle, they only direction the skins are headed is down.
