We’ve discussed recently when, where and how the NFL is going to start testing for human growth hormone -- our colleague Mike Freeman has done an especially nice job with the reporting of this topic -- and in response, Showtime’s Inside the NFL crew welcomed Charles Barkley to a roundtable discussion about HGH and other performance-enhancing drugs.

It’s an interesting talk that you can see in the video below, and the always-outspoken Barkley makes some strong points.

“Any player who gets busted using performance-enhancing drugs is just an idiot,” he said. “No. 1, it’s illegal. It’s wrong. But if you get caught now, you know it’s coming. I mean, it would just make you an idiot.”

And more!

“Let me tell you something: when I saw that last week that they’re going to start testing next week, (I thought) there wasn’t a chance in the world. Some of those guys are cheating, and the union is going to protect them. They’re not going to let them start testing for HGH next week.”

And if you click the video, you get this nugget from Warren Sapp when he says his teammates who used steroids stood out “like a turd in a punch bowl.” So, you should probably click the video.

As Jim Brown said, hGH helps people recover quickly from injuries and exhaustion, gives energy anf vitality.  Hmm sounds pretty good, maybe it should be legal.  I see cigarettes killing even people who don't smoke, yet they are legal.  What gives?

Everyone is against PEDs but then if we do clean up professional sports everyone will complain the athletes are smaller and slower and it's just not as fun anymore.

Look at athletes around the world, most are smaller and slower than the US ones.  Futbol players probably don't use PEDs and Americans consider the game boring.  Well that's the level of athleticism you should expect.  I've watched the NFL for decades, as well as other sports.  The game was much slower back then.  I don't think Steve Young or John Elway would be able to scramble much at all nowadays because they're just too slow.  They also probably wouldn't put up great stats passing..although I'm not as sure about that, the game is certainly easier to play now too so they might still put up better stats today.

Does anybody really think pro sports want to stamp out PEDs?  MLB wants homeruns and 100 mph fastballs, football wants quick strong athletes delivering huge hits and completing amazing passes, basketball wants players that leap high and far.
