Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

Posted on: October 20, 2011 3:36 pm

J. Best apparently is being asked to consider sitting out the rest of the season (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

With Lions running back Jahvid Best recovering from his second concussion of the season, CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman reported Wednesday that people close to Best were urging him to strongly consider sitting out the rest of the season.

The Lions, at least publicly, seem to have a different opinion.

Though the team declined to comment on Freeman’s report, when asked if he expected Best back this season, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said, via the Oakland (Mich.) Press,“Oh certainly, I wouldn’t see any other reason unless anyone tells me otherwise. He’s a young player, guys miss some time during the course of the season. I don’t have any concerns, I’m sure he’ll be out there soon. He’s going to have a long, great career for us.’’

Lions coach Jim Schwartz told reporters, including Rapid Reporter John Kreger, that Best would return only when he passed all of his concussion tests.

Without Best and Jerome Harrison healthy to play, Detroit likely will give carries to Maurice Morris. Schwartz expects him to be ready.

“Maurice has answered the bell anytime it’s rung,” Schwartz said. “He’s been a very productive runner for us. We know that he’ll do well if he plays on Sunday.”

Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

Ugly guru I have Best in money league. While I agree health is obviously more important than fantasy football or even the real paying NFL. I have a problem with this Mike Freeman blog comment about Best. I just read from Detroit Free Press Best agent Arthur Fleming texted it was first he heard of Best being advised to sit out rest of season by "close advisors." Now that is his agent who you'd imagine is close to Best. Freeman needs to be a little less vague about who exactly he got this info from. Was it his GF/wife? Mother? Doctors who have treated him before?

I think just sitting out the season at this point is kinda preposterous rather than wait until after bye week to see how he is doing medically. After bye week it will be 3 weeks Best is out. What is point of sitting out the season if next year Best get's a concussion again in preseason. Very poor reporting by you MIKE FREEMAN as other news sites are picking up your comments or is that all you wished for? BOTTOM LINE MIKE FREEMAN: Best agent say's he has no clue as to what you are reporting. Either Best agent is not very close to Best or you exagerrated your post about Best.

Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

Best health is first and foremost !!!  Gosh, I got him on 3 of my 4 Fantasy Leagues.  I am more concerned about his future as a man than I am about my Fantasy Teams or the Detroit Lions.  Take your time, get healthy !!!

Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

I believe brian8ball is half right.  Teams are already teeing off on Stafford even with Best in the lineup.  Lion's have to rethink their offensive structure.  Instead of pass first to open the run, they need a steady dose of Morris and Williams - then pass.  Watch Atlanta this week.  They'll be keying on that pass...

As I already mentioned losing Best hurts because in almost every game he's played this year he's had at least one big play, having a big play kid like that available makes a big difference in a football game, it keeps teams honest.

As for Stafford, the o-line could be better but the overall stats are misleading.  Stafford has played 6 games this year and in 4 of those games has been sacked a total of 1 time combined in those 4 games.  He's on pace to throw for about 4500 yards and his passer rating is around 98 or so..... pretty darn good.  He's also thrown for 15 td's and 4 int's, also pretty good.  And 3 of those games were on the road. Not having Best isn't going to put Stafford on his ass much more then if Best was there.

Don't get me wrong, Lions fans that know their team realize this new management team still has to shore up the o-line so more holes are created for running backs, Best or anybody else to run through.  Good running teams have had success in the past with less then stellar running backs putting up big numbers so they have to do something with the o-line next off season, and I know they will do their best.

Stafford still has a lot of weapons.  Calvin demands crazy attention from other teams, Burleson is a good reciever.  If not for a couple huge catches by Titus Young against the Vikings and Cowboys we don't win those games, and of course Pettigrew is a very good tight end for the Lions.  BUT... Best caught a lot of balls from the backfield, so we'll miss him.  And we definitely can't afford anymore injuries to wide recievers or tight ends....

Tough loss last week, all we needed was one stop on 4th down and the game was over..... but, 5-1 is solid... can't complain.

Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

I know Lions fans aren't going to want to hear this. Hey, I know it sucks. And I was enjoying the run you guys are having too (I say are because, while losing Best hurts, they should be ok). It's a team you can't help but root for. But the player's longterm health has to be more important than the Lions run game.

I agree 100 percent.  As fans we constantly hope and pray our favourite team does well and our team's best players come back from injuries asap.  We forget they are human though... concussions are very serious and can affect somebody's life forever after football.  Best has had 3 concussions in his football career now counting college, I'm guessing he can't handle too many more before he hangs them up. But, at least he's already collected about 7 million dollars from the Lions in his very young career so he won't have to worry about money.

That all being said this situation is a perfect example why I almost always side with the owners when it comes to player contracts and especially players that do well and sit out for early extensions.  If Best has one more concussion and disappears, where do the Lions get that 7 million dollars back from?  Teams can't keep on giving successful players early extensions but burning on contracts like this.

I know if Best could miraculously start staying healthy, he's worth every dime of his deal.  God forbid the Lions o-line ever starts opening up some holes consistently, the kid would be dangerous.  But for now, let's just hope he can get healthy.... keep him out until he is though.

Lions believe Jahvid Best will return soon

Jahvid Best SHOULDN'T return soon, probably. With his history of concussions, and this being the second one this year, he should take some time and let his brain heal. And he should start to think about retiring, if he hasn't already.

I know Lions fans aren't going to want to hear this. Hey, I know it sucks. And I was enjoying the run you guys are having too (I say are because, while losing Best hurts, they should be ok).
