It may not look like it above, but everybody's happy ... for now. (AP/US PRESSWIRE)

Plenty of people (us included) thought that two first-round picks* was a steep price to pay for a quarterback who has been on his couch for eight months, and was last considered elite in 2005.

But Carson Palmer is now an Oakland Raider, and despite just a week of practice, he appears set to start against the Chiefs Sunday. And, yes, two first-rounders for a 31-year-old QB whose best days seemed behind him reeks of desperation, but Palmer's completely healthy, and he even took a pay cut to play for Oakland. Not so much because he's a swell guy and was willing to do anything to get out of Cincinnati (though that may have had something to do with it), but because Palmer's deal, as currently written, wasn't going to fit under the Raiders' salary cap.

Under his old contract (the one that would pay him $118 million and so incensed Bengals fans when Palmer "retired"), Palmer was set to earn $11.5 million. He instead restructured his contract and took a $5 million pay cut this season, an NFLPA source told ESPN's Adam Schefter Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs will battle the Oakland Raiders this Sunday at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Which team has the advantage? NFL.com's Pat Kirwan joins Jason Horowitz to preview this AFC West matchup. Watch the game at 4:05 PM ET on CBS. Also: don't forget to check out the Pregame: Chiefs-Raiders edition.

More details via Schefter's report: "They did guarantee $5 million of his $12.5 million salary next season, but nobody thought the Raiders would have parted ways with him when they surrendered two draft picks to the Bengals. Palmer is scheduled to make $12.5 million next season, $13 million in 2013 and $15 million in 2014. But Palmer will make $5 million less this season."

* Technically, the Raiders got Palmer for a 2012 first-round pick and a 2013 second-rounder that would become a first-rounder if Oakland makes the AFC title game this postseason.

Report: Carson Palmer took pay cut with Raiders

Palmer really earned his paycheck yesterday!  At least he first pointed blame at himself before he threw his team under the bus saying the defense has to play better.  Hmmmmm, how about not throwing 6 interceptions in one game guys?  Better bone up on theplaybook during the bye week Carson!

Everyone thought the Raiders were crazy for going with Gannon too. How did that work out. If the Raiders didn't trade anyway Gruden, they would have 4 rings not 3.

Sorry about that. The Raiders are 4-2, not 5-1. A Freudian slip

Listen, anyway you spin it, Carson Palmer is a Huge upgrade from Jason Campbell. I'm not trashing Campbell- he did exactly what we needed him to do. Manage the game and limit mistakes. He helped get us to a 5-1 record by doing just that. Carson Palmer brings veteran leadership as well as big play potential to our high speed offense. If we can protect him and McFadden keeps running like the stud he is, then we should be able to dominate. We have so many young, fast receivers and Palmer should be able to take shots downfield at will.

Washed up? He played for the god damn Bengals... Manning would have a hard time putting up decent numbers with that sad sack of a franchise. The guy is 31, which is prime time for a QB. So they traded away some picks, if they drafted a QB they would have paid him similar money for a kid who is a huge question mark. You know what you have with Palmer, and it's a top 15 (easily) NFL QB. The Raiders wanna win now, and Palmer gives them a much better shot at doing that than Campbell or anyone else they could have brought in. You say that he had some great WRs to throw to in Cincy... excuse me? How well has Ocho douchebag done since leaving the Bengals.... hmmm how about Housh? Is he still in the league? Palmer was a huge reason why those guys had some great years, dont be foolish. Do you guys even follow football?

Reportedly, the Oakland receivers  were very impressed by Palmer. They must think he's the real deal compared to what they have had..

Oakland gave up a 1st round pick next year and 2nd rounder in 2013?? For Carson Palmer? And didn't they also give up a draft pick for Terrell Pryor? One more question. When Matt Millen left Detroit did he take the job in Oakland? Sounds like his handiwork!!
I think that Carson Palmer is worth the risk for he is a best QB the Raiders have, Palmer will Improve raiders passing game. I doubt that he will play against Kansas City in 2 days,  It look like he make his first start against Denver on Nov. 6

Now for Matt Millen he don't work for the Raiders, currently only does color commentary on ESPN for college football.
