Gonzalez only behind Jerry Rice on all-time list

GonzalezPosted by Josh Katzowitz

During the week, Tony Gonzalez was interviewed by his son for a Sunday pregame show, and during the questioning, Nikko Gonzalez asked him his thoughts about the greatest tight end in history. Tony Gonzalez gave shout-outs to Kellen Winslow Sr., Mike Ditka and John Mackey, but in the end, Gonzalez said he thought he was the best tight end in history.

Statistically, it’s tough to dispute him.

After catching four passes for 52 yards as the Falcons took an 11-point lead into the halftime of the game against the Lions, Gonzalez has passed No. 3 Cris Carter and No. 2 Marvin Harrison as the second-leading pass-catcher of all time.

He’s currently at 1,103 catches. That’s 446 catches behind Jerry Rice but better than anybody else in history. So yeah, it wouldn’t be incorrect to say that Gonzalez is the best tight end ever.

Anyone and i mean Anyone who tries to dispute that TG isnt the best Te of all time is clearly blind.  Many chargers fans will try and bring up Gates and his TD numbers which i agree are amazing. But to be fair he has had Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers, 2 exceptional Qbs for most of his career.  Gonzo had  Rich Gannon, Elvis Grbac,Trent Green ( who played well in kc) , Damon Huard, Brody Croyle and tyler thigpen. Call me nuts ill take Rivers and Brees.  The Guy was consistent year in and out and played in a time were it wasnt as wide open his entire career. And the fact Gonzalez faced double teams non stop due to KC never having any good Wideouts in his time here. He lead the chiefs in Recieving 7 times as a TE.  His best wideouts playing along side him were Andre Rison his rookie year then Derrick Alexander and Eddie Kennison. While good players not exactly superstars to take the heat off him. So take away the average qbs outside of a few years from Green and never playing with great wideouts and being the focus of every teams defense and still putting up the numbers he did? The guy is 2nd all time in NFL History in Receptions and he is a TE. Enough said!!

As a Chiefs fan, I know what the Falcons got.  This guy is a SPECIAL player.  I never got a chance to see Kellen Winslow Sr., but I did see Shannon Sharpe(too many times).  And Tony Gonzalez is better than Sharpe.  It's not close.  I miss him wearing Chiefs red, Marty was right when he said Gonzalez was special.  People can say what they want about gates, but he will never DREAM to be what Tony was, and is now.  If you were to create the perfect tight end, you would create Tony Gonzalez.

if i had to pick one id still take a healthty Antonio Gates over Gonzalez.

great player and great individual.

I am so happy that this deal was made. Getting a game-changer at tight end for 2nd round pick is huge, even if he only plays this year or next year ends up being his last.

Easily the best to ever play his position.  What is kinda lost in the receiving stats is how good of a blocker he is.
