What's wrong with Chris Johnson? Not him, he says

C. Johnson has struggled this year so far (US Presswire).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

You know what’s worse than the fact that Titans running back Chris Johnson had another subpar outing, rushing for just 18 yards on 10 carries in Tennessee’s 41-7 loss to the Texans? You know what’s worse than the fact he has accumulated just 268 yards with a 2.9 yards per carry average on the season after signing his mammoth four-year, $53.5 million ($30 million guaranteed) contract?

The fact that Johnson refuses to take accountability for any of it.

“Basically, if you are watching the game and you really can’t tell what is going on with the run game then I would say you really don’t know football,’’ Johnson said, via the Tennessean. “I wouldn’t say I am the issue. I am very confident I have been doing the things … I do.”

Which means he seems to be trashing the people who are blocking for him, although his offensive line defended him and his fullback said Johnson wasn’t wrong (of course, what else are they going to say?).

“He is still the same player, he doesn’t change overnight,’’ fullback Ahmard Hall said. “He’s 24 years old -- you don’t just lose it like that. If he doesn’t have any space to run, he can’t do what he does. We have to give him space.

“He is going to catch the brunt of it because he held out and people are accustomed to him breaking the long run, but it is not him. He may miss a read every now and then, but we have to do a better job of blocking for him.” analyst
Andy Benoit had a different idea a couple weeks ago when he wrote, “Johnson has not shown his usual initial quickness or burst out of the backfield. He’s had a tendency to stop his feet at the first sign of trouble, which is why he’s not creating his own space. These issues were apparent even in his 101-yard performance against the Browns.”

While the combination of backups Javon Ringer and Jamie Harper are also combining to average 2.9 yards per carry, giving credence to the opinion that the offensive line isn’t helping its running backs, Johnson is simply not performing at a high level. Though he had a worse year than expected last year (yes, 1,364 yards, I realize, is pretty awesome, but his 4.3 average was way down from 2009, when he rushed for 2,006 yards with a 5.6 average), he’s fallen off the cliff this season.

Could it have something to do with his training camp holdout? His average of 308.3 carries per season his first three years in the league? The fact he’s still not on the same page as his offense? The possibility, as some have said, that he’s shying away from contact? Nope, he says. It’s not on him.

“I feel like I’ve been back,’’ Johnson said. “I can’t say that that’s the problem with the running game.”

Maybe not, but at this point, it’s tough not to feel awfully disappointed in the way he’s performed this season.

He may not be the ONLY problem, but he's for damn sure a big part of it.  He didn't have anything to do with the defense giving up 41 pts...or Arian Foster having a career day running and receiving.  But he definitely is lacking in the passion and hard work department.  He has that, HA! I got my money, look going on.  Regardless if he missed training camp and pre-season, if you plan on playing you should be doing whatever is necessary to stay in shape and be ready for when you do get to play.  It makes me sick to see spoiled athletes whine and cry for so much money to play a game they supposedly love.  Give me half of league minimum and I would be the happiest man on the planet to just even be on the sidelines.  I hope he's able to get it going, the Titans need him bad.  Go Titans!

CJ must have been hanging out with Bernard "I've been open for four years" Berrian this off-season. Funny how when players do well it's all them, but when they're bad, it's someone elses fault. Funnier though is the people who have argued that CJ is better than AP. When has AP had a line like Johnson enjoyed in his only good years?

It's amazing how  you coach warriors  bash football holdouts when the scandalous ass owners. They are the real crooks who don't have to pay you a dime if they cut you cause they found someone cheaper or feel you're too old. We never have anything to say about those cheap bastards. The closest you guys ever came to the field is probably cheerleading. Holding out is the only way you can ensure that guaranteed money. His line sucks and the coach admits it by saying changing out guys on the o-line could make it worse. Give CJ a break regardless of contract. He can't do it alone.

I'm glad this idiot didn't get hurt in college.  There is no way he would have graduated.  It makes me physically sick to know that some ghetto fabulous punk makes more money than I will ever see and takes it for granted.  I hope he.................

just proves like most people outside of titan country have been saying, he is just fast not good and certainly not elite.  peterson is elite johnson is just a punk who was aloud to get to the corner to often.  defenses can learned now he will be deligated to being a backup till he learns to run by running over and juking not just speed.  ask the raiders if speed is all you need.

This guy has always been a D-Bag. If it's not your fault that you suck right now, then you weren't the reason you were so great last year. The Titans have had a great O line most of the last four or five years, perhaps they are underacheiving this year, but the self proclaimed "best offensive player in the NFL" should be able to at least be mediocre without great line play.

Ringer and Harper dont make 10 or 12 million a year. More effort is expected out of you Johnson. You seem to lack effort and vision. Perhaps while the others were in camp doing what they agreed to do in their contract, you were sitting at home humping your Johnson. Rumor has it that will make you go blind.  But when you cant stand on your own merits..... throw your team mates under the bus. Try running over an opponent before rolling over on your team mates. Ahmard is trying to be a good team mate, take a lesson in humility and just say what everyone knows and that is you are half assing it.
