Although losing to the Panthers was a big-time bummer for the Redskins on Sunday, the news got much worse on Monday.

We wrote Sunday night that the Redskins medical team believed running back Tim Hightower tore his ACL on Sunday, and Monday afternoon, coach Mike Shanahan confirmed the tear and that Hightower was lost for the season.

Without Hightower, who rushed for 321 yards and a touchdown on 84 carries this year, the Redskins now will rely on Ryan Torain and Roy Helu to take the bulk of the rushing attempts.

Shanahan also said receiver Santana Moss would miss five to seven weeks after undergoing surgery on his broken hand, and he said Rex Grossman, who's been stricken with pneumonia, will stay in the hospital for the next 48 hours.

"Our goal is to get John Beck's supporting cast playing at a very high level,” Shanahan said.

I guess that's what happens when you talk Super Bowl after a couple weeks into the season...  same with Grossman who is on the bench now.  Although, I do like their confidence and bravado, but maybe it's something that shouldn't be said out loud (in the media). Karma is a biznatch. Loved Hightower when he was in AZ - hoping for a healthier year next year.

For any NFL team to lose it's starting RB and No. 1 WR in the same game would be crippling, but this is why Shanahan believes in the RB-by-committee approach to lessen the blow to the overall picture. Injuries are a given, but I don't think the season is over for DC, it's still early and not one team in the NFC east has distinguished itself above the others. The O was already trying to adjust to a QB change, now Beck will be throwing to a few second-team guys he's been practicing with all season. The problem for the Skins for the past 2 games has been turnovers by Grossman, and he is on the bench, and the D has been exposed. Same problem for nearly every team at some point this season. Just wish our bye week would've been later than week 5.

Apparently you slept through this past off season when the Redskins basically did what you describe.  Everyone got giddy here in DC after a good pre-season and a couple of early season wins but the reality is this mess was years in the making and it will take years to clean up.  They did a nice job (for the first time in years) with this year's draft.  Now they need about 3 more drafts like that, and then maybe we can start to get excited.  Though he would never admit it, Shanahan more or less wrote off this season when he (wisely) decided not to waste any money on a QB until some of the other needs were addressed.

Well, we drafted Roy Helu and Evan Royster as guys for the future, now is their chance to shine. The Skins weren't destined for a SB run and these injuries while unfortunate, is a chance to build depth and experience in our young rookies for next year and beyond.

NFL needs the Skins to be good again? You could equate this statement with..." What the NHL needs is for Columbus to put a winning team on the ice." Or, "What the NBA needs is a good outcome in Oklahoma City" Let's try another " Baseball won't survive another year if the Cubs don't win it all next year." The NFL doesn't need any one team. Period. The collection of all the teams and the popularity of the sport is what makes it so successful. Nobody cares about the Redskins nationally, so stop thinking they do. Maybe Mark Rypien-sic will come out of retirement for you guys. Here's to Helu tearing it up in fantasy.

skins had themselves a nice little run to begin the year, but there pretty much done now. highttower was playing well, and leave the rush attack up to torain, who's constantly injured, and roy helu...eh. john beck isn't a starting qb in the nfl, rex grossman should still be taking the snaps. i see about 6 wins this year from the skins, shanny cant coach without elway and davis behind center. best of luck

The season is all but done.  Why not take a shot at TO for the season even if its for no more than keeping people in their seats.
