Patriots place Dowling on IR; DBs get weaker

The big news on Friday came when the Patriots surprisingly waived Leigh Bodden. The speculation behind the transaction was that Bodden might have gotten old very quickly or that the coaches wanted to try out some younger players in the  secondary – which contributes mightily to the team placing 32nd in the NFL in defense – or that he simply wasn’t a good fit on the squad.

With the loss of Bodden, it was assumed oft-injured rookie Ras-I Dowling would receive some playing time, but the Patriots had another surprise for us Saturday by announcing that they had placed Dowling on the IR list, ending his season.

Dowling had missed much of training camp with a hamstring injury, and lately, he’s been dealing with a hip injury. As ESPN Boston points out, the Dowling move leaves Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Antwaun Molden and Phillip Adams at cornerback for New England. Already plagued with the worst pass defense in the league, it’s hard to fathom that quartet improving the team enough to get the defense out of the basement of the league.

Which makes the move to waive Bodden just kind of strange. The entire last two days of Patriots transactions has been, well, a head-scratcher.

Or as the Boston Herald put it, “It is amazing, I must say, to release Leigh Bodden, then place Ras-I Dowling on IR the next day. Very confusing.”

UPDATED (5:11 p.m. ET): The Boston Herald reports Dowling's injury is a torn tendon in his leg -- which caused the pain in his hip. No surgery is needed, but he'd need four weeks to heal and then another few to get back in football shape before returning. That's why New England decided to end his season now.

I'm sure N.E.already will have a cheating strategy when they beat Pittsburgh like a rented mule today.

Sounds like they expect to know what the opposing offense is going to do before they do it somehow?  These mediocre players suddenly becoming pro-bowlers.. too familiar of a thing to be happenstance.   Some other way to cheat.. because that's the only way they win anything.

Remeber Lawyer Milloy and Ty Lh better aw. How would they be replaced in the secondary? It worked out ok without them, but the did have a much better front seven back then. The front seven the Patriots have now is nowhere near as good as that one. It is all on the offense now. If the defense can keep oppopsing teams from running at will Tom Brady and company will be able to win a lot of games ion this league where there is no teams that are without some major weaknesses. The Steelers will be a good test.

I doubt Bill had much say in the decision to cut Bodden. It's money related coming from ownership. Patriots have a history of cutting or trading higher paid veterans regardless of the situation. Remember Randy Moss, Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel, Tully Banta Cain, Adalius Thomas. They don't seam to care about making personnel decisions that make the team better, especially lately. They just somehow manage to fill in the gap without skipping a beat, but the talent level is definately exposed in the playoffs.

After getting a large contract, his performance severely dip. But it was sure a quick decision on Belichick's part rather than wait for him to heal from his injury first and if he still plays lousy like he did against the Bills i too would kicked him out. I think he trust this year's draft pick of I-Dowling will pay off for them along with Arrington and McCourty who are both playing well compared to Bodden. So let see if they play better without him against the Steeler's youg WR core, i think the Steelers should not be to complacent though as i think they are motivated to play better when usually the head coach trust them to play and put them in a position to prove their worth.
