It doesn't take much effort to find fans and players of other teams who loathe the Jets. This is what happens to successful franchises, particularly ones who have a head coach that loves the sound of his own voice, usually when there's a microphone nearby. But even former Jets have taken a critical eye to the franchise, and perhaps none more outspoken than Joe Namath.

He called out the team after their loss to the Raiders earlier this season, and suggested that maybe Ryan hasn't done such a good job of preparing the Jets to play. Ryan, of course, had a response.

"I'm not gonna change who I am because Joe Namath said something," he said a few weeks ago. "Joe Namath can come in here, and if he can still throw, we'll have him as a backup quarterback. He doesn't know our team. He's on the outside. … he's not in these meetings. I think if he was he'd be shocked at the preparation.”

Well, the gloves -- and the shirts -- are off. During the Jets' bye week, Rex made a trip to the mall (!) and he donned a No. 12 Jets jersey for the occasion.

Namath, who wore No. 12 during his playing days, appeared on ESPN's 1050 with Michael Kay and quipped: "I'm just stunned that the jersey with No. 12 come in that size."

At least we think it was a joke. Maybe Namath was serious. Either way, according to ESPN New York, Ryan joked that "nothing has hurt more" than Namath's crack about Ryan's man boobs and waistline.

"Hey it doesn't matter," Ryan said when asked about wearing the jersey. "I'm still a huge Joe Namath fan." He then added: "Any fan or any Jets alum is welcome to their opinion. It doesn’t mean I have to like it or agree with it."

If Ryan's taking requests, for his next trick we'd like to see him squeeze into a Sam Bradford jersey.

We'd pay to see Ryan try on Bradford's No. 8. (US PRESSWIRE)

Who cares about the Jets? I know most New Yorkers do, but what about fans of ther NFL teams? I can tell you I'm getting very tired of hearing about the Jets. THEY SUCK! A team that picks up an old terd coming out of jail, then we have to hear about it everyday for a month on ESPN. As for Ryan's mouth; he needs to shut up and focus on winning. Both Ryan brothers are loosers becuase they spend too much time flepping thier jaws and begging for publicity. Who have you beat this year? You're weak, your divison is weak. As for Nameth; he's a weirdo and he doesn't deserve national coverage. I don't get creeped out too often but when he tried to kiss that anchorwoman I was like what the hell is this person doing, very uncomfratable. Go ahead Jets' fan tell me I'm wrong but I could go the rest of my life without the Jets, the Ryans or Burress and be as happy as a pig in sh1t.

Rex should make a foot video with Suzy Kolber.
Nice Canesfins420!!!

Rex Ryan should wear an AA hat for his next press conference, but I doubt Namath would be smart enough figure it out.
Now that was classic Yardog59.  LMAO because Joe would not get it.

I have to give Rex Ryan props for taking the high road especially since Joe Namath is probably the worst quarterback to ever be part of winning a Super Bowl.

Ravens won 12 games last year. Ravens will go to playoffs for the 4 th straight year this year. Flacco is not awesome by far...Sanchez does suck..I agree. If Jets had a better QB the would be better.

The problem is probably less Rex Ryan and more Mark Sanchez.  It's hard to win with a shitty QB these days.  Sanchez might be the worst QB in the league.  His team is loaded with talent yet he goes out there and shits the bed most of the time.  Rookie QBs with a lot less talent around them, like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Ponder etc. all out perform him.

Joe Flacco is terrible too.  If the Jets or Ravens had capable QBs they'd probably have won 12+ games in a season by now and possibly won a championship in the last few years.

If the Jets come up short again this year you have to look at getting rid of Ryan. His mouth definitely hurts his team. For a team that hasn't won anything for a really long time he talks like they are the best team in the league. To make matters worse, he has no respect for anybody.

This article, as non-eventful as it is, loses all credibility with the second setence.... "This is what happens to successful franchises,..."

Jets are a successful franchise??  You kidding me?  Guess Ryan Wilson's of successful is far different than mine.  Steelers, yes.  Pats, sadly yes.  Packers, yes.  49ers, Cowboys?  Sadly yes.  Jets????  Wow.
