Raiders sign Houshmandzadeh to join Palmer

HoushmandzadehPosted by Josh Katzowitz

It looks like Cincinnati West has added another member. After hiring former Bengals receivers coach Hue Jackson this past offseason and then signing Carson Palmer as the future starting quarterback a few weeks ago, Oakland has announced the team has added former Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Will Brinson wrote Monday that this was a distinct possibility, considering Jackson admitted to reporters that the team would work out Houshmandzadeh to see if he had anything left.

With Palmer in Cincinnati, Houshmandzadeh was one of the premier slot receivers in the game, becoming a consistent third-down pass-catcher who wasn’t afraid to make a reception across the middle of the field.

But after leaving the Bengals, Houshmandzadeh hasn’t been nearly as effective. He caught 79 passes for 911 yards in Seattle in 2009, but he created enough problems with the front office that the Seahawks excommunicated him from the team after one season. He played with the Ravens last year, but he was mostly irrelevant (30 catches, 398 yards), except for his complaining.

Like Palmer, though, he’s probably hoping the magical waters of Hue Jackson can revitalize a career that seemingly has stalled out by joining his former quarterback on the new Cincinnati West squad. Next up on the Raiders docket: sign former Bengals Rudi Johnson, Willie Anderson and Dhani Jones.

Did the Raiders give up their 2015 1st round pick for TJ. This team is getting worse by the week. Its sad to see them bring in these two over-the-hill,disgruntled, EX BENGALS!!!, to help out this young improving team. The Raiders have just gone 5 years backwards !!!
Dude, you don't have a clue, Over the Hill? far from that. Disgruntled? wouldn't you be playing in Cincy with all the drama and head cases.  They have Improved At QB. Palmer is a better QB than Campbell. Adding a Vet WR like TJ gives the locker room some leadership and he will help out these WR's. The Raiders will show the improvement on the field. this will be a lot better team than you saw against KC.

As a Steelers fan and can't stand the Bengals but I have to agree with your assesment.  I live in Louisville so we get a lot of news about the antics of Ocho and the late Chris Henry but never heard anything bad about T.J.

Ya, good luck the rest of the season. You have one win from a winning team. Chalk that up to any given Sunday. Are the Raiders the greatest team ever? No, not in a long shot. But they are on the uprise and just got better with Palmer. They already have other receivers other than TJ. If TJ contributes, great. But my feeling is that you will have 2 #1 draft picks from the Raiders, pretty far down the line. SD and KC have had soft schedules to this point. And if you saw the Monday night game, both teams are not playing all that great.  Sure, the Raiders got bet by KC a couple of Sundays ago. The Raiders were pretty beat up and the qbs were rusty.  I expect them to bounce back pretty well this coming Sunday. They get to feast on the Tebow express.

These aren't the Raiders of the past 8 years. But you can dream on if you like.

I Love It!  Cincy's first round pick from Oakland is going to come earlier and earlier in the round the more guys they pluck off the street.  it's just too bad Oakland already had 4 wins before the trade.  but it's so obvious they aren't going any where.  2013 draft pick will be a second rounder, there's no way Oakland will ever reach the AFC title game either year.  Cincy's best scenario is a terrible Oakland finish this year, and whatever happens next year happens, it's still going to be a second rounder.  Still looks good for Cincy to get a top 10 in next years draft, Palmer will lead them nowhere and T.J. is done.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Raiders tanking it in that division.  The Broncos suck, the Chiefs and Chargers are no better than Oakland.  The Raiders could end up winning this terrible division.  Looking at their schedule, the only sure loss is the Packers game.  Split with SD, win against Denver again, beat Miami, beat Detroit at home (Detroit is better than they were, but outdoors on the road in December, have to say the odds are with Oakland, and you are looking at 8-8, and that is without a win that you are not supposed to get that every team seems to get).  At best you get a pick around #18 this season.  They have the best RB in the game, a veteran QB, some very nice WRs...TJ is nothing but a complement.  If they were looking at him as their #1, then they might be in trouble.  But he will be their #3 guy.  He is a possible upgrade over what they have already.  If they were serious about contending they could also be looking to bring back Moss (I would say that he would be a potential late season addition if they look poised to make a playoff run...he wants to go to a winner if he comes back, and Oakland has the cap space to squeeze him in short term, and of the potential playoff teams out there, only the Giants need more help at WR than Oakland, and I don't think Coughlin takes a Moss or TO, and most likely, with this 5-week stretch in their schedule coming up, they are out of the playoff hunt by December 1 anyway).

Remembering the T.J. of old...

I'm a Bengals fan, and while I acknowledge that TJ has been a problem child during his Seattle and Baltimore stints, I don't remember him ever hein a whiner or complainer when he played for the Bengals.  In fact, I remember the exact opposite being true- that he was a model citizen, model player, and a leader on the team.  Any Bengals fans out there have the same memories as me, or was I just viewing him with rose-colored glasses?  Maybe his issues were just always dwarfed by Ocho's?

Don't be fooled by TJ, yes he was(maybe still is) a good slot receiver, but he's a whiner and always thought of himself as a #1 receiver. He can help this Raiders team if he has anything left...hopefully he's matured and will keep his mouth shut and just play ball.

This I agree with you on, who's to say one of those undrafted "college kids" wouldn't be the next Jerry Rice? I mean Jerry wasn't picked till like the fourth round, but still today is considered the best WR in the game. I'm still on the fence on the Palmer acquisition and this Sunday is the test as well as later on during the San Diego game on Thursday.  Two big division games that are definitely winable for the Raiders. I just hope they paid TJ minimal and only to a one year stint, if he pans out then definitely keep him around.  But once he starts complaining time to ship him off, this is a young and impressional team and doesn't need "drama Queens".
