Ex-Bucs QB King: Gruden 'is inherently dishonest'

Keyshawn Johnson had some interesting things to say about Jon Gruden, a fellow employee at ESPN and his former coach, when he recently ripped the environment in Tampa Bay.

On Tuesday, former Buccaneers quarterback and current radio host Shaun King said on WQYK-AM 1010 (via JoeBucsFan.com) expounded on some of that talk, ripping Gruden pretty thoroughly.

"Jon has a major character flaw in that if he's not the center of attention, it's a problem," King said. "It is what it is. Ala the 'Chucky face.' You look at the NFL Films, it's just ironic, anytime that he's mic'd up or filmed, the 'Chucky face,' you know, it's showcased a lot more than normal."

King went on to say that Gruden "wasn't a guy that a lot of his players were endeared to" and that the coach-turned-broadcaster "is inherently dishonest."

That's a lot of mud that just got slung Gruden's way, but if anyone has actual knowledge of Gruden's behavior with the Buccaneers, it's King, who led the team to an NFC Championship Game.

That being said, you could pretty easily argue that all of mankind is "inherently dishonest" and that none of the traits that King described will keep Gruden, who recently signed a five-year extension with Monday Night Football, from being a popular name rumored as a candidate for open coaching positions around the NFL.

OK, how about some examples Mr. King? I remember King playing and he kinda sucked so really not taking much from him. Who can forget Keyshawn and "Give me the Dam ball" he was a GREAT teamate. Actually he was an overhyped turd. As far as announcers go I think this crew is probably the best since Howie & Don. Come on, Dennis Miller? Al Michaels, he killed me. How about we respond with the announcers we can't stand the most. I am going with a tie between that fat punter from Buffalo (forgot his name) and Al I never played anything in my life Michaels. Not sure if that punter ever made it to MNF but I have scene him on Nationally televised games. Let's not forget Madden. He came out of the gate terrific but him BOOM and drawing on the screen while we missed 2 plays got old. He also talked such crap and made so many uncorrected errors (ALA Baseballs Joe Morgan) that I think they asked him to retire.

My favorite truthful Grudenism this week was "This Matt Cassell is a winner!" Hilarious.

Shaun King? Who cares , Burger King has more credibility.

I for one like Gruden on MNF, hell of a lot better then at least 80% of the color guys currently employed. All I ask of my color guys is to be pasionate about football and be opinionated. Guys that take the company line are the guys I cannot listen to. Calling guys out when they blow a call (like the Revis call earlier brought up) is a refreshing change from the dribble we get out of most of these guys imo.

Gruden wasn't even the coach when "King led the Bucs to the 1999 NFC championship game.  Gruden coached them to the Super Bowl championship 3 years later in his 1st season with the Bucs and Brad Johnson was the starting qb.  King couldn't get the job done, so he blames his coach.

Yes, Gruden is unwatchable. I can't listen to a game he is working. He just comes off as so pompous.

And yes, Chris Berman is a nightmare. Actually, most of the dudes who are on the air at espn, whether for the nfl or sportscenter, are such egomaniacs that I can't be bothered to watch.

Scott Van Pelt is a colossal jerk. Man, that guy clearly is in love with himself and couldn't be more annoying.

And that Josh schmuck whom I'm just say a clip of on Talk Soup over the weekend. Wow, what a total fool.
espn as a whole is total garbage. It is no longer about all sports, just the NBA & NFL. It also isn't even about sports very often, but largely just sensationalism of sports. I hate espn and hope it implodes someday soon.

The Buc's Defense led them to that championship game game. King could'nt get them past it. Sounds like sour grapes from this "never was"...

This guy needs a solid slap to the face, or he may just live out the rest of his life without second-guessing anything he thinks or says and being a pompous egomaniac
The love from the five year deal should only make him even worse.  I hope someone makes him an offer he cannot refuse to go back to coaching.  Well anyone but my Bears of course.

There is some demographic, probably the same backa$$ward one that likes Chris Berman, that loves this guy and wants him on MNF.  I hope to never meet those people.

Of course he is dishonest.  He is a former NFL coach and a current talking head and god awful announcer.  I am not defending Chuckie in any way, I would love to see him and Jaws gone so I could finally watch MNF with the volume on, but how is this news?

Before anyone even thinks about saying that Shaun King just wants his name in the paper...why does everyone whose played for him agree that he's a jerk? Still not enough? Listen to this guy on MNF. He comes up with some of the most ridiculous things, and then starts getting all smug, talking like it's an established fact that he's right just upon being Jon Gruden. Never even offers a counterargument, just talks definitively: "Well, there's no question that was a pass interference by Darelle Revis. The question here is why did he get away with it?" This guy needs a solid slap to the face, or he may just live out the rest of his life without second-guessing anything he thinks or says and being a pompous egomaniac
