Manning's progress slow, manages to zing Simms

ManningPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Peyton Manning gave a surprise interview to the local press Thursday, and the conclusion to draw from the briefing is that the progress with his neck seems a little stagnated. Which obviously isn’t highly positive. And considering his neck still hasn’t fused, progress is going slowly for the Colts MVP (this year and every year, apparently).

"Not a whole lot to report,” he told reporters, including the Indianapolis Star. “Still waiting for the fusion to take place. That takes place, they thought, between two and three months. Still going slow with that.

“I still have some of the same issues I had before the fusion as far as the nerves and the regeneration. Still dealing with that, the idea being that this surgery gave me the most stability for the nerves to regenerate. That’s still a process there.”

Manning said there really isn’t a timeline to his recovery. Instead, it’s more like a series of checkpoints, the next of which occurs Dec. 1. That’s when he’ll be three months out of surgery, and doctors can determine his strength and conditioning. But for now, he can’t predict where he’ll be and when he’ll be there.

He does know this: he’d like to practice sometime this season.

“Well, the thing about it is the fact that I am on the active roster, if I were in a position, if I were cleared to practice and if I were at a strength level, conditioning level checkpoint that I were cleared, it’s the greatest venue to go out and see where you are on the practice field as opposed to having to grab a receiver off to the side and go out before walk-through or before practice,” he said. “If I was cleared and able to do that, it would be nice to be able to do that, to go out and participate in a team practice where everything is right there with you, even though you probably couldn’t do everything. So, that’s a hope and a wish.”

But as far as playing this year? You’ve got to think there’s absolutely no chance of it happening.

Manning’s sense of humor, though, is still there. You might recall that CBS/Showtime analyst Phil Simms said recently that Andrew Luck didn’t have an NFL arm. Naturally, reporters asked Manning about that, since the Colts, assuming they have the No. 1 draft pick next year, could take him as Manning’s eventual replacement.

“Yeah, I don’t talk to Phil. Phil doesn’t talk to me,” Manning said. “He did text me after that, saying ‘Hey, sorry to drag your name into this.’ I wrote back, ‘Phil I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ He said, ‘Well on my show, Inside the NFL, I made this statement.’ I said, ‘Phil, I hate to break it to you, but I don’t watch your show, along with a lot of other people that I don’t think watch that show.’ Giving himself a little more credit than probably was merited.”

Ouch.

Manning's progress slow, manages to zing Simms

Wouldn't it be ironic if this is really the end of Manning's career and he ends up in the tv booth in a couple years?  Some of the young QBs today will be saying the same thing about Manning.  I can imagine Cam Newton saying "I don't text Peyton and we don't talk".

Simms and Manning are both highly successful and competitive SOBs.  They are both qualified to evaluate talent.  Simms gets paid to make these statements.  It's his job.

Luck hasn't done anything in the NFL yet so nobody knows how good he will really be.  Let's stop annointing him already.  Look what happened the last time people started annointing the next chosen one.  That would be the highly overrated Tebow who can't hit the side of a barn in the NFL despite being one of the greatest and most accomplished college players ever.

Phil was a pretty good QB back in his day........however his assessment of college QB's and how they will fair in the NFL is a bit lacking in any merit.  Andres Luck looks to be the best QB prospect coming into a draft since John Elway.  Elway had a stronger arm, but he had a stronger arm then anyone ever did.  To add to Simms lack of credibility, I do not recall him pointing the glaring lack of talent Chris Simms brought the NFL and yet the young Simms was given a shot with more than one team.  I am not a betting man, but I would put the house on Luck being a star over Chris Simms any time.

And what is this show Simms is referring too?  I, much like Peyton have never heard of it or seen it.  Even if I knew it existed, there is no way I could listen to that blowhard for any amount of time.

I think Phil also said his sons would be quality pros.  He missed the boat on that prediction too.

Hey Phil, Andrew Luck can make every throw. Lets see, he can throw the deep out, a 60 yard bomb, and I've seen him throw a 20 yard dart. Just what throw can't he make. All you former players are the same, "they can't do this, and they can't do that". I can understand why Peyton doesn't watch you, you're ignorant!

These "no championships since Spygate" comments are ridiculous.

I agree, the reason the Pats haven't won any championships since spygate is because Brady doesn't have a great defense to carry him anymore :)

Phil Simms is as much a pathetic commentator as he was a pathetic quarterback. God he makes me sick. His ego is way beyond his talents. Peyton hit the nail on the head.

I agree, he's so pathetic that the Bills couldn't even beat Phil Simms' backup :)

Please explain any class the Patriots exude!! You cannot hide the fact that they have NOT won anything since Spygate. Next!! You are biased and an idiot. Great year Red Sox. New England has the most arrogant clueless fans in the sports arena. I like it when the gay boy Ben Affleck refers to the Red Sox as 'WE'.....you New Englanders suck and always will. Cheat much, Bill? The proof? Yeah its in the pudding. Nice game against the Steelers over the weekend Tom.

Still hurting from losing the last two games to the Pats huh Cowboy fan ??? Hate to break it to you, but Dallas hasn't won anything since Spygate either. In fact, the same can be said of all but 4 NFL teams.

These "no championships since Spygate" comments are ridiculous. Only ONE team can win it all per year. And the Patriots are a combined 58-17 in all regular and postseason games. Seems like the video cameras didn't really matter. Yet, all the haters only want to point to no championships. As I said, 27 other teams can say the same thing since Spygate. And sddhvksdv, why are you downing Tom and the Pats, when the Eagles ran the 'Boys out of Philly the same night ??

Phil Simms was.a terrific qb and he's a great analyst, anyone knocking his work at either job doesn't know what they are watching.
