Chad Eaton played eight NFL seasons from 1996 to 2004, including five with the New England Patriots. On Thursday, the Dayton Daily News published a feature on Eaton, who now coaches at Central State University, a historically black college in Wilberforce, Ohio.

It's a wide-ranging piece that covers much of Eaton's professional life as a player and coach, but the part that caught our attention was his time with Bill Belichick. Drafted in the seventh round in 1995 by the Cardinals, Eaton was cut twice before landing on the Browns' practice squad. Belichick was the coach, and he took a liking to Eaton because of his hard-nosed style.

“If practice was going slow, he’d look at me and just say, ‘It’s time,’” Eaton told the Daily News. “He wanted me to get on somebody’s (case) and start a little fight. I was known for that and it paid off on Fridays. There’d always be some extra money in my locker. Practice players don’t make much, so I really appreciated it.”

Coaches instigating fights among players is nothing new. Jets head coach Rex Ryan admitted to as much during prior to the 2010 season on HBO's "Hard Knocks."

ESPN New York's Rich Cimini recounts the incident.

"Ryan was so concerned by [former first-round pick Vernon Gholston's] lack of fire that he actually assigned backup center Rob Turner -- the Jets' version of a hockey goon -- to pick a fight with Gholston in practice. It's a macho thing; the objective is to see if Gholston is man enough to respond. Ryan apparently liked the outcome because he used an off-color, coming-of-age description to compliment Gholston to his coaches."

The difference? Turner didn't find any "extra money" in his locker afterwards.

PFT.com's Mike Florio writes that "Giving extra cash to players raises the specter of potential salary-cap violations."

We suppose, but it still seems like a stretch.

Either way, the strategy backfired. After going 11-5 and leading the Browns to the playoffs in 1994, Belichick's '95 team went 5-11. Then-owner Art Modell promptly announced the team was relocating to Baltimore and, oh, yeah, Belichick was fired.

The Boston Globe's Chad Finn unearthed another example of Belichick paying a player to mix it up during practice. In 2000, then with the Pats, Belichick gave practice squad offensive lineman Rob Gatrell $200 "to go after (safety) Lawyer Milloy… Milloy was chosen because he's considered the most emotional, toughest, and meanest player on the defense. Milloy responded just as Belichick hoped, going after Gatrell and creating a massive brawl that involved up to 30 players - offensive vs. defensive. Smaller fights ensued throughout practice."

You'd have to really be up against the salary cap for what amounts to NFL lunch money to be a violation.

Belichick was asked about Eaton's comments Friday.

"I don't remember that," he said, according to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard.

Works for us.

Your argument is, since they were already a good team and obviously didn't need to cheat, then it doesn't really matter whether they actually cheated or not. On what planet does that argument make sense?

Not at all what I said or what I meant.  My argument speaks against idiots that say the Pats wouldn't have won as many games or championships if they didn't "cheat".   All I'm saying is they proved the cheating didn't contribute to their winning when they won out the rest of the season before losing a close game in the superbowl.... that's all.

Did they screw up? Sure they did.... but they got penalized for it, let it go is all I'm saying.

1. I never claimed that the Patriots needed to cheat or that they wouldn't have won the Super Bowl without taping the Rams' walk-thru. But your argument doesn't minimize the advantages gained by cheating nor does it exonerate the Pats from doing it.

2.  My main beef isn't with the Belichick or even the Patriots; doubtless there have been other NFL teams doing the same things. My beef is with Roger Goodell and the national sports media who together puled off one of the biggest cover-ups in team sports history. Destroyed evidence? No verification of the contents of the tapes? Biggest league penalty in history over something that Goodell argues wasn't really that big of a deal in terms of competitive advantage? On a BS scale of 1-to-10, that registers a 15.

P.S. Not all Americans hate Canada. I love Canada and am exploring the possibility of retiring in British Columbia or Ontario.

1 OUT OF 12,    5 OUT OF 15   AND 27 TOTAL

TIGERS 1 OUT OF 40

Way to ignore the rest of my post that proves you're a racist and loser.

None of your above numbers matter except for the 1 out of 12, nobody gives a crap what happened more then 10 years ago.  Heck, 90 percent of people don't give a crap what happened 2 or 3 years ago.

I think the Braves during their run did just as well as your Yankees did...... but wait, they're the Braves so that couldn't be possible according to you.

Goodnight "bri bri".  Some of us have to work in the morning.

What are you talking about.I am not a Racist at all I have all different kinds of people working for me.Why is it
that you always have to lie to try and prove you are right.

On multiple occasions you insult Canada on these boards, anybody that insults another country and especially a U.S neighbour and ally is a racist..... end of story.  That's not opinion, that's a fact.  Nothing will convince me you insult an entire country that happens to be in North America but that you aren't racist.  If you have such a problem with a country in North America so similar to the U.S in so many ways, I can't even imagine what you say about other countries and races...

I was a loud mouth and I did call people names but I dont anymore, but you have been calling people names for
years now.

You don't have to call people names to be insulting.... you're good at doing it in every other way.  First you insult me for not complimenting the Yankees or even insulting the Yankees.  Your logic? They are a great organization you said.... so then when I defend the Pats, a great NFL franchise you smash me for defending the Pats.   You tell me the Tigers suck because they haven't made the playoffs enough times but in another thread you tell everybody the Braves organization sucks because they ONLY made the playoffs but couldn't the big series many times.  Yet it's ok the Yankees make it almost every year but win 1 out of 12...

Get lost jerkoff....

My point was to prove that you are a LIAR.And I said I dont think spygate had alot to do with the Pats success
but you can not IGNORE that it happened and they CHEATED.

And I am hurting really????Unlike you I have a life,These chat boards are your life. You could be the biggest IDIOT
in here every writes 1 or 2 paragraphs you write 10 and you are not even a US citizen, dont they have rooms for
CANADIANS.

I have been busy signing new contracts for my company,I have Jets season tickets and they are in the playoff
race, and unlike the teams you root for my teams actually are winning.

And I told you you are too stupid and angey to get a BLOG because that is your life goal.so please stop
boring the COMMUNITY with all you long winded useless blabber

Honestly, you are nothing but a loser and internet tough guy.  I've never seen or met or heard of a bigger loser then you.

You say you have a life?  BAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Thanks for the laugh.  You're a welfare bum who only stopped posting as much during the day when people on CBS started questioning how busy you could possibly be running a company with 30 or 40 employees when you're online all day long.  I for one work for myself from a home office and I'm on a computer all day long..... I work for a living.  All you do is leach off the tax payers of your country.

You do NOT have season tickets to the Yankees or the Jets or any other sporting event. You can't even afford ONE ticket let alone season tickets.   You posted on CBS about 30 minutes after a playoff game against the Tigers forgetting we would know you couldn't have been at Yankee stadium if you posted that quickly.   You were caught lying... as usual....

And you are obsessed with the word "blog".  You use it all the time and constantly tell me I want one.. it's hilarious.  The only person that wishes he had a blog is you, except for one problem.  You can hardly type, you can't spell and your vocabulary is comparable with my 11 year old little boy..... scratch that.  He's smarter then you.... my bad.

The "community" you mentioned here on CBS hates your guts.  Every thread you go to there's somebody telling you off, calling you names, etc   Why?  Because you are a loser sir.....  a waste of a life.
