Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

Amazingly, it could be worse for Tim Tebow(Getty Images)

Posted by Ryan Wilson

The Broncos' Tim Tebow will face the Oakland Raiders in the Black Hole Sunday. Not ideal circumstances for a young quarterback coming off a horrific performance last week. In fact, depending on how he plays, this could be the 2010 first-round pick's last chance at a starting gig this season. First-year coach John Fox, who inherited Tebow from Josh McDaniels, doesn't seem particularly thrilled with any of his options at quarterback, and more than anything, he sounds tired of answering questions about Tebow.

“The goofy thing is, it’s almost like if he doesn’t have success it will be anybody’s fault but his. It’s almost that kind of polarizing thing,” Fox told the Los Angeles Times' Sam Farmer last week. “They’ll say it could be his supporting cast, or the type of plays. At the end of the day, we are what we are. We’re doing everything we can to win, and we’re finding out about a young quarterback, good, bad or indifferent.”

This comes days after an anonymous Lions defender called Tebow "embarrassing" and "a joke." But not everybody thinks the former Heisman winner is a sideshow and a pushover.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson, the man who gave up a first- and (likely) a second-round pick for Carson Palmer, isn't taking Tebow lightly.

“He came in here last year and played really well, and I expect he’ll come here again with the same thought,” he said, via the Oakland Tribune. “The guy has talent. I’ve never questioned that. He can throw. He can run. And he’s on the opposing team, so we have to do everything that we can to get him under control.”

Raiders defensive end Jarvis Moss was also asked about Tebow, his former teammate at Florida.

"He’s a good athlete, man,” Moss said. “He’s a strong dude. He can definitely hurt you with his legs.”

The phrase "damning with faint praise" immediately comes to mind but Moss is right: Tebow isn't much of a passer, despite that being a big part of the job description. But former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, who now works for NFL Network, made this comparison on Sunday's NFL GameDay Morning: Eli Manning vs. Tebow through their first five NFL games.

Wins-Losses: Manning, 0-5; Tebow, 2-3
Completion percentage: Manning, 44.4; Tebow, 48.3
Passing yards per game: Manning, 126.4; Tebow, 196.8
TD-INT ratio: Manning, 3-7; Tebow, 7-4
Passer rating: Manning, 44.8; Tebow 74.8

So there's your silver lining, Broncos fans. Of course, Denver has other issues -- the offensive line and defense chief among them.

Either way, Warner says not to panic. "I think the verdict is yet to be determined (on Tebow), I think everybody needs to relax," he said.

Warren Sapp, Warner's NFL Network colleague, couldn't help but ask: "Were those really Eli's numbers?"

After a loss to the Lions last week, Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos look to rebound as they prepare to take on the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Jason Horowitz and NFL.com's Pat Kirwan preview this matchup, Watch the game at 4:05 PM ET on CBS.

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

@DAM5968
"So if Tebow is really that good then I guess since the Lions totally kick the tar out of him and the Broncos, they must be headed to the superbowl!!"

So by your analogy the rams must be going to the SB cuz they just beat the Saints.

No you cant take one game make arbitrary statments like the one you made. Jesus what is wrong with you guys.  its not like this is the first time a young qb has played his first 5 games.

If TT should be run out of the game, then why not colt McCoy or sam bradfor or Cam newton for that matter.  did any of those guys go 3-3 in their first 6 starts, let me help you out, NO.

the article didnt say TT was great or even good, i see you are reading challenged so let me help you out.  it said at the same point as TT is at Eli was worse.  thats all it said. get a grip.  its a FACT that TT has done better in his first 6 games than Elway, Montana, bradshaw, Aikman, either manning, steve young.  he has done better than any of those guys did in their first 6 games.

it doesnt mean that you are stupid, it doesnt mean if you accept that that you will somehow cease to exist. but facts and records dont lie. forever until the end of time TT will have had a better start to his career than any of those guys, it is what it is.  accept it.

Whether or not his career ends as good as any of those guys has yet to be determined.  and no matter how much you want it to turn out bad, the FACT is none of us know how it will turn out.  it might end 3 games from now after another blowout, he might go on to have a great career.

chill out with all the shreiking  and foot stomping about how bad he is.

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

i think you and the people like you are the ones that refuse to see the facts. refuse to look at the stats.  refuse to look at the results.

just click this link -   and read it, or have someone read it to you.

its a FACT that tebow in his first 5 games has had a better start than Elway, either manning, bradshaw, rodgers, steve young, aikman, favre, montana.  its a FACT that he has had a better start to his career than any of those guys did.

No one has said TT is better than any of those qb's, or that TT is going to have a better career than any of those guys, but its a FACT that he started off THROWING the ball better than any of those guys did.  Why is it so hard to look at the facts and accept that?

in his first 6 starts he is 3-3, with the same team, im sorry minus a pro bowl wr, as kyle orton he has gone 3-3 or .500 how did orton do with the same team, im sorry plus a pro bowl wr, 4-15.  those are FACTS, not my opinion.

I havent gone out of my way to prove anything random.  I have proven some very specific things and it didnt take much at all, no going out of my way here.  i had to read an online article and verify some FACTS.

If anyone has been shrieking and spewing nonsense based on nothing but his own opinion its YOU. Can you back up anything that you have said with anything that resembles a FACT?

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

At this point in the NFL Tebow is not anywhere close to Eli Manning's skill. This comparison is pointless and groundless.

@zeus1980...Seriously, man, you gotta learn to read past the headline - though it seems you are struggling with just comprehending that. The comparison made is the first five games of each players' careers. And Tebow's stats are superior to Manning's. No one is looking at how they play now.

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

At this point in the NFL Tebow is not anywhere close to Eli Manning's skill. This comparison is pointless and groundless. For one they are completely different styles of Qb. Tebow is a run first pass second type and Eli is a pocket passer. Eli has also proven that the larger the stage of game he plays the better he plays. His numbers are are very good compared to the history of the NFL. Hes a Superbowl MVP with multiple 4k passing yard seasons. The only thing that Tebow has is he can run the ball and in the NFL is a recipe for failure. These run first QB only have a good history of not being able to suceed (ie) Mick Vick. Vick is a great Athelete but can't win when it matters,in the playoffs or superbowl. Tebow has beat some bad teams but can't,and won't be able to get wins against the better teams in this league. All you have to do is look at the superbowl winning teams and see who their QB was.

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

Eli Manning is a pretty inconsistent quarterback.  He looks great at times, horrible at times, but over most of his career he is usually just "okay"
or "above average." That being said, it is an insult for Manning to be compared at any point of his career to Tebow (and actually downgraded no less).

Really?  How is that an insult?  I would say it is more of an insult to Tebow than Eli for the comparision.  After all, Eli was the cry baby who threw a temper tantrum if SD drafted and kept him.  Just as was the case with Eli, Tebow needs more time to develop before he can be considered a bust or a good QB.  The same goes with almost all QB's.  Rodgers wasnt' great at all for his first few games.  Rivers has a ugly awkward throwing motion. Time will tell if Tebow will be able to fix enough or adjust enough, but time is what should be granted to him.

Would the Giants have made it to the SB to face the Pats, or beat the Pats, if they gave up on Manning earlier in his career?  The same way everyone wants to give up on Timmy?

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

I wish he was available in my fantasy league.  Tebow is way better than Flacco, all of the Redskins, Dolphins, Seattle QB's combined.  Don't let me forget Painter, the moron in Jacksonville.  Matt Schaub got me a big fat whopping 8 points today!  Tebow is a viable option every week.  I love watching him bust linebackers, safetys and corners up.  Tough guy and all heart.  Can't say that about most of the wusses playing his position today!  He's a throw back before QB's started wearing dresses.

Good news: Tebow better than Eli to start career

Maybe Tebow is going to be better than all you "Football Whiz Kids" thinks he will be.  After 8 starts he hasn't been spectacular for 4 quarters but neither were any of the others QB's before him.  The only guy I remember lighting it up from the jump was Marino.  Even Montana, Steve Young, Favre, Peyton and Rodgers were raw and looked really ugly.  Just call it what it is ...you hate the guy because he believes in God and lives his life as God wants him to!  Tebow is on a lousy team, he's just starting to build some chemistry with his team and receivers.  Talk about this in 2 years "if" he gets some help.  For now shut up and let the kid play and learn.  We will all find out eventually!

And as if almost "on cue" @ticker52 opened up an account here on CBS just to write a ridiculous comment that only reinforces the vomit inducing drivel and narrow-mindedness of the Tebow cult.

Thank you for proving my previous commentary.

The fact people are going out of their way to provide every random possible options and examples for Tebow to be considered successful is simply outlandish - and yet these same "fans" respond with astonishment when they determine other fans and especially other players choose to react accordingly.  Here's a hint: if you constantly brag about and/or make excuses for something so it can be considered good or even great, especially when its not, don't be surprised when someone else eventually learns to disdain that entity and responds in kind.

Say whatever "opinion" you want about Tebow, good or bad, but you can't say with a factual basis he is even a legitimate NFL quarterback.  His footwork, his delivery, his inability to read a defense and even his stats are proof otherwise.  Additionally, he should never have been a 1st round draft pick.  And if you want to "blame" someone for these facts, don't fault the "Tebow haters", blame Urban Meyer for keeping a kid for four years and yet never teaching him how to be a next-level quarterback.  A guarantee I'm sure he made when he recruited him.
