Antonio Gates gets ripped for being 'old and fat'

The Chargers are struggling, obviously. At 4-4 after their loss to Green Bay, though, they're still in a position to win the AFC West, although figuring out exactly what is bothering quarterback Philip Rivers would probably be nice.

On Monday morning, Yahoo Sports Mike Silver pegged the blame on someone else -- Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. Silver argues that other general managers wouldn't grab much talent off San Diego's roster, and that includes tight end Antonio Gates, who was called "old and fat" by Silver's team source.

"It’s harsh to say, but he looks old and fat," the source told Silver about Gates. "He’s not beating people. We don’t have any speed, we’re soft on defense, and we put so much on our quarterback. When he was playing great, we could kind of get away with it. Now he’s not playing very well, and it’s all falling apart."

This is supposed to be an indictment (I think) of Smith's ability to construct a roster, but obviously it comes off as quite insulting to Gates. And it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, honestly.

Week 9 Review

Gates is older, at the age of 31. And he is slower, considering that he's dealing with plantar fascitis. Has he gained weight? Well maybe, but whatever, he's still been pretty productive thus far this season, catching 25 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns.

At that pace, Gates will catch 772 passing yards over the course of the season. Just four tight ends since the merger have caught more than 775 passing yards in a season after turning 31. Tony Gonzalez did it three times, Shannon Sharpe did it twice and Mickey Shuler and Wesley Walls each did it once.

None of those guys played less than 15 games, either. Which is a nice way of saying that while the Chargers might be in trouble when it comes to their current roster construction, the quality of Gates play isn't the issue.

OKayyyy....I am just a little confused when you say losing weight helped LT to get stronger and faster
You need to learn how to read. I did not say losing weight helped Ladainian Tomlinson get stronger and faster.  LT said he lost weight and got stronger.  LT's production went up his first year with the Jets.  He did not become the best in the game like he once was but you could see the improvement in his bursts and cuts.

Yes Antonio Gates is one of the best tightends playing right now and he is dealing with injury. To me he looks over weight.  Even with the foot injury he could be doing things to cut down some of that weight around his waist. He is still productive and one of the best even with the injury but I think if he drops some weight he will dominate.

Nice comment TwistedMoFo. I got a good laugh. 5 stars

Their are so many other players in the NFL you could tab as fat and slow. Gates is not one of them he happens to be in the top 3 tight ends alond with the foot injury that is more of a problem then his weight. let me say if you had that plan-tier wart on your foot you would lose a step or two.

Who cares about the Chargers?  We all knew this team was going no where when they fired Marty Schottenheimer and hired Norv Turner.  AJ Smith has destroyed a team that could have had at least 1 Super Bowl by now.     The owner of the Chargers has gotten what they deserve.

NBA Lockout must be hard on these kids.  I failed to realize that OJ Mayo has jumped into the NFL and was playing with the Pats?!?  Wonder if we'll see more, now that the lockout seems headed to the cancellation of the full season.Surprised

STUPID.  THE FOLLOWING CHARGERS WOULD START ON 80% OF THE TEAMS IN THE NFL.  A HEALTHY GATES, RIVERS, VINCENT JACKSON, TAKEO SPIKES, ANTONIO GARAY, QUINTON JAMMER, SHAWN PHILLIPS, A HEALTHY KAEDING, SCIFRIES,  KRIS DIEHLMAN, MARCUS MCNEAL.  ON 50% OF THE TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE - TOLBERT, RYAN MATHEWS, WEDDLE, CASON.  THE QUESTION IS, WHO ON NEW ENGLAND WOULD START FOR SAN DIEGO?  I WILL TELL YOU - BRADY, WELKER, LOGAN MANKINS, MCCORTEY, OJ MAYO, MAYBE MAYBE WILFORK.  THAT'S IT!  BUT SD HAS NO TALENT.  SD HAS NO COACH!  MOVE BELICHEAT TO SD AND NEXT YEAR THEY GO TO THE SUPERBOWL!

Who is this source?  The Colts or Dolphins GM?  Most teams would raid the Charger's talent if they got even half a chance.  V-Jack had no shortage of interested teams, the Lord of no Rings just wouldn't trade him.  The Chargers let go of a lot of talent that seems to do just great elsewhere, such as Brees, LT2 and Cromartie, who are all winning games for playoff contenders.

Right now teams would take V-Jack, Mathews and Gates easily.  If the Chargers were to cut any of those 3 they'd be on a new team that day.  I don't watch enough of their games to know most of their players, but Rivers does suck.

Of course the dude is out of shape.. The only treatment for his injury is total and complete rest and non-use of his foot, which makes cardio a little tricky! And he is probably playing through immense pain which is naturally going to slow him down...

I would still take an "old and fat" Gates over most other TE's at 100%....

OKayyyy....I am just a little confused when you say losing weight helped LT to get stronger and faster..You say if gates followed it would be same outcome and hell dominate....But My question is Has LT really dominated since becoming a Jet? I mean he gives more veteran speaches now but WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?? Gates has gained wt. because hes been injured. Injuries down on the feet can delay any training your planning on. And the hatred comments come out after his best game of the season??....don't forget Charges almost won. Take away 1 of the 2 back to back int.s in the 1st and hmmmm....But Im still seeing Gates is a fantasy start this week vs oakland on most websites. THIS TEAM NEEDS DISCIPLINE for penalties in the locker room!!   But Ive been a charger fan since birth and well never change so idk........Are the Chargers getting beat or beating themselves?

Agreed. Can't keep into great shape because of the foot injury, but can't heal the foot right because he isn't in great shape. Gates isn't the teams biggest problem. Something is wrong and they just don't seem to scare people anymore. The defense doesn't apply any pressure which leaves the secondary to just run around for as long as they can to try and keep up which never works out very well.
