DeSean Jackson misses meeting, won't play Sunday

DeSean Jackson has had a rough year. He’s been clamoring for a contract extension for the past two years, and he’s not playing well in the ultra-important final year of his deal (he’s making just $600,000). Earlier this year, Terrell Owens, not necessarily a guy you want to take advice from when dealing with money situations, said Jackson should sit out games in protest.

Today, Jackson won’t have a choice in the matter.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Jackson completely missed a team meeting Saturday, and the team has told him he won’t be active for today’s game vs. the Cardinals.

It’s a season that has quickly turned into a nightmare for Jackson – who, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter missed the Saturday morning special teams meeting because his alarm didn’t go off and he overslept.

Jackson has been outspoken about wanting a new deal, and though the Eagles have said in the past that he deserves a new contract, he didn’t get one last year because of complications with the expiring CBA. Even though there’s a new agreement, that doesn’t mean he’s on the verge of getting a new deal right now.

Especially since he’s been rendered irrelevant for much of the season, making 29 receptions for 503 yards and two touchdowns while dropping passes and losing his ability as a deep threat.

“The defenses are trying to take away what we do best,” Jackson said this week. “We’ve got to be able to figure it out. Myself, at times, it’s frustrating, because I am used to making the big plays, scoring long touchdowns, things like that, but right now, it’s not really working. Defenses are not letting it happen. We’ve just got to figure it out.”

The acrimony between Jackson and the Eagles isn’t new. He raised eyebrows earlier this year when he said his health was his most important priority while winning games for the Eagles was No. 2*. Basically, he was saying he didn’t want to hurt himself only to lose out on his potential for a big new contract.

*Jackson isn’t the only player in the NFL who feels this way, but for him to verbalize it was a little surprising and probably not very business savvy.

And now, he’s becoming a bigger problem for the Eagles, who still have plenty of talent on offense but now have to deal with the fact their No. 1 receiver can’t bother to wake up for team meetings.

DeSean Jackson misses meeting, won't play Sunday

"%nbsp" refers to "non-breaking space" - it's a piece of text coding that directs the browser to insert a space without making a line break at that point. For some reason a lot of browsers have issues rendering it correctly when it is used in HTML, so instead of a space, you see the characters "%nbsp." It's completely annoying. It shows up a lot when people copy text from one place and paste it to another on the web.

Also, Eagles suck. Go Lions!

Ahh thanks very much. I keep seeing and assumed that since I am older and out of touch that it was some new  abbreviation like lol. I racked my brain and came up with nothing that made sense. Now I feel a bit better. Thanks again.

I do not understand the media's love affair with Andy Reid.  Why isn't he being held more accountable? Jackson is simply another selfish player whose seems not to be in Andy's offensive plan coz he is reluctant to go over the middle.. And, DeSean, defenses are NOT trying to take away what you do best..they ARE taking it away. And all y'all who play the 'careers can end on a single play' card..  "..this is the business we have chosen..." Hyman Roth     &

I absolutely agree its the career they have chosen. Was just pointing out that is part of the business that is being a pro athlete and that holdouts and the other seemingly greedy acts are also part of the business. Now to make myself look silly I need to ask a question. What is NBSP? I keep seeing it and have no clue. I will probably find out and do the forehead slap but you cant find out if ya dont ask.

$40,000 for 40 years = $1.6 million

Average yearly NFL salary > $1.6 million

That's his point... More money for a game...

Totally unnderstand thats his point. My point is that NFL players work every bit as hard as other people and alot harder than some. Their careers can end in just one play and their contracts for the most part are not guranteed. They entertain millions of people and are in an industry where there is billions of dollars to be spread around. So why not get theirs while they can? Also, yes technically its more money for a game. However if you really think it is just a game you are crazy.

Last thing. If you or I or some teacher was good enough to play in the NFL we would take the same roads (salary wise) that they do. That includes sitting out and getting paid. I wish it did not have to be like that but it is. We the fans are as guilty as the owners and players for the huge salaries and all since we pay for the tickets, jersies, concessions and cable/internet bills to support our sports habits.

So a mediocre WR and good PR missed a practice and thinks he is better than everyone else?  He really needs to fire his agent and beg for forgiveness ASAP.

Jackson is nobody. At best, a mini-TO... without the great career.

Jackson is a dope...  His act will wear thin with his teammates if it hasn't already.  That is one of my favorite things about football.  One bad apple in the locker room spoils the whole bunch.  Owens, Moss, Ochostinko anyone???

I would be surprised if Reid keeps him next year.  He's already been down the attitude road.

WR's are replaceable.  If not, hell, it's the dream team.  Let Vince Young get out there and catch passes and earn some of his salary, which I am sure is nore then Jackson's anyway.

This is Andy Reid`s show not the inmates and we all know coach is a genius. Funny on a day people won`t shut up about Tebow only throwing 8 passes and being a running QB, things look very similar for the Eagles.....only they lost to the lousy Cardinals.  WHat not enough multi million $ CB`s(3) to cover Fitz???  This team is SOOOO Overrated. No playoffs big Andy ship is sinkin fast.
