Casino fires Franco Harris for supporting Paterno

Earlier this week, Steelers legend and Penn State alum Franco Harris came out and publicly ripped the Penn State Board of Trustees for firing Joe Paterno.

The decision to do so got Harris fired, as the Meadows Race Track and Casino decided to dump the Hall of Famer as an endorser.

"In light of the recent developments with Franco Harris regarding Joe Paterno’s dismissal, Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time, while these matters are looked into further," the Meadows said in a statement.

It's a surprising turn of events, especially considering that this is, you know, a casino. It's not exactly the home of the moral high ground. Still, it seems that they probably recognized Harris Q-rating would take a hit.

More on Penn State scandal

"Now, everyone gets to interpret in their own way," Harris said recently. "That's what really bothers me: Joe did what was right for him to do. He forwarded the information to his superiors. That's the legal procedure at Penn State."

According to a story posted Wednesday on WTAE.com, Harris' friends warned him that speaking out in support of Paterno would leave him susceptible to criticism from potential sponsors, but Harris said he was unconcerned.

WTAE's Sally Wiggin reports that Harris will meet with Penn State University President Rodney Erickson and the Board of Trustees.

"I really want to get some answers," Harris said. "How do you justify the firing of Joe Paterno? And I want to know from the president, why aren't you rehiring Joe Paterno?"

Harris might be legally right to defend Paterno. We won't know that until the full legal proceedings in this matter are finished. But if Paterno could have stopped the terrible things that allegedly happened at Penn State from happening, there's really no moral ground to stand on.

Even the people who run a casino can see that.

tcp63, you make a valid point, but it doesn't really apply to this story. Didn't you read where it said a lot of this stuff occurred on the PSU campus, including in the shower in the football team's locker room? But hey, nevermind.......just continue to blame the victims here.

DMR, I come from a broken home and in middle school i worked for the high school football coach. when my mom found out what i was doing she told me i was not allowed to go anywhere with the coach that was not at the school or with the football team. this all took place in the 70's before this shit happened every where. why because my mom was involved and did not allow me with strangers, so yes i do ask where were the parents.

@scbull0303....You`re welcome :)

And that`s my point. After beating Sandusky to a pulp, take the rape victim the the hospital. They HAVE to report it.And i`m pretty sure all doctors aren`t as sick as other people concerning the importance of a football game.Because from what i`ve been reading, this is going to get a LOT sicker as the truth comes out.And the people that enabled and covered for Sandusky are  just starting to emerge.I just read about a DA that passed on this one years ago due to "reasons".Ok,fair enough, but what "reasons" can he possibly give for not making sure the case went forward, in his own office, even if he`s not the one in charge ? Not important enough for you to keep an eye on ? Or just don`t want any trouble for dear ol` Penn State and Paterno
This one`s going to stink worse than a rotten onion, and have at least as many layers that will eventually be peeled back.Never thought i`d hear myself say it,but this is one time i will REALLY be rooting for the trial lawyers to nail each and every person that knew about this and let the rapes continue.
The only (good?) thing about this is that the enablers aren`t QUITE as powerful as the Cathoilic church. They`re powerful, but i`m PRETTY sure the American people will want this resolved. And the State, college and law officials can`t run off to Vatican City for immunity.Thank god

wish all you people against Joe Paterno would lose your jobs because of something your boss didn't do.

cover up a child sex scandal? hangin on to those false heros and idols i see. good boy. now bark.

Oh, yeah, and try to remember the phrase "moral obligation" when you go to the voting booths next election.

yes. don't vote for either banskter whore puppet. about time people do that. too bad you are just pissed off about a football program and that's what is making you say this.

If you vote any of the jokers who are in office now back in, then your BS about "moral obligation" from a college football coach is just hypocrisy.

what makes Romney any better? ever see his major donors? my my they sure look like the same mega corps and bankers that bought Obama in 2008. amazing.

or how about Newt... 1.8 million from Freddie/Fannie? no room to complain about this latest fake ass bubble burst if you are on the take from Fannie and Freddie.

they are all crooks. only <1% of the politicians are it seems.

don't let your over emotional state for a goofy old football coach and a once proud football team cloud the fact that children... little boys were being raped by the defensive coordinator DURING AND AFTER his tenure.

when you make excuses for this crap... and you defend a man that KNEW what was going on and was TOLD what was going on and is supposed to be a LEADER to the youth on his team ir makes you sound very very pathetic.

sure would like to know what a football play from 1972 has anything to do with this story? With regards to what franco is doing i applaud him for standing up for his college coach,i don't agree with his stance and that is ok too, most important thing right now is to get all the facts straight before we hang anyone in the public's eye
