Ray Lewis: Ray Rice needs more touches for Ravens

Over the past few days, we've pointed out that the Ravens would be wise to get the ball in the hands of their best player more often. That player is Ray Rice. When the Ravens win, he gets an average of 18-plus carries. When they lose, it's about eight carries.

On Tuesday, John Harbaugh refuted the claim that there's a connection between Rice's carries and the losses, but everyone's not in agreement with him on that. Specifically, Ray Lewis, who, according to our Ravens Rapid Reporter Jason Butt, believes that Rice needs more touches if the Ravens want to win.

"That's our bell cow," Lewis said. "If that talent right there isn't touching 25-30 times then you have to question yourself, what are we actually doing balance-wise?"

This isn't the first time a Ravens defender has spoken out about Rice's touches -- after the loss to Jacksonville in Week 7, Terrell Suggs basically told's Pete Prisco the exact same thing.

"I don't really know what the game plan was," Suggs said at the time. "When I have a Pro Bowl running back, and he's not getting his touches, I'm going to feel some kind of way about it. He wants the ball. And I think we should feed him. Ray Rice is a phenomenal player. You have to use your phenomenal players."

Over the next few days, everyone started pointing fingers everywhere, even though the obvious solution was, in almost everyone's opinion, to give Rice more touches.

And yet, three weeks later, he got less touches in another game against another mediocre team in another non-blowout. The Ravens have the talent to win the Super Bowl this year, but if they're not utilizing it to properly beat the teams they should beat, they might not even make the playoffs.

Sonic John whines: "Serial Killer Really? Do you even have the slightest idea WHAT a serial killer is?"

Yes Johnny I do know what a serial killer is. It is someone who has killed multiple people. Someone like say...Ray Lewis perhaps.

awfully hypocritical for a "locker room" guy "like" ray the "guy with blood on his shirt in the limo fleeing the scene" lewis to call out ANYONE on his team in the papers... the rest of this is just mastery of the obvious.

Ray Lewis: Ray Rice needs more touches for Ravens

Both Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs know a thing or two about football.  The future hall of famers have this exactly right, Ray Rice is the answer to more victories!  Feeding him the ball is only going to help the Ravens win more games.

I'm not at all impressed with Cam Cameron's offense.  He starts out the last game with two excellently designed ends-around, but he hasn't done anything to get Ray Rice out in space.  Sometimes it seems like he's experimenting and wants to get a body of evidence on a set of plays even if they aren't working.  Additionally, it's amazing how Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Seatle can find ways to cover the Ravens set of talented receivers like a blanket, then are made to look foolish by other teams.  Something's not right with the coaching fitting the plays to the players.

It reminds me of when Brian Billick brought in former head coach and personal friend Jim Fassel as OC and the Ravens offense did nothing.  Then Billick fired Fassel and called the offensive plays himself and the Ravens were in the top third of the NFL in offense for the last half of the year.

It's funny, because Harbaugh knows they (the players) are wrong, but can't just blurt the answer because the REAL answer is far worse than something as simple as "Ray Rice isn't getting enough touches."...  If Harbaugh didn't have a filter, it would sound like: "Look, Williams has done just fine with his touches, the reason we're not a dominant team is because Flacco is complete Garbage!"

Seattle's run D is stout.

If you take away the Ravens game where we ran a total of 12 times for 75 yds Seattle's run D is giving up 110 ypg. That would rank them at 14th best in the NFL, hardly a stout run D.

12 rushes 75 yds = 6.25 ypc

Hell if we ran it at that pace 20 times that would be 125 yds.

I could understand trying to limit his touches in a blow out win, or try to keep them lower against bad teams to keep him fresh, but 5?  I sometimes wonder if the NFL is scripted like wrestling, because it seems like Balt has the best all around team in the AFC yet they do as little as possible with the talent.  Getting beat this past week and by Jacksonville defies reason or logic.  Oh well, still plenty of games left to try and figure out who is the team to beat in the AFC.  Certainly looks like NE is trying to stake that claim after sweeping the Jets, but it seems to change every week.  Get your bets in on GB now...

For those of you not close to the Ravens this is not earth shattering news.  The fans in Baltimore have questioned Cam Cameron as an offensive coordinator for a long time and most think he's a total buffoon.  Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows you simply utilize your best weapon at all times and the Ravens have failed to do that on 3 occasions this year. Is it ironic that those 3 occasions all resulted in losses to teams the Ravens should have beaten?  John Harbaugh either needs to wake up and get rid of Cameron or suffer the consequences of losing his own job because of Cameron's ineptitude.  Give the damn ball to Ray Rice and run, run, run!!
