Ray Lewis: Ray Rice needs more touches for Ravens

Over the past few days, we've pointed out that the Ravens would be wise to get the ball in the hands of their best player more often. That player is Ray Rice. When the Ravens win, he gets an average of 18-plus carries. When they lose, it's about eight carries.

On Tuesday, John Harbaugh refuted the claim that there's a connection between Rice's carries and the losses, but everyone's not in agreement with him on that. Specifically, Ray Lewis, who, according to our Ravens Rapid Reporter Jason Butt, believes that Rice needs more touches if the Ravens want to win.

"That's our bell cow," Lewis said. "If that talent right there isn't touching 25-30 times then you have to question yourself, what are we actually doing balance-wise?"

This isn't the first time a Ravens defender has spoken out about Rice's touches -- after the loss to Jacksonville in Week 7, Terrell Suggs basically told's Pete Prisco the exact same thing.

"I don't really know what the game plan was," Suggs said at the time. "When I have a Pro Bowl running back, and he's not getting his touches, I'm going to feel some kind of way about it. He wants the ball. And I think we should feed him. Ray Rice is a phenomenal player. You have to use your phenomenal players."

Over the next few days, everyone started pointing fingers everywhere, even though the obvious solution was, in almost everyone's opinion, to give Rice more touches.

And yet, three weeks later, he got less touches in another game against another mediocre team in another non-blowout. The Ravens have the talent to win the Super Bowl this year, but if they're not utilizing it to properly beat the teams they should beat, they might not even make the playoffs.

Ray Lewis: Ray Rice needs more touches for Ravens

i think its all coaching! bucktooth flacco goes out and drives the baltimore convicts down and wins the game late against my steelers! i hear no one praise him for that! they loose the next week to seatle and the give rice the ball more stuff comes back up. every part of this team wants to win. every part wants to succeed. i dont think they know how to do it together! thats coaching! balance! flacco is better than just being sent out there to manage the game. your skill players are pretty good. there are just to many alpha males there! to many big mouths! and they dont know how to work together. thats coaching. i view the baltimore ravens like i view convicts on parole! a bunch of guys who want something that someone else has. they are a bunch of bullies! suggs and lewis are the ring leaders with reed being the bag man or something! gangsta gangsta! the oakland raiders of the east!  you will never win 6 superbowls or be in 8 of them! your the original Cleveland browns! the mistake by the lake! your only super bowl win came against a quarterback who is a drunk! an alcoholic! he was most likely drunk then! your whole organization is a farce! like watching prison system football! jealousy turned to hatred of my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers!

Dallas had just put 160+ on Seahawks run D so it woluld have been wise to follow.
Any team that runs a pro bowl back less than 10 times has OC losing his mind.

Mike Martz is not that crazy. Even NE, NO and Colts with Peyton run more on anyone.

I think Harbaugh trusts too much in Flacco. I think that trust is due to him wanting Flacco to prove his critics wrong. Aint gonna happen. All i gotta say is, when Ray Lewis talks, you listen.

There is no defense for 5 carries.  Besides, he was averaging 5+ yds in those carries.  Every team that has made a point of running the ball 20+ times has beaten Seattle and they just gave up 150 yds the previous week.  Plus every time Rice gets the ball the Ravens win.  All of their losses are in games they didn't run Rice.  It's not a hard formula, don't know why the coaching staff can't figure it out.

I agree that Rice needs the ball more but in defense for the Seattle game, Seattle's run D is stout.

How could they not give him the ball more in Seattle?  He's a great of the best.  The more touches a star RB gets the better they get during a game.  I remember seeing something during the preseason from Harbaugh saying they would give Rice the ball as many times as he would take least I thought I did....I'll bet Ravens fans are pissed. I would be too.
