Bears coach Lovie Smith confirmed Monday that quarterback Jay Cutler has a fractured thumb.

Smith acknowledged in a radio interview that his starting quarterback suffered a fractured thumb on his throwing hand trying to make a tackle after an interception in the fourth quarter.

"Jay does have a right thumb fracture," Smith said on WBBM radio in Chicago. "He hurt it on the tackle, on the interception. Of course we took X-rays last night and he'll be seeing specialists this morning and we'll be able to tell you a little bit more after that."

The Bears said Cutler will have surgery to repair his fractured thumb and the team is hopeful he will return before the end of the regular season.

At any rate, the Bears are in serious trouble as Caleb Hanie will take over as the Bears starter, unless the Bears opt for the free agency route.

Their schedule over the next few weeks is reasonably easy, with Oakland, Kansas City, Denver and Seattle on the horizon, but losing Cutler for an extended period of time is clearly a season-changing issue.

I think the Bears could easily go 2-4 as well as 4-2. They have trouble winning on the road (so beating GB is out). Denver has been on a roll and their defense and special teams are good enough to stop the Bears. Bears play the Vikings in a dome, which the Bears hate to do. Seattle is not a pushover, nor is Oakland. I think that Oakland will be the key game for the Bears, they have to win that game because the rest of the games (except KC) aren't as easy to win as people think.

Cutler needs to man up and put some damn duck tape on his thumb take a pain injection, and finish the season. :) Bret Favre did it...

2-4, really???  The Bears face a soft schedule, just look at the QBs the defense is going to play against - Palko, Tebow (who can't even be considered a QB), Jackson, and Ponder.  The defense will eat them alive.  Palmer is way overated- throws easy picks and is losing receivers due to injury. Then that leaves Rodgers who is a stud but the Bears match up well with.  Good defense, special teams play, and running the ball will get them in the playoffs.  4-2 easily, as long as Martz doesn't go pass happy.

There is a couple of tough games left. West coast trip to Oakland(lose) at Green Bay(lose) and you are going to get Tebowed in Denver(lose). K.C. looks like garbage(D played well for a quarter) Win  Minn= No Peterson (he could be back by then) Win   Seattle (not much to say there) Win   10-6 you may make the playoffs ( see T.B. last year) but go 2-4 and you're probably out

Do the Bear fans rememmber our last trip to the superbowl. Rex Grossman got hurt Kyle Orton a rookie stepped in. Have faith that the Bears will win 4 more games. We have a great D, Elite RB, tremendous special teams, an excellant FG kicker. Hanie did in fact throw 2 TDs in playoff game vs Packers.

Really a small problem for the Bears, Not that I love Caleb Hanie, but he has a pretty good arm and we saw him in the NFC championship game against the Packers. I don't think the Bears will open the entire playbook for Hanie, but with a good RB like Matt Fprte and the Bears defense, I don't think they will have any trouble making the playoffs. Sad for Jay Cutler, who has been playing very well lately.

After watching Palko play QB tonite I can see how you all think that the Bears would lose to this Bozo. After seeing the Patriots defense clown this missed talent in the draft, with their 32nd ranked defense, I can see how the Bears should be scared, I'm selling my playoff tickets.
