Tim Tebow's a shocking 4-1 as a starter this year and, as such, surely John Elway is getting warmed up to the idea of Tebow as his franchise quarterback, right?

Wrong. Elway, speaking to Gary Miller on his weekly radio show on 102.3 FM in Denver, was asked if he was "any closer to feeling if you have your quarterback on this team."

"No," Elway said after a pause, per The Denver Post. "I think obviously he's making progress week in and week out. When you look at our third down numbers, those have to improve.

"I mean, that's the bottom line. We can't go 3-for-13 and win a world championship. Those are the type of things we have to keep improving."

All of those things are correct, so it's hard to fault Elway for making those points. (Although is he just not reading Ryan Wilson's "Tracking Tebow" posts? Because Wilson's work proves Tebow is a winner.) And it's also hard to fault him for being honest.

But considering how much attention was paid to his excitement in the owners' box as Tebow marched down the field to beat the Jets on Thursday, well, shouldn't he figure out a way to either get behind Tebow or not?

Maybe he will -- Elway might be saying that the quarterback of the future in Denver isn't on the roster. Or maybe he's just implying he's not sure whether the quarterback of the future is on the roster yet. Which means Tim Tebow could be the quarterback of hte future, but Elway just hasn't decided yet.

Regardless, he's clearly not throwing his full managerial weight behind Tebow as the starter, despite Tebow continuing to find ways to win.

Depending on how the Broncos finish out, it should make for an entertaining (or is it exhausting?) offseason in Denver.

It is rather ironic in a way when one compares Tebow's collegiate career with that of Elway's collegiate career. Both set records during their tenure, Tebow won the Heisman, Elway lost the Heisman on the most watched college replay of the now famous Cal v. Stanford game called the "Play". Both men were the best of their generation in college. Elway's first year in the NFL back in 1983: 7 passing TD's 14 INT's and 1 rushing TD. The irony lies in a stement made back in 1983 by Robert Irsay owner of the Baltimore Colts who stated:"He'll never be any good." After trading newly drafted quarterback John Elway to the Denver Broncos. Its now 2011, and we have detractors saying the same thing about Tebow. If we look at the comparison between Tebow and Elway in their own respective first 5 games we see identical stats except in passing yards, Tebow 984, Elway 427, TD/INTs Tebow: 8/4, Elway 1/5 and rushing yards: Tebow 327, Elway 41. One can draw their own conclusion about Tebow whether you love or hate him he is here and he has all the skills to succeed.

Hey Elway, could you give the kid a break when things are going well? What President/GM has ever shown the least support to an athlete during good times such has this. There has been worse QB’s and teams in the history of sports that the GM even tries a little to protect their players. Could you take a minute to look at this roster Mr. Elway?, the team needs a quality franchise type RB, a franchise type WR, (you trade the best WR as soon as Tebow is named starting QB for a fifth to sixth round pick which is rarely a difference maker or stays on the roster for the entire year). V. Miller and Dumervil are studs but C. Bailey cannot continue to be a Pro Bowl corner forever. This team has considerable less offensive talent than J. Elway had throughout his entire Bronco Career. Yes, Tebow needs to improve his passing ability but this team with or without Tebow is a six win team at best talent wise.  This team is a minimum of 2 years (after this season) from now talent wise to be an elite team in the division/AFC. Even with a franchise QB this team is not much better than an 8 win team. What gets me is that Elway with the trade of Lloyd right off the bat he is not happy that the Broncos have had a good run this year with Tebow as his QB. After the season get a good QB coach or get your butt on the Practice field and work with Tebow and help him improve his QB skills and stop stabbing him in the back.

It also seems odd to me that if the defense is the same, why could Ortan (proper NFL qb) not win, and Tebow (poor NFL qb) somehow racks up w's. 
Look at the stats...the personnell may be largely the same on defense but they are not playing the same.  Since Tebow has beent he starter the defense has allowed only 21 points per game compared to 28 when Orton was still the starter AND if you take out the 45 point game against Detroit (the only loss since Tebow took over) that number falls to only 15.5 points per game--nearly two touchdowns less per game than Orton had to overcome.  Having to put up 29 points to win is obviously a lot different than having to put up only 16 (and Tebow has trouble doing that --last week a pick 6 by the defense allowed the 4th quarter drive to mean anything).

Maybe instead of publicly calling Tebow out again, and critiquing his play and 3rd down numbers, Elway should be getting ready to have an offseason HELPING Tebow throw the football? We all know that Tebow isn't the best Quarterback in the league, but has been putting on a special show the past few weeks. He clearly has the support of his team and the fans, so why not back him up yourself Elway. Work with the kid and teach him how to throw a football. I mean you are a Hall of Famer afterall! Take a little time to work with the kid and mentor him. Then you will have one special Quarterback, or you can continue to find reasons to not keep Tebow around and look like a chode in the process. Just saying

Well, after reading this post, I think it's safe to say you haven't watched nearly as much Tim Tebow as you claim to. If there is ANY time where I wouldn't mind having this guy as my quarterback, it's when he is playing from behind or running a 2 minute offense. The guy may not have a cannon for an arm, or have pin point accuracy, but he is as clutch as it gets. To do the things he did to tha Jets defense was amazing. While I am a fan of the kid, I must admit that his mechanics aren't the best and his accuracy is well below average. With that being said, it seems like everytime the 4th quarter comes around he steps his game up to another level. Since everybody is so big on statistics, using them every chance they get to knock Tebow, allow me to post up some stats that may open up some eyes around here.

*WARNING: THE STATS I AM ABOUT TO PRESENT ARE SHOCKING. PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU ARE AN EXTREME TEBOW HATER, BECAUSE THESE STATISTICS CAN BE BREATH TAKING!!!*

4th Quarter Statistics:
28-50 399 yards 5 Touchdowns 1 interception 107 QB Rating
23 Carries 172 yards 2 Touchdowns.

4th Quarter Statistics when within 7 points:
6-10 142 yards 1 Touchdown 0 Interceptions 137.5 QB Rating
11 Carries 84 yards 1 Touchdown


Sounds like a QB who can lead a franchise to me. If only he could bring that same type of play quarters 1-3.

I'm not trying to make it sound like the kid is the next big thing, but will people please stop ignoring what they are seeing? Sure, he is atrocious at times, but looking strictly at the 4th quarter production, I think it's safe to say that he has some type of potential in him. How many quarterbacks are great for 3 quarters and fall apart with the game on the line? This kid is the exact opposite of that. Is it possible that he may just be playing extremely nervous and afraid? That he's playing too conservative in the start of the game, which is holding him back? Is it possible that the guy is shining in the 4th quarters because it is the only time that he is allowed to let loose and do his thing?

I think it's time to take a few steps back and observe for a change. People are so quick to judge without a proper look at the player or team they are counting out. Let's not make this mistake on Tebow, he could be something great. Only time will tell.

Keep hatin' man, i'm sure someone will care what you have to say someday.  It also seems odd to me that if the defense is the same, why could Ortan (proper NFL qb) not win, and Tebow (poor NFL qb) somehow racks up w's.  I'm sure the haterade tastes too good to you though, so you'll probably just keep trashin. (For the record I'm not a Broncos, Gators, or even Tebow fan.)  True, no one can refute that his passing ability is quite lacking.  But just look at the only stat that matters, wins.

John Elway, is so smart. I love that honesty. Let's face it, you guys are arguing petty inaccuracies. TIM TEBOW is not an NFL quarterback. Have you seen him play? He is very hard to watch, and yeah yeah we hear you "BUT HE WINS GAMES!!". Actually his defense which, allow me to reiterate an early blog post, has allowed a grand average of 12.7 pts/game over Tebows magnificent run.

Case in the point the games are close. If this kid ever has to play from behind, or run a 2 minute drill with no timeouts and start from his own 20. What the hell is he gonna do? I thought maybe the critics were wrong, how could a heismen trophy winner be THAT bad/inaccurate of a passer. Then I watched, and I cringed.....

The kid is also hard to listen to. He gets invited to the broadcast both, to sit amounst three legends of the game in Irvin, Faulk and Sanders, and repeatedly answers serious questions with "We're blessed, this is a blessed group, we just keep working hard". It's one thing when Belichick and Brady repeat this "hard work" mantra because you actually see improvements in their game week in and week out, but when Tebow says it you say "Oh yeah I can definietly see how you're hard work is paying off, you got 3 completions this week Tim, good job man". I'll enjoy the veil of Tebow's magic while relevant, but you bible thumpers need to get a grip and realize this kid is NOT an NFL quarterback. If you're only now learning proper throwing mechanics and footwork, you're in a world of hurt.

John Elway has been around football a long, long time, not to mention his dad was a NCAA coach. I think he's right with his opinion and I know he says it meaning no slight to Tim Tebow. There is a proven recipe for a successful NFL QB, Tebow has some of those qualities but in many he lacks. I love watching this guy win but then again I also watched him play the Lions. Didn't love that so much. I have no doubt that Tebow can win games late in the 4th, I just question if he or the Broncos 'D' can keep it close with all the teams late into the 4th. I will enjoy this ride as long as it lasts and it certainly helps me forget the Jerk McDaniels project.
