Leinart confirms he might be done for season

M. Leinart might have broken his collarbone Sunday (AP).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

It appears that the Texans might have lost their second quarterback for the season in back-to-back games. Two weeks ago, it was Matt Schaub and a foot injury, and today, in Houston’s 20-13 win against the Jacksonville, backup Matt Leinart was knocked out of the game with a possible broken collarbone.

"I think there's probably a pretty strong possibility I won't be coming back this season,” Leinart told reporters afterward, indicating he had broken his left collarbone for the second time in his career.

Leinart had played decently in place of Schaub, going 10 of 13 for 57 yards and a touchdown. But after throwing an incomplete pass, he was driven to the ground midway through the third quarter and appeared to hurt his shoulder. Fifth-round rookie T.J. Yates relieved Leinart and managed the game well enough to keep the Texans in front.

Now, it looks like next week’s starter could be a competition between Yates and Kellen Clemens, who signed as the third-string quarterback last week. Since the Texans probably don’t want to play emergency-emergency quarterback Owen Daniels, better known as a tight end, Houston likely will sign another quarterback this week.

Last week, Jeff Garcia, Trent Edwards and Brody Croyle worked out for the Texans, so signing one of those three wouldn’t be a surprise.

Throw a call to Daunte Culpepper. He would play for them.

I don't see Garcia as the fix. I woud sign Mcnabb,Bulger or go after Leftwitch.

Problem -- McNabb is under contract to Minnessota and the trade deadline has passed so unless the Vikings release McNabb he is unavailable.  Leftwich is also under contract, Pittsburg and would have to be waived to be available.  Of course, the bigger problem is that Leftwich is already on IR (he was hurt in preseason) and so cannot play this season.  Bulger has made it pretty clear he does not want to play anymore.  So of the 4 choices listed -- Garcia, McNabb, Bulger and Leftwich - Garcia is the only QB potentially available.  Now I agree that, at this point in his career, Garcia is not the "fix" to anybody's QB problems, but there are very slim pickings available right now unless somebody gets released.

PupStar7 - You say they could ride Garcia throughout the playoffs, he can still evade tacklers.  What exactly are you basing this on? Garcia is now 41 years old and hasn't started a game since 2008.

I think Garcia would do a better job than Yates or Clemens, that's not even a question for me.  But I do think there are some better options out there.  Garcia never did that much passing-wise except when he was with TO.

I would say the Texans' best hopes of making the playoffs and winning in the playoffs is to try and bring in Marc Bulger.  Bulger is only 34, and I think he would give the Texans a better chance than one of these young inexperienced guys.  He isn't very mobile, but neither was Schaub.  Bulger will be able to distribute the ball and get Andre Johnson going.

This team should go after McNabb.I think he would be a very good QB on this team.

Man would I love to see Kurt Warner come back and finish the season with the Texans.

I wonder if they'd consider giving Jared Zabransky another look / tryout, again.  He was with them for a number of months in 2007, so he's at least a 'known factor' to them to a degree; and, I believe that he may actually live in the Houston area.
