Polamalu played just one series Sunday but is expected to start against the Bengals this week. (US PRESSWIRE)

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu suffered a head injury during the first series of Sunday night's game against the Chiefs when he went low to tackle Steve Maneri. He spent the rest of the night on the bench with what Pittsburgh called "concussion-like symptoms."

During head coach Mike Tomlin's Tuesday press conference, he said that he expects Polamalu to play Sunday against the Bengals in a big AFC North matchup.

"All things are positive," he said, even though Polamalu must still pass concussion tests later in the week before he'll be allowed to suit up.

Pro Football Talk's Gregg Rosenthal wrote Monday that the "concussion-like symptoms" designation was "just how the Steelers like to classify concussions." Well, not really. Diagnosing a concussion is slightly more complicated than than asking a few questions on the sidelnes before sending a player back in the game.

And whatever the Steelers are calling it, they kept Polamalu on the bench after the hit. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac tweeted Monday that "Polamalu is fine and will play vs. Bengals. He was clear and lucid by halftime but kept out because of league rules."

The Steelers head into their Week 13 matchup at 8-3. Even though they share the same record as the Ravens, they trail them in the division because Baltimore swept the season series. The Bengals, meanwhile, are 7-4. They defeated the Browns last Sunday after back-to-back losses to the Steelers and Ravens. If the season were to end today, all three teams would qualify for the playoffs.

If Polamalu can't play, he'll be replaced by Ryan Mundy, who recorded his first career interception Sunday against the Chiefs.

I agree the Steelers didnt play well Sunday night.  They obviously overlooked the Chiefs.  This stuff happens in the NFL to good teams alot.  Heck,  some 'good' teams this season have even lost to the likes of lowly Jacksonville and Seattle.  Thank God the Steelers arent THAT pathetic.

I don't agree with you and I think and hope they keep this man out of football forever it that's what is takes to keep him normal. So you can be a smart*ss all you want but Troy is a human being and the NFL sucks if they let him play Sunday.

I hate that this happened to one of the best football players ever yes I'm a diehard Steelers fan but I think Troy should not play for awhile I've aways said Troy is our Peyton Manning and I'll stick buy that. However he is a human being and I don't care that much about football to see a man have brain damage the rest of his life. Come on Steelers and the NFL do something to keep our players and heros from damaging there self's for life. I love to win and I know we won't win much without Troy but I would rather lose to keep him normal. He has a family with kids that need their DADDY. So come guys please, I love watching Troy play man I wish I was like him but I don't want him to kill himself for football.

I'm with you Knoxville.  Troy needs time to rest and assess his future in football.  Health and safety issues should come first, Coach Tomlin, ahead of the teams' needs for Sunday's game.  And I wish football would go back in time when the helmet was used to protect the head, and not used as a battering ram.  The helmet hits are what's causing today's concussions, which will affect the health of many football players long after their playing days are done.

How many is this now for Troy...Awgh thats alright, he will play Sunday. He doesn't need to really start worrying about his future for at least another 10 years, when he can't remember who he is. But he played that Sunday in 2011...Please someone needs to step in and give these people a clue.
