The Texans placed quarterback Matt Schaub on injured reserve last week. On Sunday, they lost backup Matt Leinart to a broken collarbone. Instead of going through the rest of the season with backup to the backup, T.J. Yates, Houston will signed veteran Jake Delhomme after a Tuesday workout, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports.

The Texans had already signed former Jets second-round pick Kellen Clemens after losing Schaub for the season. Delhomme becomes the latest addition to the new-look Houston quarterbacks now that they're without Leinart (who also appears headed for injured reserve).

Delhomme spent seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers and led them to the 2003 Super Bowl (they lost to the Patriots) and the 2008 NFC Divisional game (another loss, this time to the Cardinals). The Browns signed Delhomme to be their starter in 2010, but injuries and an unwieldy contract led to his release after the season.

There was some speculation that he might be in demand as a mentor, perhaps reuniting with John Fox in Denver to help groom Tim Tebow (turns out, Tebow doesn't need any help).

And earlier this season, the Dolphins were reportedly interested in signing Delhomme (he passed).

At 8-3, the Texans are the AFC's top team. And despite losing its Nos. 1 and 2 signal callers, should have little trouble making the playoffs. That said, the expectations once they get there were pretty much dashed when Leinart followed Schaub to IR.

The Texans are in their 10th year of existence and have never qualified for the postseason. They're only winning campaign came in 2009 when they went 9-7. Seventh-year head coach Gary Kubiak was in danger of losing his job after last year's disappointing 6-10 effort, but he was retained. And right up until they lost Schaub, Houston was considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Report: Texans to sign QB Jake Delhomme

that was a decent move by the texans. I do think Jeff Garcia would have been a better fit because he is so much more mobile and would be a better fit. Delhomme is somewhat washed up but he all he has to do is be a game manager and make a play here and there and he can throw the deep ball pretty decent and throw it a little bit better than Garcia. My Texans should be fine still with the way we are playing Defense. Just manager the ball Delhomme and don't turn the ball over. No turn over's please!!!!!!!!!

Report: Texans to sign QB Jake Delhomme

To C-Bone:
For not taking Jeff Garcia, it could be that they wanted someone who could throw deep and Garcia is not the best option for that... Maybe they wanted to chuck it to Andre Johnson a couple of times a game and were worried Garcia did not have what they needed...  I personally thing Garcia is worth the shot, especially compared to Delhomme and Clemmens...  I can tell you from being in Chiefs country, Brodie Croyle is not the answer either...  Houston should not even waste their time with that guy, unless they want to set a new NFL record for QBs getting hurt and going on IR in one season...

Signing Jake Delhomme is a sure sign of despiration...  Jeff Garcia would have been 10 times better than Delhomme...  At least Garcia knows how to win...  He looked really good a number of times in Philly, Tampa Bay and even later in Oakland...  What does this possibility tell us???  Not sure about TJ Yates --- Understandable, but at least he knows your offense...  Kellen Clemmens --- Not sure what you have and maybe don't trust him after getting a better look at him for the past 2 weeks in practice... Worried they should have signed someone else, but were in a hurry since a number of teams were after Kyle Orton...  Kellen Clemmens was a waste of time... Jake is not the answer... He will not come in like Steve Buerline did at 38 and look like a stud... Jake is done... Houston needs to keep looking...  Jeff Garcia would be a great pick up for a serviceable QB to throw and hand off, the defense will do the rest...

Well he kind of sucked at Carolina.... but he had some injuries and he should be well rested.  I have Andre on my fantasy team so I'm hoping he can throw the durn ball to him.   Kind of hope that he fills in okay.. the one year Houston catches a break and Indy doesn't have Peyton and they lose a all pro QB.

Agree Garcia seeme like a good option.  He worked out though last week when they signed Clemmons.  I guess brass didn't think he looked good.

I'm a Panther fan and I can tell you that Jake COULD BE the answer in Houston. It will largely depend on the QBs coach. Under his father-in-law, John Fox, his deteriorating mechanics were not corrected and as his game fell apart, so did the Panthers which led to Delhomme and Fox both being sent packing. IF Houston can get the OLD Jake back, they could actually find themselves in the driver's seat for the AFC Championship and then...likely...get chewed up by the Packers.
