Peyton Manning slowly getting healthier

ManningPosted by Josh Katzowitz

About a month ago, Peyton Manning said he’d have a better indication of where he -- and his career -- stood once he went through his Dec. 1 checkup. And though his progress from neck surgery has been awfully slow, he finally received some good news today.

The Colts released a statement from Dr. Robert Watkins in which he said the X-ray and CT examination of Manning’s surgical area shows “that the fusion performed in September has achieved firm fixation.”

“Peyton will now be allowed to increase the intensity and breadth of his workouts as tolerated,” Watkins said. “There remains every indication that his recovery will continue.”

Watkins said there’s no timetable for Manning’s return to practice.

“I am encouraged with what Doc had to say,” Manning said in the statement. “I am happy that I can increase my rehabilitation program as outlined by him, Erin (Barill) and the Colts Medical Staff. I am hopeful for continued progress in this next phase of my rehab.”

While Manning has said in the past that he wants to practice and play if possible (!) this year, the latter almost surely won’t happen. Still, he has to be encouraged by this latest news. As is his team, though as we should point out, there still is no indication that Manning will ever be healthy enough to play again.

I agree with your post that Manning is one of the best ever, but no one can say who the best ever is,different eras and different players,no doubt he was one of the best of his time, don't forget former greats and winners like,Bart Starr,Brett Favre,Fran Tarkenton,Joe thiesman,Sonny Jurgenson,Otto Graham,Y A Title,Terry Bradshaw,Jim Plunkett,Ken Stabler,Jack Kemp,Roger Stabach,John Elway,Bob Griese,Johnny Unitas,Phil Simms,Lenny Dawson,Norm Van Brocklin,Ken Anderson,Joe Namath,.....there are so many more i could sit here and type for the rest of the night. It's foolish in my opinion for anyone to say a player was or is the greatest of all time.

YES! I hope Manning is all healthy and ready to go next year.
Then will see that even the GREAT Manning can't help this sorry team.
After Manning fails next year maybe they'll fire the special teams coach or some coach to take the fall.

Meanwhile, the Roughing the Kicker Penalty has been removed and players are now required to body slam and then elbow drop a Punter anytime they come within 10 yards of him on the field. This should make up for the decreased physicality of the game caused by the Manning regulations.

New NFL rules being put in place next year:
Touching Manning = 15 Yard Penalty
Touching Mannings receivers = ball placed at the spot of the foul, automatic first down
Defending or Intercepting one of Mannings passes = 15 Yard Penalty

This is being done to maintain the entertainment value of the NFL and to protect its star... err.. stars, I mean.

A Colts fan I am not (See Avatar) But Steelers Rule: That has to be the assinine statement of the year.

"Big" Ben has has issues with the law and at times has been just plain stupid.

The Steelers are much more  a complete team where the Colts are totally in-ept w/o Peyton. O-fer

Agreed. Neck injury = not good for football player. I'm a Chiefs fan and something very similar ended Priest Holmes' career. Also similar, Holmes and Trent Green might have actually won a playoff game with a decent defense. Remember the Chiefs/Colts playoff game at Arrowhead (03? 04?) where the Colts NEVER punted.   YEESH.

Put Big Ben on the Colts and he would have gave the Colts three more rings
