Donovan McNabb clears waivers, becomes free agent

Despite a glaring need at quarterback on a number of playoff contenders, no one claimed recently-released quarterback Donovan McNabb on Friday.

McNabb, who reportedly asked for his release after being demoted, was supposed to draw interest from someone, like the Bears (currently starting Caleb Hanie) or the Texans (currently starting T.J. Yates), but instead passed through waivers, which makes him an unrestricted free agent.

Quite obviously, the limited upside that McNabb offers just wasn't worth the downside of picking up the rest of the quarterback's contract with a waiver claim and/or dealing with bringing McNabb into a backup situation that he probably wouldn't be happy with anyway.

McNabb could still sign with someone as a free agent, but Chicago seems like the only truly viable option for him, what with Houston inking Jake Delhomme recently.

Which means that this may be the end of the road, at least for now, for McNabb, who's impromptu live appearance on ESPN Thursday night may be the best predictor of what he'll be doing in 2012. He's now been demoted by three different teams and benched for Kevin Kolb, Rex Grossman and Christian Ponder in the span of two years.

The same team that just cut him, Minnesota, claimed Sage Rosenfels to take McNabb's place. Houston seems willing to roll with Jake Delhomme as Yates backup rather than taking a flier on McNabb. In other words, you don't need shades to stare at McNabb's future on the football field.

But hey, on the bright side, it's not like the Redskins, Eagles and Vikings -- 10 wins between them this year! -- are having a bunch of success this year.

But Teblow has gotten a chance, despite the lack of QB skills. Why? Because he is white and bows at the altar of James Dobson. You put a black man of progressive values, with an identical skill set, in that same situation and no way does an NFL team take a chance on him. If they do, he ends up on special teams or if lucky, gets a shot at being the 3rd down back.

I brought up specific and tough to deny points.

This is just idiotic and doesn't even make any sense.

I think Tebow has terrible qb skills, and will eventually Fail However, the fact that he is white makes no difference. He college resume speaks for itself. He has also won regularly in the NFL week after week with his awkward style. Heck, I am not rooting for him myself, but he has earned the shot he has gotten. If a black qb had done what he had done in college he would get the same chance. It's not about race at all, so don't make it about race. My 2 cents

Ridiculous post. Didn't Vick just get paid an enormous amount of money? It is about winning games, and regardless of Tebow's results, it is also about being capable of throwing all of the passes, which is why Tebow is so criticized regardless of his skin color. Tebow willl never get a contract like Vick, never! So much for being white. McNabb stinks and Tebow will join him on the scrap heap in about another year.

Well the problem is that the Broncos know Tebow can't throw!! So they let him do what they should be doing with the Vicks, Youngs, and other black QB's that can run the ball but if they take off running on a pass they get talked about that they can't play the QB position!? Pretty sad that the white people think its ok to have a a white scrambled but a black guy that does it better is supposed to throw the ball and not scramble!? I'm a white guy and there are tons of good black QB's wasting away as backups or 3rd stringers that could run circles around Tebow!! McNabb was a great quarterback!! A true gamechanger!! He played on some terrible Philly teams and willed hem to win alot of games!! Then he gets all this young talent and is showed the highway!? Kinda sad!! But it is what it is!! Good luck to Donovan I enjoyed you at Syracuse and in the NFL!

Who gives a crap what color the guy is. Oh, I guess some of you do.

Well, let me tell you this: your Tim Teblow is the worst QB I've ever seen behind center if measured by traditional means. But Teblow has gotten a chance, despite the lack of QB skills. Why? Because he is white and bows at the altar of James Dobson. You put a black man of progressive values, with an identical skill set, in that same situation and no way does an NFL team take a chance on him. My only correction is there has been a great black quarterback. He played great for a bunch of years on a horrible team in Tampa. He got to start for a good team in Washington and ended up winning a Super Bowl. His name was Doug Williams, and he was a great QB. If we consider Archie Manning a great QB on bad New Orleans teams, we have to include Williams in the same category...but with a SB ring.
