Matt Forte to miss 2-4 weeks with sprained MCL?

Matt Forte's injury on Sunday -- the running back left in the first quarter after Derrick Johnson tackled him -- might have backed the Bears season into a corner and taken away its claws. This is particularly true if Forte, as reports indicate, will miss between two and four weeks.

"I feel bad for Matt, especially with everything he's going through,'' wideout/returner Devin Hester said. "This is like a big slap in the face.''

Week 13 Recap

Hester, by the way, also said signing Donovan McNabb would be "a waste of time." Multiple reports out of Chicago indicate that Forte's injury is a Grade 2 MCL sprain and that it will require him to miss up to four weeks of playing time.

Interestingly, as Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune notes, Forte's played through a serious knee injury once already in his career. In 2009, Forte sprained his MCL in Week 3 of the season but never missed a game, eventually getting surgery in the following offseason.

There's one huge difference between 2009 and right now, though: Forte's contract.

The running back has wanted a new deal for several months now, and the Bears have simply refused to "pay the man." Whether or not Forte's willing to play through the injury this time around will be interesting; at least one of his teammates believes if he can, he will.

"He's a competitor," wideout Roy Williams said Sunday after the game, per The Trib. "That's what we are: We're competitors. A lot of people don't play this game for money. I don't. I could quit right now and be fine [financially]. I play because I love the game and I want to compete. That's the same with Forte. If he can play, he's going to play, no matter the money situation."

No one doubts that Forte wants to play. And even if Forte misses four weeks, it doesn't mean he's purposely laying low to guarantee himself a payday. In fact, far from it.

But it'd be hard to blame Forte if he was cautious with his returning timeline, given the way the Bears have handled his contract situation. Of course, Sunday was a perfect example of not only why Forte wants to get paid, but why the Bears haven't paid him.

Matt Forte to miss 2-4 weeks with sprained MCL?

There goes my chances of winning in my fantasy football playoffs.  Forte you owe me $1000!  Hope you heal quickly and get the contract you deserve.  You are a stud RB and I'd take you over just about anybody else in the league.

They should be able to beat Seattle and Minnesota even without Cutler and Forte, and could beat Denver if they can stop Tebow Time from biting them in the a$$. 9-7 may or may not be good enough for a wild card, but 10-6 more than likely would be.

They should have been able to beat KC too... but they couldn't score more then 3 points.  If the Bears abandon the Martz offense and simplify things for Hanie, maybe they can win a couple more games with the kid at qb.  But as it stands right now with Martz's offense, not a chance in hell.  Seattle and KC are better defensive teams with much more talent on that side of the ball then KC has after all the injuries they suffered through.

Yo redwing  Forte was offered a contract in preseason and turned it down........we dont need anybody from f n detroit talking bout our team.  get your facts straight before you act like suh.

Yo degenerate loser.  I'm an NFL fan and I'll comment on anything I want to comment on.  And by the way, I was very respectful in my post and I've forgotten more about the NFL then a loud mouth punk like you will ever know.   I like Forte, he's one of my favourite players in the NFL even though he plays for a rival division team.

By the way, the 14 million guaranteed they offered Forte is a complete joke compared to what great running backs that do all the things Forte does get paid.  Chris Johnson got a 56 million dollar deal with 30 million guaranteed and Forte is every bit the player he is and in my opinion a much better overall player with a better attitude.  Not to mention C.J held out on his team while Forte busted his ass from the beginning in training camp and didn't hold out for 5 minutes.  You think a multi year deal with 14 million dollars guaranteed is respectful when a punk attitude like C.J is getting double that?????????   A.P on Minnesota got a 96 million dollar deal with 36 million guaranteed.  I don't think Forte should take a back seat to either of those guys, let alone for less then half of what they make.

If they don't franchise him or if Forte forces the Bears to trade him if they do, I guarantee you there would be at least 5 or 6 other teams in a bidding war for that guy that would gladly sign him to a deal for double what the Bears offered.   That offer was an insult... a complete joke for a guy that means as much to a team as Forte does to Chicago.

The Bears did offer him a contract with something like $14 million guaranteed but Forte turned it down because he wanted more money.

Matt Forte to miss 2-4 weeks with sprained MCL?

I hate this conspiracy theory BS about players not trying to play with injuries because of contracts. A Grade 1 sprain is a "stretch" of a ligament, a Grade 2 sprain (the kind that Forte has) is a partial rupture ("tear") of the ligament, and Grade 3 is a full rupture (like what Kenny Britt of the Titans suffered). Contrary to popular belief, a *fully* ruptured ligament is MUCH worse than a broken bone, because the vascular supply to bones is much better than that to ligaments and joints; therefore, bones heal much faster than ligaments do.

Medical jargon aside, it is really sad that the Bears have lost two very important players in three weeks. They should be able to beat Seattle and Minnesota even without Cutler and Forte, and could beat Denver if they can stop Tebow Time from biting them in the a$$. 9-7 may or may not be good enough for a wild card, but 10-6 more than likely would be. If the Bears could make the playoffs and get Cutler and Forte back, they could have the tools to get at least back to the NFC championship with a solid team that is used to playing in cold, difficult conditions.
