Lew Bush was a linebacker on the 1994 San Diego Chargers, the only team in franchise history to play in the Super Bowl. On Thursday, six days after his 42nd birthday, he died of an apparent heart attack, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Bush is the seventh member of that team to die before the age of 45, and the second this year after defensive lineman Shawn Lee passed away in February of cardiac arrest after a long bout with diabetes. He was 44.

The others to die prematurely include David Griggs, who was killed in a car accident in June 1995 (he was 28); running back Rodney Culver died when his plane crashed in the Florida Everglades (he was 26); Doug Miller died when he was twice struck by lightning in 1998 (he was 28); Curtis Whitley died of a drug overdose in 2008 (he was 39), and Chris Mims died of an enlarged heart that same year (he was 38).

Bush was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 draft out of Washington State. (He was in the same draft class as Doug Miller, who was a seventh-rounder.) He played seven season for the Chargers and had 201 tackles, three sacks and an interception. He spent the final three years of his career with the Chiefs before retiring after the 2002 season.

Lew Bush was my big brother who will truly be missed. After reading some of the comments I'm actually amazed at how some of you have know tact or class. In the future please be mindful that friends and family are viewing. As well please be sensitive to the feelings of these close frinds and family members. Thank you in advance.

Def very sad news when one dies so young.   Have to wonder sometimes how much a negative impact their careers have contributed......not just the hits, but the meds.

Wow. I am so so glad that Gary Plummer confirmed the Lew will be missed greatly.  I wasn't aware that he had such power and say-so in situations like this.  The next time someone dies and we want to know if he or she will be missed, I guess we know who to ask.  Geeezzzz.  Or were you just trying to impress people that you know him personally and "texted" him.  Give. Me. A. Break!!!

Do not remember him but did not follow San Diego.  I was pulling for them to win the Super Bowl in 1994 vs the 49ers.  There does not seem to be a common thread between all the early deaths, except being a member of that team, that year, car accidents, drug overdoses, plane crashes, lighting, issues with diabetes.  I guess the enlarged heart and heart attack stuff were the closest.  I am not counting Lee's as it was tied to the diabetes.  Very. very strange you have to admit.

Thoughts are with his family and friends.

R.I.P. Brother, your time spent here as a Charger was appreciated and respected. As a San Diegan, I would like to express our deepest sympathies from loyal Charger Fans and friends. Everyone always spoke highly of you, so that says allright with me. I never met you in person but walked right beside you as a 165 lb. "teammate".
I just texted Gary Plummer and he confirmed that Lew will be missed greatly.
God Bless Lew and his Family.

Not a spectacular, but a solid LB for the Chargers. My condolences go out to his family. Rest in peace, Lew.
