Tony Sparano fired by Dolphins Monday

Black Monday isn't usually for a couple of weeks, but it came early for a pair of NFL coaches -- on the heels of Todd Haley getting dumped by the Chiefs, the Dolphins have fired Tony Sparano on Monday, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms.

We noted Monday morning that there were reports Sparano would be let go at the end of the season. It appears that timeline was ramped up, and it's entirely possible that owner Stephen Ross didn't want to fall too far behind other teams in searching for a new head coach.

Sparano, speaking to the media on Monday morning, would not address his job security.

Week 14 Recap

"No, I want to coach against the Buffalo Bills this week," Sparano said. "I'm going to get ready to coach the Buffalo Bills. That’s my sole focus. Can’t wait to get my team back here and Wednesday and get ready to go."

According to Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network, secondary coach (and Assistant Head Coach) Todd Bowles will take over as interim head coach for the next three weeks in Miami.

And there's an additional twist to the Miami situation emerging, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that former Chiefs president Carl Peterson will take over the role of "czar" in the front office, which has been vacant since Bill Parcells departure from Miami. (Peterson has been/is business partners with Ross and is believed to be a link to hiring Bill Cowher in Miami.)

But Peterson tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that ESPN's report of him joining the Dolphins is "inaccurate."

As all of you know, before Cowher (Cohwer?) became the head football coach of the Steelers he was an assistant under Marty Schottenheimer when Marty was the head football coach of both the Browns and the Chiefs.  Carl Peterson hired Marty Schottenheimer to coach the Chiefs.  By association, Cowher (Cohwer?) and Carl do have a history.

On the other hand, I do hope the Dolphins stay away from former college coaches to lead this franchise.  We saw what happened with Cam Cameron (Indiana), "Little Nicky" Saban (too many to list) and Jimmy Johnson (Oklahoma St and Miami).

The Miami franchise could bring back coaching great Tony D'Amato, who was incharge when they last played in the Pantheon Cup championship.

Bill Cohwer wants to come into a situation where he already has a quarterback. --
Maybe not.. he drafted Ben, and for better or worse, ODonnell, notched a SB loss, but he got there.

this is a terrible move. when he changes the def and has them looking like a top 5 def and actually scoring points they fire him when he loses 1 game.
Loses 1 game???  He lost the first SEVEN in a row and couldn't win at home for three years.  And to say he had them looking good is questionable.  They beat ONE team with a winning record (the 7-6 Raiders) in that little run they made this year.  They have also lost to three teams with losing records.  The defense has been OK for the most part, but you have to play offense too.

So the goal is to bring in Carl Peterson to lures Bill Cohwer? Does anyone think this will work? First, we see how well the Chiefs are doing. Second, Bill Cohwer wants to come into a situation where he already has a quarterback. Moore? I just don't see this. I would love to see Cohwer down in Miami, but I just can't see it being the type of job that would lure him back into coaching. Thoughts?

No sir.  They did not fire him when he loses 1 game.  They fired him when he lost 9 games.  3 years in a row! But I agree, Ireland needs to go.
