Tony Sparano fired by Dolphins Monday

Black Monday isn't usually for a couple of weeks, but it came early for a pair of NFL coaches -- on the heels of Todd Haley getting dumped by the Chiefs, the Dolphins have fired Tony Sparano on Monday, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms.

We noted Monday morning that there were reports Sparano would be let go at the end of the season. It appears that timeline was ramped up, and it's entirely possible that owner Stephen Ross didn't want to fall too far behind other teams in searching for a new head coach.

Sparano, speaking to the media on Monday morning, would not address his job security.

Week 14 Recap

"No, I want to coach against the Buffalo Bills this week," Sparano said. "I'm going to get ready to coach the Buffalo Bills. That’s my sole focus. Can’t wait to get my team back here and Wednesday and get ready to go."

According to Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network, secondary coach (and Assistant Head Coach) Todd Bowles will take over as interim head coach for the next three weeks in Miami.

And there's an additional twist to the Miami situation emerging, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that former Chiefs president Carl Peterson will take over the role of "czar" in the front office, which has been vacant since Bill Parcells departure from Miami. (Peterson has been/is business partners with Ross and is believed to be a link to hiring Bill Cowher in Miami.)

But Peterson tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that ESPN's report of him joining the Dolphins is "inaccurate."

I am not sure this was a great idea. Say what you want, but he had the Dolphins playing hard for him. The QB situation was stable, not great, turnovers limited, and the defense played well. It amazes me how much it is the coach's fault because a GM makes crappy deals. Someone said his best season was when Chad Pennington was the QB, I like Chad but he was hardly an elite QB.

Don't worry Dolphins fans - the owner said they're going to find the next "young Don Shula", so problem solved.  Hurry up and hire him before someone else finds him!  It reminds me of an old Simpsons episode where Mr Burns tells D Strawberry to hit a home run at the company softball game.  (Smithers: "Excellent strategy sir!").  Actually, Mr Burns and Smithers are great nicknames for Ross and Ireland.

Ross wants a star coach and an elite QB (who doesn't) but he's retaining Ireland who has never accomplished finding either one.

Sparano fired, why is Ireland Still Here?

Sparano was hoplessly inept as a head coach. The only reason he had a winning season in 2008 was because of Chad Pennington. However, he is not alone in sharing the blame for the dismal 3, consecutive losing seasons. Jeff Ireland has a lot to do with it to. He brought in a lot of overpaid, underperforming players through free-agency and trades. He is also 1/3 responsible for bringing in QB bust, Chad Henne. So why is Ireland still here?

this is a terrible move. when he changes the def and has them looking like a top 5 def and actually scoring points they fire him when he loses 1 game. ireland and ross both need to be gone. if ireland would get him some players in there that are coachable we wouldnt be having the talk. moore has looked good this year but he isnt the answer and henne damn sure isnt the answer.  its unbelieveable that they fire him and ireland is still there. what has he done. NOTHING. good luck to tony

I don't like this move. I'd say this guy has done the best with what he had. Miami has been in almost every game this year and I think they even won some games they shouldn't have. It's a real shame too because I'm sure this means Reggie Bush will be moved down the depth chart or maybe even waived when some Old School ground and pound coach is brought in that knows nothing about modern football. What is going on with florida football teams? Don't these owners realize that when you fire the coach the team usually gets worse?!?! Henne is no star QB and was hurt this year! You need to draft a first round QB!

At this time fired Sparano was a bad moved, I Though at the star of the season they should be doing that. Not now.
